Senior Favored by many to wind up the season among the top four teams of the lnterscholastic League the injury-laden Roosevelt football team ended in the cellar. However, the Rough Riders under the coaching of Coach Donahue gave many a team a scare before succumbing to defeat. Herbert Nam, Rooseve-lt's best offensive as well as defensive man received recognition by being chosen for the All-Star Team, Roosevelt's only contribution. Chief ground gainers for the Rough Riders were Herbert Ching, Iames Miya- sato and Herbert Nam While Iohn Park, Henry McKeague and Harvey Lung gained valuable yardage through the aerial lanes. Outstanding linemen were William Bonner and William Hooser with Phillip King, Lionel Brash and Iames Lacy giving able assistance. The varsity next year will be built around Herbert Ching, Frank Paz, Iames Miyasato, 82 Henry McKeague and Harvey Lung in the back- fieldp and on the line Vernon Windrath, Kenneth Dias, William Maguire, and Iames Mendoza who showed good promise this year. Credit must be given to the two hard-Working team managers, Iames Perry and Thomas Kop. The Roosevelt-Kam game opened the Inter- scholastic season. The heavy and experienced Kam team poured their way to a 20-O victory but despite the score had to fight for every yard. Standouts for Roosevelt were Herbert Mura- kami, Phillip King and William Hooser on the line and Hazelden Kaeck and Herbert Nam in the backfield. St. Louis, executing their plays to precision, knifed through the Makiki squad for a l8-O ver- dict. Swivel-hipped Wilfred Soares starred for St. Louis while for Roosevelt, Bonner and King did yeoman work on the line. ln the backfield Ching and Nam ran for long gains. Senior Basketball A powerful Roosevelt High School basketball team capped second place in the interscholastic Basketball League after bowing to Farrington, 42-40, in the championship game. With five returning lettermen pacing the team, the Roosevelt five swept through the regular series and round-robin in fine fashion. Lionel Brash, the tallest man in the league, was a unanimous choice for all-star honors at center, while Bill Bonner and diminutive Gaylen Kawashima garnered the all-star guard and utility position, respectively. Brash's con- trol of the backboard, Bonner's spectacular shooting and Kawashimas dazzling speed and ball handling plus the fine defensive playing of guards Herbert Nam and lohn Park, all knitted together to make Roosevelt a smooth and deadly working machine. lt was through quick-thinking and fine ball handling that Roosevelt placed as runners-up to the crown. Able support was given them by strong reserves which included juniors, Herbert Ching, Henry Mclieague, Alex McLain, Leo Porter, and seniors, Herbert Murakami, Bill Caldwell, Gordon Fraser, Bill Howerton, Charles Lee and loe Kiehm. In preliminary games, the Roosevelt quintet defeated the visiting Raiders from Kauai High, 29-18, and the rural Oahu team, Waialua, 36-21. On the trip to Maui, they scored three victories, St. Anthony, 33-307 Maui High, 38-30, and Baldwin 39-29, but bowed to the more powerful Lahainaluna team, 37-30. Now having more experience, the Rough Riders opened their regular season by defeating St. Louis, 33-31. The game was nip-and-tuck all the way. High Point man for Roosevelt was Brash with nine points followed by Kawashima and Park with seven each. Ken Gaspar stood out for the Saints. Farrington was next, but the Red and Gold succumbed to a 38-34 defeat. The game was a close one, but the Gov- ernors pulied away in the dying moments to emerge the victors. Brash meshed thirteen points while Rodrigues of Farrington garnered nineteen. The :text :our games the team '.