A, A., 1 2. HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS Company halt I ! About face I ! Seniors--at ease ! - The dress parade is soon to take place, You are to review the troops, to refresh your memories of the unforgetable experiences of the past five years. The parade is almost here. Here it is! With General Ready in command of the troops, we shall begin. First, the Rookies of 1938-39 appear-they are all out of step and are very ignorant of the school rules and regulations. They are under the command of Captain Jennings Mangum with First Lieutenant Katherine Elmore and Second Lieutenant George Valentine to aid him. ' The Parent Teachers Association graciously entertained them with a delightful party in the gymnasium. Later, they, the Freshman class, enjoyed an informal dance given by themselves. These social activities did wonders in building up their very low morale. Next come the Privates First Glass of the Sophmores of Company 1939-40 with Lee Stevens in command and First Lieutenant Carolyn Johnson and the Second Lieutenant Dot Turner and Margaret Winslow following after her. Captain Margaret Fountain and the Lieutenants Neill Nelson, Edgar Lambert, and Flake Chipleyi are given charge of things during the second semester. During this year they learn about many of the old tricks of their dear Alma Mater fsuch as A. W. O. LJ. Yes, they think that it is something to do these tricks, but what about when General Ready catches up with them? The men of the following Company of 1940-41 have a dazed and bewildered expres- sion on their faces. They are not sure of their rank, being neither Sophmores nor Juniors just plain Tenth Graders. They are beginning to feel important and are showing a definite interest in the W. A. A. C. S and the W. A. V. E. S of their group. They are beginning to be a real asset to the school. Another companylThe Eleventh grade of 1941-42 is now passing the reviewing stand. This is one Company that they shall well remember. As Juniors they need no re- calling of how they struggled through that year .Vigorously they sold subscriptions in order to be successful in their magazine campaign. They are very proud of themselves for earning more money for the Junior-Senior dance' than any other Junior class, Through most of their minds, "The Junior-Senior is a week off: it is tomorrow nightg it is tonight" is constantly running, Happily they dance that wonderful night away. Captain Ben Mayo, with the Lieutenants Neill Nelson, Nancy Dolier, and Betty Murchison, lead us first. When they are exhausted, Bill Thorp, Clara Fenner, Ann Larkin, and Jack Tay lor command or take charge during the second semester. Since December 7, 1942, many of the noble Cfommandos have left the passing parade to fight for Uncle Sam. This reduces the number of Juniors, but the ones at home are proud of their heroic deeds. Now--last, but not least in any way, comes the pride and joy of this parade, it is the Senior Class of 1942-43. Captain Jimmie Exum starts off in command of Company 1942-43, As fellow officers, Needham Carter, Alton Johnson, and Edith Mooring are there to aid him. Ben Mayo commands throughout the second semester with Lieutenants Jean Williams, Harvey Thomas, and Carson Dunning to help him. Their heads are held high as they take on the responsibilities that they shouldg they have worked hard and faithful: and yet, they realize how much more they could have done when is is too late to do anything about it, These wonderful and treasured years have new come to an end. and they, the Seniors, must leave their dear A.lma Mater to go into such a confused and war torn world. Proudly they march by ending this paradeg proudly they march, looking forward to a bright and glorious future some day. By Edith Mooring Page N ineteeu Page Twen ty PROPHECY - i953 Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Radio audience! This is your own news commenitator, Mana Burnett, bringing you the outstanding news events of the week. Tonight, I am especially privileged to be broadcasting from the immense auditorium of the Rocky Mount High School, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Here are gathered the alumni of the Class of '-lil for their tenth anniversary. This is one of the most outstanding gatherings of the age, because the Nation feels that it is the most spectacular class in its history. The majority of its members are now famous and outstanding in their fields of work. I am especially proud to be able to broadcast this meeting to the world because I was a member of that class. One of the first members of this class to arrive was Bobby Rawls, a very prominent tigure at the World Peace Conference nine gears ago. He has been asked by Norman Ohambliss, head of the New York Stock Exchange, to accompany 'him on a trip to the Orient on a secret mission, involving a plan to make stocks go up. Joyce Page, originator of the popular, "Date While You Wait Bureau" came in with