Coach Houston Powell is an extra- ordinary man. He has been named Coach of the Year in 4AA and Runner- up for two consecutive years and he has the distinction of being the first coach in RHS history to lead the varsity foot- ball team to a district and bi-district championship. The job of a teacher and a coach is one that carries much re- sponsibility. Coach Powell has shown in the past that he is capable of assuming both jobs and being successful in each. Because of this the annual staff wishes to dedicate the 1972 an- nual to a most deserving man - Coach Houston Powell. ,-42, 3:51, J ,5,.',,- rf lil r:ugLFts ' :,7'!fflf'- fu- 43:- g 'rn ,..1 u-. . Last year Coach Powell coached a 7-3 season for the Eagles year in 4AA and won South Plains Coach of the Year. This year he was named runner-up. The Eagles along with all of the coaching staff worked long hours to obtain the title of District, and Bi-district Champions. They worked five hours a day during two-a-days workouts and after school for two hours until the long winning season was over, But with hard work, Coach Powell 's Christian ideals, teamwork, and sportsmanship virtues payed out in the end. Bi-Disfrici Crown AL.. -,A... The Eagles started their winning season against New Deal, de- feating the Lions, 13- O. The Proud Warbirds ended the season with a 3 loss and 9 win re- cord, This was the be- ginning of the Eagle dynesty in 71. I No. 23, Keith fStoney Burky Stone, shows his balance, speed, and determination to win, while chalking up his first football honor by achiev- ing Honorable-Mention All- District. Here he is shown against the Slaton Tigers. The Eagles lost to the Tigers to a score of 20- Jimmy fMcDowellj Matsler helps the Eagles to go to the top by putting a smashing tackle on one of the Lions running backs. Also, backing the play is Walter fEudyj Mann. Jimmy and Walter both achieved the honor of All-South Plains. To prove how the Eagles stood out in this game, New Deal went on to win District and then Bi-District, but was de- feated at Regional. Y Eagles A+ Work Hose fBozoj Brown, smells paydirt and nothing is going to stop him from scoring that crucial touchdown in the Tahoka game, the score was 10-6. On the play to allow Mr, Brown to score is Wayne Morris. Many of the touchdowns scored during the season was by the help of Wayne 's downfield blocking. Coach Dean Elliott rarely shows his emotion over anything but the pressure during the Tahoka game was to great before the Eagles scored. Also helping the Eagles by cheering the spirit was Walter Mann and Ricky fWi11iej Peel. AE l Flging Eagles Explore New Heighis LOOK, UP IN THE SKY! !! IS IT A BIRD OR PLANE??'? No, it.'s the winning of a foot- ball game. Yes, it was this moral-building idea that helped the Eagles defeat the Denver City Mustangs, 16-6. It was the cheerleaders' idea to fly over the practice field during one of the Eagles ' practices. They tossed out candy, bubblegum, and streams of paper from the plane which were filled with words of spirit. Brenda Rowan, Connie Edwards, and Tim Ridpath flew in the Eagle Booster. Some people say it was thepep rally that won the game, but the Spirit Machine had a lot to do with it. 3 A John Gentry broke his leg in the Spur game which they won 40-0. John played an important role in the achievement of the District crown before his injury. James qDickj Dickey and Brent qBrunoj Davis helped with the victory over the DC Mustangs. Brent was un- lucky enough to break his leg in the New Deal game at the first of the season. :lx 1 1 wr 1 f Coach Dean Elliott revived Kenny Maines during the Post game, which the Eagles won with a score of 33-0. Coach Elliott is the head trainer on the varsity squad, and Kenny is one of his frequent patients. Kenny started for the Eagles as center and has been on the varsity for three years. The recently organized group wear lavender puffy-sleeved shirts and white pants. The highlight of the year came in April when all band members went on tour and presented concerts at six area schools.
