BOYS SE IOR CLASS HI TORY The 68 boys who make up the class of 1942 entered Rome High as freshmen in September, 193 8. 198 entered as freshmen but only 68 have survived. Our biggest memories of that year are topped by the surprise that we were not the most important people in Rome or in the High School, we remember well how the sophomores impressed it upon us that we were lowly freshmen, nothing more. But we went to work on our subjects fCivics, English, Mathematics and Historyj and soon found that they weren't0 so hard after all. Interesting events of that year were:' The new Rome I-figh Band made its debut under the direction of Mr. A. W. Derrick .... Part of our building burned, and we had to take some classes in the gym. The Fall of 1939 found us as Rome High Sophomores, and how big and important we felt. We were saddened, however, by the girls' moving out to their new High Sclpolg the shock of their leaving was made gradual, however, by the necessity of having Split- session days at school until final work on the new building was completed. Q - V. , As Juniors of Rome High we felt like veterans of high school work, and we en- tered full blast into as many high school activities as our schedules wouldipermit. fought on the football teams, the basketball teams, and the baseball teams, we joined the Hi-Y if our records and experience were good enoughg we put out an issue of The Roman, and we participated in the interesting meetings of the Junior Scribblers, the French Club, and other organizations. An interesting event of that year was the partial destruction of our chimney by a severe blast of lightning. We had a four-day holiday until the rebuilding was done. As we entered the now-familiar portals of old Rome High for our last year of study and play, we felt that our Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman years had slipped by all too quicklyg we realized suddenly that we were to have only nine more months up here. So we plunged into our work in order to make our last year a memorable one. It was memorable also for these events: the study of the Bible was introduced at Rome High . . . Defense stamps were sold by the Hi-Y to help Uncle Sam win the war . . we listened to President Roosevelt as he demanded that Congress declare war on the ,laps . . . we were taught some of the fundamentals of good marching so we could present a neat appearance at parades. Now our four years are over. Looking back on them, we see that they weren't perfectg but they were full of interest, and we know that we will remember them happily and seriously.