Mavis Bunn, dietitian for the United States Army, responsible for the prime physical condition of our standing army. There's Horace Felton, who made several millions playing professional basketball. He has just endowed the Rocky Mount High School with a new swimming pool. Coming down the aisle toward the stage is the famous and popular orchestra leader, Harry Andrews, and his lovely Orchestra Wife, Blanche Walker. There's his "Blues" singer, Doris Daughtridge, who made the current song, "Bath Tub Blues", famous. On the left' we see Ben Mayo, who is at present writing an article for the well known magazine, "Democratic Digest", proving his motto that "women do prefer blondes". Oh! Ladies and gentlemen-you are in for a thrill. Just entering is Carolyn Jean Johnson, novelist, whose latest book - "How We Live Happily On Pig Feet and Turnip Greens", has stirred the nation. Escorting her is the famous author and public speaker, Jennings Mangum, His latest works are "Blue Banners" and "Triumphant Obscessionf' Hill Thor'p and his' Jive Bombers are sitting to my right. He and his group are famous as primary teachers who improve small childrens' sense of rythm with instruc- tion in the once popular folk dance--the jitterbug. Shirley Scott, a rising artist, has just designed a long paint brush for short painters. Just behind her is the famous lion trainer, Bob Currin, who came all the way from deepest Africa for this gala occasion. Later he will present his act to the class. He will soon join the John Exum, Jack Luper, and Frankie McCotter Circus which tours the world. Paul Bulluck and Jacqueline Tanner are the featured trapeze act. Now, a thrill for the ladies of the audience-just entering are the two most hand- some heartbreakers in Hollywood, Needham Carter and Howard Turner. It seems strange that the two rivals are together. Howard's latest picture is "All This and Women too". Be sure and see it. It is thought that he will receive the Academy ,Award for his perfor- mance in this film. Betty Murchison, heiress of the Pink Cucumber estate, has just received sixty million dollars from a rich uncle. She spent three million last week on a new invention. She amuses herself with a radio program. Her theme song is "How Long Will It Last?" Patsy Barber founder of "Miss Barber's Academy for Young Ladies" is talking to Clara Fenner. They seem to be very absorbed in something. Patsy must be interested in Clara's new book on etiquette called '4Joe Blow I'm Sure." George Valentine, Rocky Mount High School's present football coach, is discussing a new play with Gilbert Bullard, famous star of the Metropolitan Opera. They used to play on the same football team. Sitting in a corner with his head buried in a book, is Wiley Johnson, who has just discovered a new idea about Einstein's ,theory. Susan Thorp, bridal counselor, who writes the new syndicated column, "Dearest Darling," seems to be advising Nancy Dozier, New York model. I guess Nancy just can't decide which one to marry. . Here come a funny contraption. Oh I beg your pardon, Billy Meeks. I see you have your new walking radio invention. I hope later you'll show us how it works. Billy has been working on this ever since he studied radio under Mr. Edson. There's Joe Purvis just coming in with two lovely ladies on his arms. Joe, you know, has the largest laundry in Washington, D. CL He cleans all the clothes for the President, his Cabinet, the Senate and The House of Representatives. Let's see-who's that with him? I believe it's Veronica Longest, alias Jane Longest, cinema star, and Dot Thompson who just flew her plane back from the planet Superman, which she discovered a year ago. It's getting to be quite crowded here. People are pouring in faster. It's really a very large class. There's a famous swimmer, Nancy Gorham, who has just recently won world fame as the first woman to swim the Atlantic. Walking just behind her is Norman Vick. His beauty' shop. "Vick's Curly Shoppe" is one of the most popular in New York. My goodness! What is this coming? Dear me-Oh, I see, it's Margaret Cockrell and her kindergarden class. Why, Margaret, they've all got red hair. Who's that she has stqpped to talk to?, It's Dot Grey and Katherine House. They're both in Radio City Rockets. They have certainly done well as chorus girls. Dot has two pent houses in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jacob Alexander is here in the middle section. Jacob has broken the record for milking cows. I think he milked ten cows in five minutes, Who is that he's Waving to? Why, it's Edwin Oapps. That's queerg they used to be awful enemies. Edwin only milked seven cows in five minutes. Norma Cuthrell and Allegra Johnson are sitting over there chatting. Norma must be telling Allegra about her teaching at Duke. You know she lectures on the subject of "Why Go To Sleep?" I'll bet Allegra has plenty to tell her on that subject. She is Presi- dent of the Softie, Softie Mattress Company. There's Robert Hale and Harold Drummond. They collaborated on an idea to make the leaves grow pink and blue. Their idea proved successful. Now we see all up and down the avenue beautiful pink and blue trees. Who would have thought 10 years ago that such a thing could have happened? What's all that commotion over there? Why, it's Lou Allie King and Mamie McLemore. My goodness, why dosen't someone see what's the matter. Now I see the trouble. Lou Allie said she typed 400 words per minute. Mamie said she didn'tg she said that she typed faster than Lou Allie' ever could. I guess they'll get it straightened out after a bit. Excuse me just a moment, Ladies and Gentlemen-what?