Hereas our 1AXdfI1if1iStf2lti0f1 Mr. Charles B. Barrett Principal Roosevelt High School is formally twenty-five years old. The first class graduated from the twelfth grade in 1932. The school began in l930 and was housed in what was then known as the Old Normal School. We remember these build- ings more recently as the old Stevenson Inter- mediate School on Lunalilo Street. Until September, 1939, grades 7 through 12 were accommodated here. Since 1939 we have had the more conventional three year high school. Roosevelt High School has always been known for its strong academic program. Large num- bers of graduates attend institutions of higher learning. At present, well over half of the grad- uates continue their formal education. This is far above the national average. lt is very important that we provide varied educational opportunities for our youth-those which meet their needs and the needs of the community. With this as our goal, we can be confident that Roosevelt High School will con- tinue to hold an important position in the edu- cational world of Hawaii. MZVHEM The Principal and the Teachers What makes Roosevelt tick? Who keeps order in our high-spirited, fast-growing school? The answer is, our teachers. The faculty gathers to- gether weekly to discuss the'current needs and problems of the many students-the programming and need for constant improvement weigh heavily upon their minds long after the 3 o'clock bell has rung. This forward- looking group is constantly busy devising new teach- ing methods, preparing lessops, correcting tests, and prodding wayward students. Besides their regular classwork, they have chaperoned our dances, counseled us, and sponsored our scholastic clubs. Vile have come to know them well as warm, cheer- ful friends, and as firm, astute teachers. The class counselors always provided up-to-date material on the nation's colleges and scholarships. They often had to call in students, via the pink pass, for neces- sary conferences. Their failure reminders succeeded in waking up some students. Xvherever we go, whatever we do, we are confident that we will be assets to the school and community be- cause our teachers have instilled in our minds the prin. ciples of good citizenship and right living. These meetings, along with those of the Representative Assembly, served as the thrashing ground for the problems of the students. This group, carefully selected by the students last spring, listened with patience to our countless gripes of the crowded stairways, the bus shortage, and the cutting in on lunch lines. Discussions led to plans, plans to action. Decisions favorable to students resulted. They served the student body untiringly from September to june. During the football season, they sold colorful red and gold beanies to bright- en up our cheering section. They organized the production of identihcation cards. They raised money for the scholarship fund by giving two student body dances-the Mistletoe Ball and the April Showers. The highlight of their term was the trip to Maui in November to attend the Territorial High School Government Association Confer- ence. Typical of Roosevelt students, our officers returned, bubbling over with enthusiasm and ideas to Finish the remainder of the year. Merton Chun served as treasurer during the second semester to replace Harris Kitamura, who resigned because of illness. .,...-....- Q-ax. L5 A PRISCILLA MQRALES KATE YANAGA KARLEN PETERSON MRS. The Class of 956 For a quarter of a century Roosevelt High School has been turning out young, alert, enthusiastic citizens. Now it is our turn to leave these beloved halls of learn. ing to take our place in the community. As we look back on the past three years, we remember all our classes and exams, canteens, movies, and assemblies -now only pleasant memories of things that have become an integral part of us. Our sophomore year-so very long ago-how could we have been so green and innocent? But we had our fill of new and exciting experiences like the Howdy Doody Hop, the Sophomore Mixer, and canteens. The junior year-we climbed a bit higher on the lad- der of learning. We studied diligently our new subjects of American literature U. S. history and many new languages math and science We also got a bit cockler Additional privileges were taken in our stride the unior Senior Prom a truly Iznchanted Evening relaxing picnic at Kalimi Beach and the distribution of our cliss rings how we have reached the top the senior year the best of all Me studied hard to grasp the knowledge offered us in English literature chemistry and phystcs XVe also progressed socially our banquet at the South Seas the Senior Lanteen the picnic in the spring and the Lommencement Ball Then finally the climax the Iune graduation