River bl Fairview 0 Coach Randall Motts left for the Navy in River I2 Bedford 0 me middle of the season and Mr. Crites Rocky River had a successful season this year in football. Last year's tirst string team was mostly seniors, and, consequently Coach Motts had very few veterans to start with this fall. The only holdovers from last season's squad were Gil Miltenberegr, All- Southwestern Conference center, Dave Davies, former guard, who did a bang-up job at fullback, Ray Sarles, another former guard, who was this year's defensive signal caller from the halfback spot, and Duke Bitler, back again at tailback. Bob Miller and Dick Myers were our heavy tackles, while Bob Friesner and Don Kelly filled end positions. "Little Joe" Sandvick was left guard, while right guard position was filled by Ken Koster. ln the back field at left half was Bud Hughes. The boys, fired with enthusiasm by the l942 record, got right into the swing of things and took the first three games. River suffered a serious loss in the fourth game on our field with Berea. In a touch- down drive, Duke Bitler fractured his collar bone and was unable to play for the remain- der of the season. River went into a slump, losing the next three games. However, on November 5, our old rival, Fairview, visited us. The boys, determined to take this game, licked Fairview by the score of 5l-0, then defeated Bedford a week later on their own field. Coach Motts was well- pleased with this football season, his last at River for the duration. Roland Seed, new- comer to River this year, proved a very capable captain, and was ably assisted by veterans Bud Berkey, Johnny Lutz, Bob Loesch, Hank Enger, and many others. I-ive hundred-fifty spectators jammed the gym to watch the final game against Ober- lin February l8. River trailed by the score of 20-I7 at the half. The boys re-entered the game with fresh determination, how- ever, and forged ahead, carrying a one point lead through the fourth quarter. When the buzzer for the final period sounded, the score stood River 34, Oberlin 33, and wildly excited spectators jammed the gym floor, and crowded around the players. At the annual basketball ban- quet, each boy was presented with a small gold basketball, through the courtesy of the parents, to signify that he was a conference champ. The large Conference Champion- ship trophy may now be seen in the trophy case opposite the office. As the Riverlet goes to press the base- ball and track seasons are just opening. Many interesting meetings were presented by ring group concerning different phases of relig- ion. Friendship and Hi-Y sponsored two mixers during the year. A panel discussion was held in March with members of both clubs participating. Friendship and Hi-Y also sponsored an inspiring Lenten Service at the Rocky River M. E. Church.
