She was a gracious, entertaining hostess. Shown above are Miss Weeg and part of the annual staff. The cake read, They said it couldn't be done! The deli ht- ful little girl at the right, being fongly cuddled by Miss Weeg, is Buff, the daughter of a roommate. Buff had nothing to say but good about Miss Weeg, and it was evident that she would fight anybody who had anythin different 8 to say. Buff said that she and Weeg were Pals. Dedicated - for Her Service and We wish to dedicate this 1966 Eagle to a teacher whom we feel is one of the most deserving persons in our school system. An English teacher, the annua staff advisor, and the sponsor of the National Honor Societ --Miss Wee sacrifices her time ang ener ies to ielp 8 the Roosevelt Student body. She has no pets, and her professional creed is one of fairness and equality. She de- mands the very best that a student can achieveg her standards are high and at times seem unattainable. School is a serious business to her, and her class- room is one of order, strictness, and ed ucation. On the outside she may seem stern and heartless, but as students pass through the doors of R. H. S. , they look back, and remember her with deep re- spect and an almost reverent devotion. Devotion . .xffztryifigl all-.f -.. it L ' ' ' 'fre ii gl ,I ',, 1,,Igl...,- ' 1 .11 if r, gal' ' I. 1 1' lr , lf. Miss Weeg takes time out to help Ruth before she 'rl goes to the State 1 '.,. Meet. The Other Side of ci Very Wondegful Woman . . . There is another side of the teacher that few students take the time to discover. After hours she becomes a woman of tenderness and sentimen- tality. She loves animals, especially horses. As a youth she was an active rodeo participant, and she still feels that blue jeans are the only kind of clothes to wear. In her spare time, Miss Weeg plays the Spanish guitar and sings. Her conception of the perfect eveninrg is the music of Ray Charles, a warm ireplace, and a good book. At present, her only ambition is to obtain her Masters' Degree and to conquer the language of French. Miss Weeg loves to abble in hobbies, especially when it's artistic. She is a very generous person, and despite her crowded class- room schedule, she takes the time to save cigarette packages to give to the foundation for the aiding o the blind. lf a student is observant, he will notice a smile sneak into her facial expression sometimes even a laugh. She has a heart of gold. Once when asked by an English IV class why she didn't attend graduation exercises, she replied, Because I knew I would cry. gg J.' ,, ,jj A , J X.,-N . X , t 1 . -- -.... Students of Roosevelt Schools: It is a wonderful feeling to know that we live in a country with such prosperity as America offers: to enjoy its freedoms, privileges and security. These things we enjoy because our fathers and fore- fathers worked and suffered to make them possible for us. Our pos- terity will be privileged to enjoy such only if we work and sacrifice to see that America remains free and strong. bet us not be guilty of taking these things for granted, acting as though our country owes us all these things, but rather let us ask What do I owe my country for the blessings that I enjoy ? Let us be good Americans so that this country may ever be the wonderful place which we know it to be. You can do this by making every effort to equip yourselves to be citi- zens, who not only enjoy, but contribute to the American way. Congratulations to the Annual staff for this splendid book. Through your leadership we are privileged to enjoy the memories of your school days. Your work on this Annual has been a job well done . Sincerely, Marvin 'Williams Superintendent Superintendent, Always on the The job of being superintendent calls for an extremely busy schedule, but Mr. Wil- liams finds time in between his numerous activities to teach a class and to inspire students in their pursuit of worthy endeav- ors. Whether irbe in your studies, sports, band, or building an annual such as this one, if you have done the best you could with what you had to work with or play with, you can hold up your head in the pres- ence of any one and be proud. May I congratulate the student body for making this such a pleasant year. To the Seniors of '66, I wish for you the best of everything in the years that lie ahead. To the others, we look forward to having you with us next year. Congratulations, Seniors, Annual Staff, Teachers, and students for a job well done. A. E. Smith, Principal any School Board at Work For Our Interest . X ak Lug, . The Board of Education is responsible for providing education for the girls and boys of this school district. A11 decisions are made and backed by the main ques- lion, - what is the best for the students? Many of the important policy-making responsibilities are establishing of the school budget, approving the employment of all professional employees, and establishing the rules and regulations under which all school operations are scheduled and performed. The board works endlessly for the best interest of Roose- velt High and its students. Marvin Troy Buddy Ear Williams Thomas Hettler Hammett hui 'LL-r CAROLYN BARRE KERMON BOND ARCHIE CLANTON L T. You may see your- self gazing out the window at a beautiful spring day while a teacher explains in a monotonous voice the difference between inflation and deflation or why x equals y. You may find yourself sitting entranced as he explains why Hamlet was mad. You had favor- ite teachers and favorite subjects. You were given assignments you didn't mind doing and those which you dreaded. Although you may not have realized it, your teachers and your textbooks were preparing you for the adult world you would face when you left the classroom. Another vital part of school is what happens be- hind the scenes. Linda Whitson joined the staff at mid-semester filling a vacancy in the English Department. The cafeteria workers always continue to serve our meals with gleaming smiles, regardless of the comments on the food. The custodians never complain about having to sweep the floor several extra times because we incessantly track in mud on those rainy days: and, last but not least, the bus drivers loyally make their tedious routes, although the heaters seldom work and at times, they don't reach school until lunch. The students and people of the community should com- mend these people for their untiring services. 