BOYS SE IOR CLASS HI TORY The 68 boys who make up the class of 1942 entered Rome High as freshmen in September, 193 8. 198 entered as freshmen but only 68 have survived. Our biggest memories of that year are topped by the surprise that we were not the most important people in Rome or in the High School, we remember well how the sophomores impressed it upon us that we were lowly freshmen, nothing more. But we went to work on our subjects fCivics, English, Mathematics and Historyj and soon found that they weren't0 so hard after all. Interesting events of that year were:' The new Rome I-figh Band made its debut under the direction of Mr. A. W. Derrick .... Part of our building burned, and we had to take some classes in the gym. The Fall of 1939 found us as Rome High Sophomores, and how big and important we felt. We were saddened, however, by the girls' moving out to their new High Sclpolg the shock of their leaving was made gradual, however, by the necessity of having Split- session days at school until final work on the new building was completed. Q - V. , As Juniors of Rome High we felt like veterans of high school work, and we en- tered full blast into as many high school activities as our schedules wouldipermit. fought on the football teams, the basketball teams, and the baseball teams, we joined the Hi-Y if our records and experience were good enoughg we put out an issue of The Roman, and we participated in the interesting meetings of the Junior Scribblers, the French Club, and other organizations. An interesting event of that year was the partial destruction of our chimney by a severe blast of lightning. We had a four-day holiday until the rebuilding was done. As we entered the now-familiar portals of old Rome High for our last year of study and play, we felt that our Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman years had slipped by all too quicklyg we realized suddenly that we were to have only nine more months up here. So we plunged into our work in order to make our last year a memorable one. It was memorable also for these events: the study of the Bible was introduced at Rome High . . . Defense stamps were sold by the Hi-Y to help Uncle Sam win the war . . we listened to President Roosevelt as he demanded that Congress declare war on the ,laps . . . we were taught some of the fundamentals of good marching so we could present a neat appearance at parades. Now our four years are over. Looking back on them, we see that they weren't perfectg but they were full of interest, and we know that we will remember them happily and seriously. icem GIRLS SE 1011 CLASS W FRANCES BkoAcH Vice President 'F Q LL BETTY BOYD President W, 1 L7 EDITH COMBS Secrvlary O,NEAL VEATCH . . GIRLS SE IOR CLASS HI TORY September, 1938, proved to be an exciting time for quite a few freshmen girls. After climbing a great number of iron steps, a large brick building known as Rome High came into view. The en- trance seemed friendly enough, so we walked bravely in. We soon were stopped at a table and were shown how to write our year's schedule. After registering, we were told that it would be all right for us to go home, but we were to be at school on Monday morning promptly at eight-thirty o'clock. On Monday morning at eight-thirty o'clock our education began. After being directed by those very friendly seniors to our home rooms, which usually turned out to be the library, Cafeteria, or even Mr. Brewer's office, we began to get to work. When this first week of torture was over, things ran more smoothly. We began to respect our upperclassmen, and we even felt natural sitting in garbage cans. QSome of the seniors thought that was amusing, but it wasn't amusing to us for lunch sacks and apple cores to be thrown on our clean dresses. Wi! studied hard until the Christmas holidays, then we went home feeling that we deserved all gifts that Santa Claus had for us. Our activities were important this year. We had representatives in the Freshman Literary Club, Glee Club, and Band. During the remaining part of the year, we had to dodge the workmen who were repairing our building. But we managed to keep them off of our minds enough to pass all our subjects. The next year, 1939, we were real sophomores. We' had the privilege of directing the freshmen anywhere we wanted to, and we did. Q When the fun of the first few weeks was over, we began to study our lessons. Everything was more difficult this year. Besides all of our other lessons, there were World History, Latin, and Second Year Math. . We had a large number of representatives in school activities in 1939 and 1940, including the Band, Sophomore Literary Club, Glee Club, and athletics. The greatest time