Knowing that school is not only the final football scores, the polished essays, and the successful dramatic productions but also the muscle-aching calisthenics, the frantic hours of research, and the back- stage jitters, the yearbook staff has made a few changes in the 1952 Fairfieldiana to depict this vital existence in the same informal way that the students create it. To do this the staff has included classroom scenes from all'courses, fadrlty by departments, the senior history with the class that made it history, and candid shots of plays, games, dances, and organi- zations. The Fainieldiana for 1952 is the story of one year at Roger Itudlowe High School. HIS ls Fairfield on the Merritt Parkway, and to the 1,134 high nag, ff f 1, h ,FN . pb . SENIOR COUNCIL T THE traditional tapping ceremony in june twelve proud juniors became the new Senior Council. In September, as seniors. they started a busy year of varied activities, advised by Miss Copeland and Mr, Pitruzzello. After a bang-up Club '52 dance. the Coun- cil supervised the election of a Red Feather girl, who turned out to be Ann Molloy, and in October played escorts and dishwashers for Parents' Night. During the football season the Senior Council added interest to the games with posters and mimeo- graphed programs, helped the freshmen with cheers at pep assemblies. and in November sponsored the B-F Hop. Mid-December found the same crew hard at work creating Christmas atmosphere. The decorations -notably the snow on the windows, the tree in the cafeteria, and the music between classes-put every- one in a tinsel and mistletoe mood. Then two days before Christmas vacation the Council gave the annual Council members change placards . . . wash dishes . . . approve 3 bugs , ,.,,.,, as 1 Rich Gribko, Anne Curlee, Mary Lou Lobdell Bob lnderdohnen, janet Armor, jack Hubbard Donna Pearson, Anne Curlee decor TRUMAN CHAsE clan' advirer PRorxAlsLY without Mr. Chase's aid, the class of '52 would never have gradu- ated! As upperclassmen turned eighteen, they became eligible for military service, and young people found it difficult to plan for a future with the possi- bility of being drafted half-way through college. Schol- arship deferments did help some, but Korea or college was still a toss-up. The current world crisis, presenting the same old problems with different names, turned history discus- sions from Nazism. Hitler, and the Fascists to Com- munism, Stalin, and the Reds. However, with George Gross, presidentg Steve Malin, vice-president, Betsy Bracken, secretary, and Anne Curlee, treasurer, the juniors also faced the more immediate problems of beating Bassick, apple-polishing, and money-making. Realizing that senior banquet, yearbook, and gradua- tion cost money, everyone helped Anne raise the funds, and money-making schemes became the big talk around school. A committee of the National Association of Sec- ondary School Principals founded the National Honor Society in 1921. Roger Ludlowe joined the organiza- tion in 1955 as the Fairheld Chapter. The society is designed to honor those who have achieved distinction not only in the academic field but also in social and extra-curricular activities, The purposes of the Society have been to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, and to develop character. In order to become a candidate for membership, a student must be in the top third of his class scholasti- cally and have satisfactory records in school citizen- ship. service. leadership, and character. The induction consists of an impressive ceremony in which each member is pledged to uphold the ideals of the Society and is given the National Honor Society emblem to wear. and Ieadershi bi? Stapler-using tricky single-wing formations, Staples defeated Ludlowe for the second straight year, 3-O. Fumbles caused the defeat, as Staples was completely outplayed in the second half. Harding-playing under the lights, Harding scored on two desperation plays for a 14-0 decision. BASKETBALL The basketball team finished the season with a record of 6 wins and 14 defeats. Two victories were added to the record when both Central games were forfeited to us-one because of Ernie Petrucciands ineligibility and the other because of Gene Bethea's overage status. With these two games, the record was 8-12. The team started off well by winning five of the Brst eight games, four in succession. Then it ran- into Central which ended the four game streak with an easy 65-24 triumph. From then on, the Taylormen J V.-Kneeling L. Levy, manager: M. Burger, man- ager. Standingx D. DiMattia, J. Bob Meeker led the team in scoring with 193 points and was awarded the trophy as the team's best foul shooter. Prospects for next year look bright as three lettermen with plenty of experience will return. They are guards Joe Stanovsky and Arnold Steeves, and sophomore forward Joe Gross. This is an honor society which aims to establish and advance standards of excellence in dramatic arts, and to create an active and intelligent interest in dramatic arts among boys and girls in high school. Mr. Salisbury is the troupe sponsor for Roger Ludlowe. Members are elected to the society if they are in the upper third of their class and have amassed a required number of points through acting, stage work, or directing. THE stage was all set for the last scene in the dress rehearsal for junior Mirr. Every- one was waiting breathlessly for Judy, the adolescent heroine, to appear in her full glory. Out she came clutching her side. her face full of emotion. ANN BENNETT had broken the zipper on her dress! A roar of laughter went up from the bystanders. The anti-climax had a spontaneous effect on the cast members, who were all tired out from weeks of stren- uous rehearsal. Two nights later before a packed house-a demure and radiantly lovely Judy-in a neu' gown-appeared in the last scene to leave for the dance with HASKELL CUMMINGS. When the curtain rang down, a burst of applause reached the ears of the happy cast. In the beginning of December the Komians had completed their major work for the year. Later meetings were spent learning about the theatre from Mr. Salisbury and occasional visitors. Doing spontaneous skits and sketches produced great fun and satisfaction. 193.6 r the backdrop s eq I, r 'biz Q will the vim JUNIOR MISS , C Q8 nqkth ab O Ann Bennett , MNA Sealed! A. Robbins. C. '- - RS OF AMERICA Membership in the Future Teachers of America is an invaluable experience to anyone who wishes to make teaching his profession. An over-all picture of the teaching field and its requirements was presented to members in various ways during this year. The monthly meetings were well-planned in advance to lit in as much useful information as possible. Juniors and Seniors were formally admitted into the F. T. A, in an impressive induction ceremony, Several inter- esting speakers came to talk to the group-among them Barbara XY'alsh O'Connor, a young teacher her- self. who told of her experience and faculty and stud- ents from New Britain State Teachers' College, who told of the trends and opportunities in the field of teaching. The juniors and Seniors spent some time practice teaching in the elementary schools. One meet- ing was held on a national basis, and Miss Banks showed pictures of her National Education Associa- tion sponsored trip to Hawaii. In April F. T. A. mem- bers visited Danbury State Teachers' College. After such a full and informative program many future teachers were graduated from high school with a feeling of pride and conhdence in their chosen pro- fession. This should be an event of the past since the Audio-Visual Aids Club has come into being This club under the direction of Mr Ricciardr is working to establish a system of trained operators with proper know how and equipment to supply satis factorily all the classroom demands This year was mainly an organization year during which Mr. Ric- ciardi and a group of senior boys, already familiar with the machines, worked hard to train operators, establish regulations for equipment supervision, and arrange a system whereby an operator will always be available. Already workable plans have been completed to ful fill the main purpose of the club-to render useful service to the school in a modern Held of education R011 I Rosenman R Coldberg J W'alsh S Anderson ure prerzlerzl M Trend J Donald prcrzdcnt W Art feffetarg ircarurer L Levx A Bilxard R Rrtciardr arlrmr Run 7 R Moore R Bergman E Olson Thibault fl Carroll A Thxberg.