exercises here ln our own stadium Undoubtedly we will be remembered as the class that won the 1955 Football Lhampionship Not only on the gridiron were we successful this year but also scholas tically as shown by the substantial number of seniors on the honor roll Many for the first time buckled down to their studies trying to make their senior year the last Others struggled under a heavy schedule often staying up till the wee hours proving a geometry problem or writing up a chemistry experiment And so we come to the end of a full year our silver anniversary year WN ho can express this queer mixed up feeling within us? We are eager to push forward yet we linger behind Thus with one last look back we turn to face the future prepared for greater challenges and higher achievements Left to ugh! This year its members helped with classroom projects and showcase exhibits while learning about Roman customs, history, art, and the Latin language. The twenty-third annual Roman banquet, held on the ldes ol March, climaxed Slave Week when the humble slaves bowed to the demands of their exalted masters. Dressed in togas, the Romans wined and dined much as Caesar might have done. The most faithful servi were given the privilege ol serving and entertaining the masters. Front Row, Left la Right: j. N Roosevs Spirit in SPQIIS Varsity Football Rough Riders ..... Charge! And so they did. They charged right on to the 1955 Interscholastic League Cham- pionship. Thanks to the expert mentoring of head coach Edmund Ticky Vasconcellos, line coach Kai Bong Chung, and end coach Johnny Yvright, the Rough Riders rode through the season undefeated. By far, our greatest victory of the season was the annual tussle with Punahou for the coveted Paintbrush Trophy. The boys, with the Red and Gold spirit, trounced the Buff and Blue's by a score of 20-6. This victory was the first stepping stone to the champion- ship. Brilliant halfback George Purdy, co-backs Nolan George and Frank Kaleimamahu, and quarterback Mark Holbrook operated the running force of the Riders, who were paced by linemen such as all-stars George Naukana, Cashman' Bertelmann, Moses Pung, and William Young. Good blocking by other outstanding linemen Anthony Mau- nakea, Thomas Onishi, and jay Buckert showed our compact offensive power. Starting off the season's play with victories over Farrington and Kaimuki, the boys had little time to catch their breath before they played Punahou, Iolani, and St. Louis in successive weekend tilts. Ending the season triumphantly with the defeat of the Tigers and the Warriors, the tired Riders suffered their only defeat in the exhibition game against Punahou on Thanksgiving Day. Completing another successlul season, our cindermen emerged vic- torious, once more winning the Public School Meet, Cornell Relays, and lnterscholastic Track Meet championship. January found the spikesters priming tor the tough season ahead. The tests and measurements program, introduced by Coach Vasconcellos a few years ago, again uncovered latent talent to supplement an already fine team. The bulk of the team was composed of returnees George Naukana, Louis Faria, Karl Van Etten, George Furukawa, Dave Fullaway, Les Meyer, Frank Kaleimamahu, and Mike Kelly. They were assisted by newcomers Milton Kam, Danny Cuban, and Raymond Chu. Much credit goes to Coaches Edmond Vasconcellos, Lilo Allen, and Bob Gardner, whose efforts produced experts in track and held events, and promoted good sportsmanship. Coached by Lester Higa, the team won games whifh were sought by Roosevelt baseball fans ever since l954. The lack of a good baseball diamond to practice on proved to be an obstacle in the performance of the team. Taking this handi- cap into consideration, the boys worked even harder to uphold the Red and Gold spirit. Top Row, Left to Right: COACH LESTER HIGA, B. Broughton, H. Kashima, M. Pung, G. Purdy. Battalion . Forwa rd, rn a rch ! Every Tuesday cadets ol' the Reserve Officers Training Corps drilled to the pulsating rhythm of the drums. They were richly rewarded for their hard work when they received the sixth consecutive honor school banner. Roosevelt now is the only school in the territory to hold this remarkable record. Under the guidance ol Capt. Richard VI. Car- roll, who came to us this year, the boys' en- thusiasm lound constructive channels. Operating under a new system, the cadets had more drill in marching and manual-of-arms. Two com- panies were added to our fast-growing battalion, In classes taught by MjSgts. XVilbert Holck- Glenn Parrott, and Alfred XValter, the boys learned the fundamentals of map reading, weapon handling, military organization, and first aid, all of which will benefit them in their everyday living as well as in the Armed Services.