-oh yes, of course- Ladies and Gentlemen, that was G. C. Price asking me to announce that he'd lost one of his ,pet gorillas, and 'if onyone found it to please notify him. G .Ct has had hard luck lately. It seems that all the animals in his zoo are escaping. Last week he lost two giraffs. They stuck their necks out too far. Who are those three over there who keep looking at peoples' feet? They're Carson Dunning, Earl Mintz and Joe Alsbrook. They own a tremendous shoe string factory in Chicago, their motto being-"String along with us." Here come a very striking figure. Let's see-of course, that's Jean ,Williams. But what's that on her head? Oh, I forgot, Jean designs hats. There's Mrs. Lemmie Ingram, alias Annie Hartley. Who is she talking to? It's Anna Mae Hoell. Anna Mae gives advice to perplexed mothers. Annie must be having trouble with Lemmie, Jr. Mildred Read is standing over by the side door talking to Alton Johnson. Mildred gained her present position with the Foreign Police Association of New York by her ability to talk more rapily than the average foreigner. Alton founded the "You lose it- we find it" Bureau. Elizabeth ,Mangum, Hazel Holmes, and Katherine Gibson are coming toward the front of the auditorium. For the past three years they've been exploring the ruins of Japan. I'm told they've found some very valuable relics of the dead civilization. Mary Day and Katherine Knight are' just getting started. They run a large restau- rant at Grand Central Station for hungry hoboes. Their motto is "Day or Knight" we serve. Page Twenty one Ben Aycock has made millions with his new idea-if you're feeling down and out just call "The Nickle Tickle Bureau", and Ben will tell a joke for a nickle. Mrs. Clara Price, alias Kathleen Dawes, and her husband have just published it very interesting book, "How To Live On Love". llere comes sonieoncl know you've all heard about. It's Junior Hayes with his "Hayes Daredevilsn. He hurt his ankle the last time he jumped off the Empire State Building, but he made a quick recovery. Three other boys that were in this class helped him in performing his stunts, Bob Chadwick, Gene' Webb and Roscoe Wheeless, They performed forthe Rocky Mount Worlds' Fair two years ago. Millar.l Dozier flew all the way from the South Sea Islands for this gathering. He got started there in the last war-liked it so much he stayed. He has a big sugar plan- tation there. Who is that over there spraying her throat? lt's the famous concert artist, Eleen Boyd. Shc's going to entertain us later. Helen Gurganus, now known as Twinkle Toes Gurg-anus, is a well known ballet dancer. She is outstanding for her portrayal of an ostrich in the production. "Soap and Water." Just behind her is Clyde Britt, owner of the largest truck line in the nation. Clyde also owns a factory for making kiddie cars for youngsters. Earl Wooten is our next arrival. Earl has made millions with his plan for building big strong bodies. Earl harnessed some live vitamines which, when administered, have outstanding results. Just taking her seat on my left, is Jean Faircloth, North Carolina's best known poetess. I think she's had 360 volumes of poetry published this year. That's quite a record. The next 5oung lady we see is certainly well know to all of you ladies who buy the well known "Dartha Midgette"' frocks for young girls. Behind her is her best known stylist, Marguerite Ricks. Here comes a very executive looking person. It's Madelyn Knowles, editor of the New York Times. Beside her is her reporter, Billy Carter. John Hinnant, heavy weight champion of the world just came in with his manager, Marjory Sexton. I've heard a rumor that Marjory is responsible for his success. For those interested in horses, our next arrivals should prove of great interest, They are Evel5n Works and Harvey Thomas. They own a tremendous race track in Florida. It is the most beautiful track in the United States. David Spence is just coming in. David owns all the Spence theatres in North Carolina. I believe they total about two thousand, the largest being in Sharpsburg, N. C. Gertrude Millard, professor of English at the Kyser University here in Rocky Mount, is coming in with Buck Staton, present principal of Rocky Mount High School. Dot Wheeless, president of the