They preface our every new experience. Each succeeding doorway through which we pass enables us to increase our knowledge and to gain new interests, and it stands behind us as a milestone marking our widening range at vision. Seldom, also, has a day passed when we have not encountered another type of door. Every new xenture or idea is a doorway leading to other ventures, other ideas. Schools are the doorways to education, education is the doorway to lite. i f ROOM li N f, Q kb R d' V rf R M-ti' Q ,. ' 'isingg - - '11 , 'J ' ' 144 fr!! D ,. MARSDON U. GRUBB Mr. Grubb is not only the principal of Rocky River High School but also the friend of every student. l-lis genuine interest in the faculty and students, his willingness to co- cperate in all activities, and his broad-minded outlook make Mr. Grubb a man to admire and a man to whom students, parents, and teachers feel free to turn for consultation. Handling the myriad details of his office and co-ordinating school life with community life are tasks denanding of Mr. Grubb infinite patience and tact. We are fortunate to have Mr. Grubb as our principal, DE GF GIRL MISS FRANCES MCKEE Miss McKee as the dean of girls has the responsibility ofthe welfare and the cornportment of the girls of Rocky River High School. Her understanding and graciousness have endeared her to all who come in contact with her. Helping to oversee activities of Student Council, Girls' Council, and Friendship Club and teaching two classes of English are just a few of Miss McKee's duties. Many seniors have been grateful that they were able to turn to her for advice in choosing a college. Miss McKee is truly an inspiration to the girls ot our school, BCARD GF EDUCATIG MR. SIEDEL MR. SMILEY MRS. LEPONTOIS MRS. JOSSELYN MR. SOLLENBERGER MR. DETTERMAN Planning for the kind of education which will enable the students of Rocky River to take their places in a democratic society is the responsibility delegated to the members of the board of education. Through the foresight and good judgment of this group the public schools of Rocky River are maintained at a high level of educational efficiency. The mem- bers of the board give generously of their time, knowledge, and experience to make our school system one of which we are proud. The community, as well as the schools, suffergd a great loss in the passing of Mr. Edward W. Ferry, who served on the board of education for three years. Officers for the year are Mr. Frank Siedel, president, Mr. l-lylas E. Smiley, vice-president, and Mrs, Mildred Josselyn, clerk-treasurer. Oqher members are Mrs. Allison LePontois, Mr. Carl W. Sollenberger, and Mr. Orville Detterman. eleven GLISH l-ligh school students are required ta study English each yearg therefore all Riverites are enrclled in the regular classes. In addition, seventy-eight have elected to study public speaking, which is included in the department at English. is Englsh class is one of eighteen that meet dailw in River l-lign. STUDE T CDUNCIL Student Council has completed another satisfying year of leadership and service at Rocky River High School The officers, Dick Olmstead, Tom Yost, Janet Meilander, and Steve Beckman, together with the committee chairmen and faculty advisers, Miss Gray, Miss McKee, and Mr Grubb, made up the advisory committee which guided the council in its wide range of services The highly successful student-governed study halls were set up in September Cafeteria hostesses efficiently man- aged the student-supervised lunch periods. All former records were broken by this year's charity drives. Varif ous committees scheduled and directed all school-wide assembly programs, publicized all important events, as- sisted in the care of our building and grounds, supervised the collection of tax stamps, and carried out a program of recreation during lunch periods and after games. One of the committees published a student handbook. Council was also instrumental in securing Dr. Slutz, an expert counselor on youth problems, for a three-day clinic, EXECUTIVE c F ihettler S Willic1rns,A Ritchf, R Brown, C Hoppe, P Schaeffer D Dau J Varney J MCil0r1der,T Yost R OlmstCaL1,S Beckman glass H Gro DICK OLMSTEAD ,gg Ml Qc-venfy-one Row 4 -- A Rnrdme, R 'Dwmk sfeogf C H:.rm!,y, C F2f,,1,.fx sen C Hoppe, J Mggfe J Sdumoker Row Ziff Sheffler, R Schucla D Do.gIcse J Dawg, D Hcrhjoy, T Yost, M Vench Raw 2-C Schuele, H Grev- sYcc1,S Wullnoms, R Brown P Schaeffer, R, Srewcrv R Swonk,J Curfmon Row I-fl Menlonder, S Beck- mon, R Wmtflcskl, H Emu S Ewing C Juulun, P Choc? From the annual Kick-off dance to the spring bake sale, from our buzz sessions to Pa-Ma-Me, Friendship Club members combined service and fun in exact proportions for a wonderfully successful year. One of the high spots of the year was the superb interpretation of The Creation by Mr. Charles King, formerly of Karamu House, another was the visit of Miss Mathews from India. Other memorable events were thc Moms' party, the Pops' party, and the March Sock l-lop. Equally important were our service projects, dressing dolls as Christmas presents for poor children, caring for our six adopted girls at Tamassec, a girls' school in South Carolina, and working at our service meetings. The officers were Rhonda Brown, president, Sally Priest, vice-president, Pat Schaeffer, secretary, and Sally Ewing, treasurer. The pitchers are loosening up their arms, and the bat- ters are playing pepper ball. The team is anxiously waiting tor the weather to clear. Holding down the first sack should be Graham Campbell, the leading RBI hitter last season. At the hot corner will be Mike Bailey. Mike will probably be the clean-up hitter. Dick Richeson will be hurling the spheres and Jim Pietrangelo will be catching them. This battery has been charged for three years and is now ready to let go. Bill Domhott and Dick Mancuso will be used in the outfield. Both boys swing from the southpaw side and will be highly valued in this capacity. Frank McNabb and Harding Christ should till out the infield. Frank has had experi- ence on the keystone sack and will probably commence the season there, Harding will plug the shortstop gap. Other prospects for the team include Bob Bloesinger and Reesor Wood- Iing, outtielders, Larry Moir, pitcher, and Dick Mitchell, Catcher. Thirty-nine boys have reported out for bJseball.