of our entire High School life was November, 1939. We had a new school building just for the girls, and not one of those teasing boys could be seen in our classes. We were very proud of our building with all of its modern conveniences, but about a week later we began to miss our teasing friends. We looked like different people. Our hair stayed rolled up sometimes and our faces looked pale without make-up, but we managed to pull through. There was one thought on every- one's mind, We will graduate in just two more years. The next year we were juniors, and our home rooms were upstairs with the seniors. Our entire class had new and more difficult subjects, French, Geometry, Commercial Subjects, American His- tory, and Advanced Home Economics. But we didn't work all the time. There were even more activities this year. Many entered into the Dramatic Club, French Club, Junior Roman Staff, Scribbler's Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Band, and Bas- ketball. Near the end of the year, several of our members attended the Georgia State Press Association in Athens, Georgia, and the Tri-Hi-Y week-end Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Our junior year ended with one thought in our minds, Next year we will be seniors and occupy those upstairs rooms on the left. Finally September, 1941, arrived, and for the fourth time we registered. We were seniors and we truly felt dignified. Our dignity disappeared when we saw our schedules. The list which was headed with Chemistry, Algebra, Shorthand, Typing and Senior English, seemed to have our entire year pretty well filled out. The activities this year were practically the same as the others we had had, but the Senior Roman Staff felt quite a responsibility. There were four Romans to publish, and we knew what a task that would be. After Christmas, things began to happen. Graduation cards were ordered, measurements were taken for caps and gowns, and large pictures were handed in for the Roman. To top all of these was Kid Day. On this day we all felt a little nearer Our goal. About two months before graduation, we felt the urge to study. Maybe we were pushed a little bit, but deep down in our hearts a little voice kept saying, This is your last year. You want to graduate, donit you? So we studied. 1 d Our goal as Seniors of Girl's High has been reached and now as Seniors of the Class of 1942 we p e ge: Yesterday is gone, Tomorrow is uncertain, Today is here. Despite a set-back at the outset of the season in losing to the championship Bulldogs of Athens, 26-0, the Blue and Gold Eleven 'came back with such a bang that it won the next five t games, including an upset victory over ,strong North Fulton of Atlanta. These five games, and 'their scores, are as follows: Rome vs. Fulton, 34-03 against North Fulton, 20-0, against Dalton, J 39-123 against Sewanee 20-0, and over Marist, 21-6. Central High of Chattanooga stood off the Q sgkoman offense and battered the Roman defense to win by a score of 13-0g but the Hilltoppers , came right back to defeat LaGrange 27-0 and Centre 26-14. if The Thanksgiving Day Classic between Rome and the undefeated Oedartown Bull D0gs ended the season for the R.H.S. eleven. Rome scored in the first quarter, but could not push over g another point throughout the remainder of the game, while Cedartown, after being thrown back time and again, managed to score the tying seven points in the last quarter. BASKETBALL The 1941-42 Rome High Basketball season consisted of two games before the Christmas holi- days, and 16 games thereafter. 'Although both teams lost the two opening encounters to Calhoun and Acworth, the boys gathered enough power and deception to run up a season's score of 13 vic- ' tories to 5 defeats. The girls, battling against inexperience and tough competition, managed to revive in the last of the season to Win 7 games out of 18. Following the pre-holiday losses, the boys divided games with Trion, Marietta, Calhoun, and Acworth, and defeated Tallapoosa, Cartersville, McHenry, Summerville, and North Fulton two games each. The next stop was the G.l.A.A. tournament at Macon, the Romans' first contest was with the favored Tech High team, and although the game was a close one, it was decided in the last few minutes of play in favor of the Atlanta team. The Rome High Girls put up a brave struggle against better teams, and lack of experience to win 7 games toward the close of the season. McHenry, Tallapoosa, and Summerville were defeated ' l once, to make the season's score 7 wins out of 18. twice, and Cartersvil e ROME 0 ROME 32 ROME 20 ROME 39 ROME 20 ROME 21 ROME 0 ROME 27 ROME 26 ROME 7 govdfai X: ' xLe,Ys- Q1 ta- H R' 1.3 Kiowa Akm , .