4' I-'T +6 - 1: I th ,t , . nl 5 Jil h-wi' W N --+ If K Here We G0 Again . r Fey,- V' y.-,F fl yy Ee lx 42,5 96311 is-'f 1 Ai i W fl . - I .X,,, .. pf, V a.. ...,. The students share the excitment of a football game, the nervousness of semester tests, the disappoint- ment of losing a basketball game, and the peace of knowing that graduation will become a reality. The student organizations give a student an opportunity to clutter his schedule with activities and responsibilities in the field of his interest. When the echoes of a school year have passed, the pleasant and beautiful mem- ories will be locked in one's heart forever. Many of these mo- ments, which we shall treasure, will be relived each time we open this yearbook. 4-m,. ge, I, , ITYVT A Q. ' '- - .'Qc..,.' ' Q,,.,1'.EJ6-ij-gig s 4 , V T.. The room is buzzing with activity. On one corner are girls typing frantically. Some people are working on their articlesg two staff members are absent - trying to get an inter- view with the coach on the topic of tomorrow night's big game. It seems that the editor is the only one who truly knows what is going on. To the casual on- looker, it may seem that these are a bunch of people running around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off. All too often, we, the student body, take for granted the easy-to-read pages and tastefully arranged selections of articles and pictures that go to make up a successful publication. The combined efforts of many students and a teacher who are willing to work deserve our loyal support. We would like to pay tribute, in some small way, to the fine staff of this, our sister publication. Uh! Those Awful Deadlines!! . . Each year the Eagle gets better and better. It is not yet perfect, but this year's Eagle staff has worked very hard to make their book better than those of past years. In addi- tion to the students' pictures, activi- ' ties, sports, and faculty that each year's book contains, this year's staff has added a number of original ideas that have improved the effi- ciency of the book's preparation and the quality of its content. When a person has graduated from high school, one of his most treasured souvenirs is his yearbook. It is his personal record of those old friends, crazy fads, and enjoyable experiences that made up the most memorable four years of his life. Although we are often more apt to remember the unpleasant rather than the pleasant times in our lives, our school yearbooks remind us that high school was more than home- I Q0 5-.JAX work and final exams. The staff of the Eagle has put forth their best effort to compose a book that will be of lasting sentimental value to those who want to remember their high school years. , 1 y .x.. --.mf 9, 5:ief:'uf '-QS.:- 'fi' :S-i4 g..,y w i1v.wmf QM! His smile was like the morning sun, Beaming love to all he knew. And though his pain increased each day, His love of life shone through. He turned those happy eyes to me And asked, Oh, lf I pray, Will God grant me my one true wish, To run and play one day? I answered him, Have faith my son, The Lord will find a way. 'Though weaker, weaker grew his limbs Brighter grew his eyes of gray. The doctors said, There is no chance, Please don't lead him on. But l could not bring myself to tell My son his hope was gone. The Elementary Section Is Dedicated 150 the Memory of Maylene Clark . EYES OF GRAY By Ruth Rucker Now, my son he is no more, He vanished with the night. God granted him his one true wish, It was a glorious sight. His eyes of gray were wild with pride, His rosy cheeks so red, His courage never faltered once, Then finally he was put to bed. He told us, God has blessed me so, He made me walk again. l'll n'er forget those tender eyes, Tough tear-dimmed by his pain. I shall mourn the death of him, Yet I will miss him so. He came into my life one day, And I knew that he must go. That winter night the Lord did take My precious son His way, But I am ,left with the memories, Of his wonderful eyes of gray. Elementary Increases Its Staff . . Dear Students: Responsibility is something that must be shared by parents, teachers, and pupils, if our school is to fulfill its purpose. We, as parents and teachers, must have the same interest in, the same ambitions for, the same pa- tience with, and the same dedication to our mutual re- sponsibility. If we, as parents and teachers, will show the boys and girls we have a sincere interest in them, they will some day, in some way return an appreciation for our part in guiding them to a life with which they can be pleased. A Bring the 1965-66 Eagle to an End! During the past year, we have cut many classesg worked many mornings, afternoons, and nightsg cussed and discussed every detail that went into the making of this yearbook. With wrinkled brows and gray hair, we heaved a sigh as deadlines passed. But through it all, we smiled when we felt like crying and enjoyed every minute of the process of bringing your 1966 EAGLE to you. Our undying gratitude goes to a superintendent who had the faith in us to allow us to develop this new grade of annual. A thank you also goes to a fine sponsor, the many cooperative members of the faculty, and in the end, to a patient student body. At this point, you take overg it is your book to read and re-read for many years to come.