Wheel-less Automobile factory, is seated in the left aisle with some very well known people, Neill Nelson, John Poplin, and A. J. English. Emily Greene is teaching Home Ecomomics at W. C. U. N. C. She came in with another member of W. C's. faculty, Edith Lundy. Edith teaches physical education. George Pennington has a radio program every Tuesday night over WEED. His funny jokes acquire him millions of new admirers every week. Page Tuenty Two Standing in the lobby are Billy Lawrence, Bobby Andrews and Meddie Parker. They've just made the important discovery that automobiles don't have to have a motor to run. It seems the car runs with some ,sort of implements called bobby-pins. Why there's a large group over there I almost missed. Let's see who is in it--Frances Ferguson, who is the Ambassador to Brazil, Violet Butler, who has developed a new kind of mouse trap that actually talks the mouse into giving up its life. And there's Frances Ford, too. She owns a large gold mine in Utah. Also in that group is the well known radio team, Taylor and Glover. .lack and Milton took the Lone' Ranger's place on the radio. Jack plays the part of the Lone Ranger and Milton, Tonto. Here comes the famous roller skater, Tommy Thurmond, who does his act with only one wheel on a skate. , Inez Barnette is just taking her seat. You may not have known it but these three are the trio that introduces the radio program, "Why Johnny Left Home." Margaret Smith, the' greatest lady wrestler, and Vivian Davis, who is the director of the United States Mint, are seated near the front with Tom Davis, whose factories make the "cuddly, cuddly bears" your little children play with. Hilton Davis now ownes Kelly's, a large drive-in located just on the outskirts of Rocky Mount, In walks Major Williamson, mayor of the City of Rocky Mount. Major has just laid the corner stone' for the addition to the High School which will cover the remainder of the campus. Mildred Vick, owner of the Vick's Glow Drops Company, arrived a few minutes ago with Archie Henry, demonstrator of the new Peroxide Tint. From their experience, they prepare themselves to asume the larger responsibili- ties presented by the right of self government in our nation. Both leaders and followers are developed through this system, students who may represent us in later years in a more im- portant Congress. Playing host this year to the North Caro- lina State Student Council Congress, the high school successfully entertained delegates Page Tlzirfy-Eiglzt from the other schools of the state. At this meeting, the problems of "Youth in the War" were discussed. From these talks and discus- sion groups, many beneficial ideas and plans were gathered, accomplishing the purpose of the Congress-to face the problems which confront high school students and make plans to solve them intelligently. The successful completion of this year is proof that great things can be accomplished by the students through their participation in the government of the high school. In this triad, they set forth the qualities necessary for win- ning the war and the peace to follow. By build- ing character, they are providing capable leaders for the United States in the future. "Help the Other Fellow" is the motto of the Hi-Y.This year the cl11b gave money to the Service Men's Organization booth. to pro- vide food for the men of the armed forces who come through Rocky Mount. Individually. the girls are buying War Bonds a11d Stamps to further the war effort. Many of the members roll bandages and knit for the Red Cross. This Hi-Y club strives to spread its ideals through the school, thus influencing the other girls who are not members. One side represents the physical de- velopments of the member, the other side stands for the mental and spiritual develop- ment of the girl. . The purpose expressed bythe Clulfs ritual is to "create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character." Through the varied program of the club, the girl becomes interested in different activi- ties. Although the spiritual development is stressed, social functions are given by the organization. All of this makes the members well-rounded individuals with many interests. QPQRTQ L L With a new coach this year, and only one at that, the Blackbird teams have been more than successful. The football squad, led by tri- captains, Valentine, Bullard, and Turner, met with several setbacks, but it was one of the scrappiest teams seen on the local girdiron in several years. Although the basketball team did not Page Fiflgf-Four Win all of its games, it was far from a failure. Hampered by losses and a lack of reserves, Coach Caruso had a potential winner, which was a credit to the school. The baseball squad, just beginning its season at this time, promises to be equally as impressive an agregation as the football and basketball squads. in - GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM l-'IllS'l' IIUW-liaitlu-1'iiw Wm-al.