-lhizzed through, proving more powerful than ever. They defeated Kaimuki, 33-29, followed hy Iolani, which Roosevelt held tc a scoreless guar- ter and limited them to a five point half. The final score was 35-17. Mid-Pacific was next to feel the blow of the Rough Riders, 44-347 and Punahou fell 41-26. The points were divided among several players as all three teams were used. The lNarricrs matched basket for basket with the Maki- kians in the Roosevelt-Kamehameha game until the final minutes when they finally fell to a 39-36 victory in Roose- velt's favor. lohn Park scored fourteen digits while Brash walked cff with nine. Dempster and Moore were outstanding for Kam. McKinley handed Roosevelt its second loss of the season, 36-33. The Micks held the lead all the way. During the last quarter the Rough Riders staged a brilliant comeback but it was too late. Brash and Bonner scored thirteen and fourteen points, respectively. This game ended the regular series and placed Roosevelt in a two way tie for second place with McKinley, while Farrington stood on top. To avenge the defeat just handed to them, the classy quintet of Roosevelt started the round-robin series by de- feating Mcliinley, 31-29, in true style. Scrapping every minute of play the Rough Riders forged ahead in the last half to gain a well earned victory. McKinley was checked by the tight Roosevelt man-to-man defense. Brash meshed ten points while Edralin of McKinley scored thirteen. Herbert Nam played a strong defensive game at his guard post. Once again St. Louis fell to the hands of the Rough Riders, 39-31. ln the half, Roosevelt led, 18-17, but during the final half launched a strong back drive to defeat the Saints. Once again Brash led the individual scorers. Herbert Nam and Gaylen Kawashima played well also. With the victory over McKinley and St. Louis, Roosevelt was now in tie for the championship title with Farrington. Once again Roosevelt muffed its chance when Farrington emerged victorious on a 42-40 score. Both teams played cautiously with Roosevelt in the lead at the half, 27-21. Far- rington checked Roosevelt basket for basket when finally in the last moments of the game the Governors forged ahead, 42-40, freezing the ball. The game ended with the Riders trying desperately to garner or at least tie the game. Too much credit cannot be given to Coach Arthur Kim, who taught the boys the important points of the game, and to Capt. Rene DuMontier, who took over the team in Kim's abscnoe and carried it throdgh to victory. BASKETBALL SCORES RHS . .... . Kauai RHS . . Waialua HHS , St. Anthony RHS . ...... Track Team With a go-getting coach, Reginald Godwin, and his assistant, Bob Gardner, Roosevelt's track team of '47 really went places. The team did things right this year, with a good coach, good equipment, and an improved field. The inter-class meet was taken by the seniors, fol- lowed by the sophomores and juniors. Next the team met with Kam, lolani, Kaimulci and Mid- Pacific in a five way affair, with Kam copping the meet and Roosevelt coming in third. Al- though they came in a close third in the senior and novice and fourth in the open division of the C.Y.O. track meet, Roosevelt can boast of the superb job its men did. Matching wits with more heavily favored and experienced teams, the Rough Riders went through the season defeated in score but not in spirit and determination. Coach Wolfe unceasingly put the boys through their daily practice stressing the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship. Next year the team will be built around the sophomores and juniors rated high as sharp- shooters this year. BUYS' TENNIS Mr. Vfilliam Waters advised the boys' tennis team this year which met with moderate suc- cess. Cut of ten matches the team won tive and placed third in the league. IUNIOR FGGTBALL Ably led by Coach Robert Kingsley, Roose- velt's junior football squad of fifty-odd hopefuls turned in a fairly good account of themselves. They succumbed to superior forces during the season, largely because they were outweighed and inexperienced. The spirit of the boys was excellent, however, and each boy improved as the season progressed. JUNIOR BASKETBALL The Roosevelt junior basketball team finished the leagues standing with four wins and five losses. Led by Frank Steinmiller, Warren Yuen and Owen Tsukiyama, the boys went on to take Mid-Pacific, Punahou, Kaimulci and lolani. Next year many ot these boys will be expected to make a better showing with more experience behind them. IUNIOB BASEBALL The junior baseball team was coached by Bobert Rego and assisted by Wallace Blaisdell. The team went through their daily paces, trying hard and gaining valuable training. Although they tailed to garner a single victory throughout the season, what they lacked in scores they made up in spirit and determination. The boys are well trained for the senior team next year.
