With Don Bopp, president, Dick Heil, vice-president, and Bob Dillon, secretary-treasurer, we took our place in the kinder- garten of high school and bravely launched upon our glorious career at Rocky River High School. When the following September came, we anxiously looked forward to the unexplored realm of the eighth grade. At the beginning of the year we elected our class officers who ably led us through our second year of junior high school: Dick Heil, president, Glenn Combes, vice-president, Bob Dillon, secretary- treasurer. We were both socially and athletically minded and were well represented in scholarship, leadership, and service to the school. We thus prepared ourselves to head the junior high the following year. In our freshman year we presented our first dance, the semi-formal, "Shamrock Shuffle." Our class proved to have its full complement of leaders, when we elected Bud Hughes, president, Karl Ware, vice-president, Joan Wood, secretary, and Ken Armstrong, treasurer. We ended our year successfully with the traditiional freshman picnic. In the fall of '41 we made our way into the tenth grade and senior high. To head the class during the year, we elected Whitney Slaght, president, Duke Bitler, vice-president, Mickey ten McCormick, secretary, and Bill Watkins, treasurer. The annual sophomore dance, the Heartbeat, was held in February. In May, the sophomore picnic completed an enjoyable year. The class of '44 wisely chose Paul Robinson to lead us through our junior year with other efficient officers as: vice- president - Duke Bitler, secretary - Patty Duff, and treas- urer -- Karl Ware. The first big event of the year was the Harvest Hop, which was followed, a few months later, by the junior-senior party held at Beach gym. A great responsibility was taken on by one of our classmates when Dona Mae Burk- hardt was selected as the new editor of the Hi-Tide. We ended this eventful year with the realization that we were soon to become seniors. lt did not take us long to adapt ourselves to senior life. We soon chose our class officers, with the result that Ray Sarles was elected president, Glenn Combes vice-president, Patty Duff, secretary, Karl Ware, treasurer. The traditional semi-formal Senior Christmas Dance was held in December. A party to honor the boys who were leaving at mid-year was held in Janu- ary. At this time our class enjoyed dancing in the gym, a pro- gram of senior taelnt, and refreshments. Our senior play, "There Shall Be No Night" was presented to the public in March. The talented cast made both nights a great success. Three important events came within one week. On June 2, the traditional Senior Prom was held at the Lake Shore Hotel, Baccalaureate services took place in the high school auditorium the following Sunday, and to climax our school years, we, the seniors, were graduated from Rocky River High School on June the eighth, 1944. eleven fx ra K 'S s l f , 0 Y Nl t i X I N l il an. 4 Ik: 3,39 ...i- 1 ' ilwfx , .,, ' . f f . ., A ,J .. . Senior Clubs in Review FRIENDSHIP CLUB The Friendship Club started off the year with the traditional Kick-off Dance. Many interesting meetings were presented by ring group concerning different phases of relig- ion. Friendship and Hi-Y sponsored two mixers during the year. A panel discussion was held in March with members of both clubs participating. Friendship and Hi-Y also sponsored an inspiring Lenten Service at the Rocky River M. E. Church. The new plan of Hi-Y and Friendship sharing their meetings has been very successful and co- operation between the two clubs will stand as a model for the years to come. NATIONAL THESPIANS National Thespians got off to a good start this year by presenting their first play, "The Man Who Came To Dinner." This was the biggest success Rocky River High Shool had seen up to this time. ln Janu- ary new members were initiated into the club. Many interesting programs were pre- sented during the course of the year. One of the outstanding programs of the year was a one-act play given at one of the evening meetings by one of the public speaking classes. An interesting radio play, "Miss Liberty Goes to Town," was given before the senior high as an assembly. The year drew to an end with a enjoyable potluck supper. IYAKU lyaku started out the year with a picnic in the valley. This club had many inter- esting speakers including the following. Eugene Case, Mr. Surrarrerr, Miss Alice Young, and Mr. Works. Also, at each meet- ing three of the members gave a short talk. One of the outstanding events of the year was the tour of the Case Greenhouse on Palm Sunday. The year came to a close with the annual picnic. CURRENT FORUM Although Current Forum got off to a slow start this year, the meetings have been enjoyable and many diversified talks have been offered. Some of the outstanding speakers were Mayor Thomas, who told us of our city, Mrs. Whitcomb, who discussed our foreign policyg and Mr. Beimes who explained the problem of juvenile delin- quency. HI-Y One of the outstanding events at the be- ginning of the school year was the presen- tation of Major Allen Martini, veteran of many air missions over Europe. Dr. King from Lakewood and Norman Shaw from the Cleveland Press were other outstand- ing speakers during the year. In March members of the Hi-Y and their guests en- joyed the City-wide Hi-Y Dance at Hotel Cleveland. The present year's activities were brought to a close with the Sweetheart Banquet, May the twenty-seventh. thirty-eight -A----------------,--- The Year in Sports 40 FOOTBALL River West. River bl Fairview 0 Coach Randall Motts left for the Navy in River I2 Bedford 0 me middle of the season and Mr. Crites Rocky River had a successful season this year in football. Last year's tirst string team was mostly seniors, and, consequently Coach Motts had very few veterans to start with this fall. The only holdovers from last season's squad were Gil Miltenberegr, All- Southwestern Conference center, Dave Davies, former guard, who did a bang-up job at fullback, Ray Sarles, another former guard, who was this year's defensive signal caller from the halfback spot, and Duke Bitler, back again at tailback. Bob Miller and Dick Myers were our heavy tackles, while Bob Friesner and Don Kelly filled end positions. "Little Joe" Sandvick was left guard, while right guard position was filled by Ken Koster. ln the back field at left half was Bud Hughes. The boys, fired with enthusiasm by the l942 record, got right into the swing of things and took the first three games. River suffered a serious loss in the fourth game on our field with Berea. In a touch- down drive, Duke Bitler fractured his collar bone and was unable to play for the remain- der of the season. River went into a slump, losing the next three games. However, on November 5, our old rival, Fairview, visited us. The boys, determined to take this game, licked Fairview by the score of 5l-0, then defeated Bedford a week later on their own field. Coach Motts was well- pleased with this football season, his last at River for the duration. Roland Seed, new- comer to River this year, proved a very capable captain, and was ably assisted by veterans Bud Berkey, Johnny Lutz, Bob Loesch, Hank Enger, and many others. I-ive hundred-fifty spectators jammed the gym to watch the final game against Ober- lin February l8. River trailed by the score of 20-I7 at the half. The boys re-entered the game with fresh determination, how- ever, and forged ahead, carrying a one point lead through the fourth quarter. When the buzzer for the final period sounded, the score stood River 34, Oberlin 33, and wildly excited spectators jammed the gym floor, and crowded around the players. At the annual basketball ban- quet, each boy was presented with a small gold basketball, through the courtesy of the parents, to signify that he was a conference champ. The large Conference Champion- ship trophy may now be seen in the trophy case opposite the office. As the Riverlet goes to press the base- ball and track seasons are just opening.
