F edlcation As we journeyed up the Road to Education there were numerous times when, after becoming lost in a maze of studies or troubles, we have needed guidance and direction, when we have needed someone both capable and un- derstanding to take the wheel and guide us back to the right road-if ever we chanced to stray. At such times we have always been able to depend upon our faculty to generously give aid and counsel. Wliile showing us the way, our teachers have stood behind us in every activity we have undertaken, supporting us with their limitless energy, con- tinuous drive, infinite patience, and nexer-ending determination. So, for your efforts in guiding our destinies with a firm and confident hand, and molding us into successful, worthy citizens, we, the classes of 19516 and 1947, we hereby dedicate the 19116 Le Cantaloupe to you, the faculty of Rocky Iford High School. sixteen ack Seat rlvers Our Board of Education consxsts of these fue actne and promrnen rndruduals who are elected by the crtlzens of Rocky Ford and serve the Rocky lord school system loyally and unselflshly They are entrusted vslth the responslbllrty of regulating the affalrs of the schools schools whleh they hase watched grow and progress under the-lr gurdance To aceept men berslnp on the Board of Educatron IS to accept great responsrbrlrty These men serve not for money but only to ard the students 1nd lLlll1ll1lSll'ltlOl'l and lnsure their safe journey to Education ,lhlb year they haxe been vsorklng toward providing adequate housing for the married teachers settlng up a yearly budget and adyustlng educatlon al lolnexes to meet post war needs The board IS succeedmg remarkably well rn solung these major problems and achrexmg maximum educatlonal effren ency durmg a natronal emergency Phe students of Rocky Ford Hrgh School pay trrbute to our Board of Educatron who has made possible our journey along the Road to Educatron A-,,.f-l M J H Wilson Dr B Franklm Blotz Mr M E Ryan Mr K Smdlng M J M Fra er Mr H A Knapp Mrs Mabel Wxllbanks SCX LHICLH James ll Wilson Supermtenclent W1lson IS a busy exccutne vshose off1cc lb always open to s'uclents and faculty members He takes greal pmlc and pleasure lfl Hlillllg them 1n the 11ght Ll1I'CCfl0l1 on thexr journey along the road to CLlUC1l1Ol1 Hls mtergst nn both person ml anu school vudc problems has long, made hxm 1 fayorltc of those who trucl the Rocky lord H1 h bqhool hlghwx ay Mr Wllsori lb an 1LllTlIUlSll:ltOl mister of h1s art llL1LllCI' a mouldcr of charagtcr a loyu of f1ne books and nohlc thoughts a CIUZCD frank and strfuglmtlorw 1rd l-lc has gncn Ronlyy lorll High School years of loyal sc nu. If you ask her, she will tell you that in addition to be- ing the typing teacher she is also the sponsor of your Le Cantaloupe and of the junior Class. Her second year classes type the written work for the Meloneer News, and do end- less amounts of office work for the school. as well as fcr the business men and organi- zations of Rocky lford. Because of her business-like but charm- ing personality, Mrs. Sfaughter has made countless friends among both the faculty and student body. Study Hall and Library Mrs. Mabel Willbanks has the tremendous job of watch- ing the study hall six periods a day, checking and catalog- ing all new books that come into the library, and besides this, presiding as the sponsor of Library Club, managing the business end of the Meloneer News, and filling her position as Secretary to the School Board. She has worked won- ders with the school library and we appreciate every im- proxement she has made dui'- ing the past years. She has en- deavored to make both the study hall and library attrac- tive, pleasant, quiet places in which to study. Our Rocky Ford High School library con- tains a collection of the most up to date, interesting reading material that it is possible to obtain. Mrs. X5C'illbanks is well known for her efficiency, and pleasing personality. WW xg? .Q I 9 I fi il ' aw M .ojyw 'Wm AEC ,n K K if Q 1 ufmsg' gk ffl I. Q 'HWQWI , 13 -AV ffwwc 4 Q, a . Mr. Schneider also teaches seventh grade English and guidance. Still water runs deep' is an old saying that may well apply to Mr. Schneider. However. tim e spent in getting acquainted witl' this quiet. somewhat re- served person, will not go un- rewarded. livnvral S4-ion:-e Mrs. George Schneider taught senior high chemistry and biology at the beginning of the school year. Later she oegan teaching junior high gen- eral science and home econom- ics. Her energy and enthusiasm have made Mrs. Schneider a joy to know. Miss Emily Ann Hoyt, a graduate of Rocky Ford High School, took ove: the teaching duties of Mrs. Schneider during the last three months of the school year. Miss Hoyt's charming person- ality and intense interest in the activities of the Meloneers has made her an outstanding member of the faculty. -luniour High Art A vote of thanks goes to our genial art teacher. Mis Barbara glohnston. whose job it is to paint and arrange the stage settings. keep the halls cheerful with posters. and to do any general art work which must be taken care of in Rocky Ford High School. XVith the responsibility of both the art and mechanical drawing class- es. Miss johnson is kept exe tremely busy, 'UQ M ,.t,h.-N xy-ww! Home Eronomiavs The wonderful odors wafted from third floor come from Mrs. Donna Imhoff's home economics class. ln this class the girls learn methods of home cooking, home canning, and various and delicious ways of preparing food economical- ly. Mrs. lmhoff also teaches the home and family division of the life problems course. An easy manner and a friendly smile are typical of Mrs. Im- hoff, who has a gift of always remaining calm and unruffled. Eighth Grade English Attractive and striking are adjectives well applied to Miss Fern Bacon. Under her direc- tion these eighth grade stu- dents will learn to speak and write English properly. She al- so teaches first and second year Latin and Colorado his- tory. Her sunny disposition and ability to influence her stub dents toward better things will be a challenging influence to them in later life. Seven th Grade Jluth Miss Ethel Hutchison is shown here with her seventh grade mathematics class. ln this class the pupils learn simple percentages and the computation of interest on loans and mortgages. In addi- tion to her teaching duties, she has charge of the sale of bonds and stamps to the students of Rocky Ford High School. In future years her students will thank her for teaching them the value of regular savings habits. Spanish XVhile strolling along the third floor hall, you may have been pleasantly surprised to hear some catchy Spanish tunes .frifting from room 20. If this experience is a familiar one, you will know what we mean when we say that our Spanish teacher, Miss Ruth Woller, conducts one of the most in- teresting. sociable classes in school. Both her brilliant sense ot humor and her pleasant speaking and singing voice have made her popular with all who know her. -lo urnalism An unmistakable desire to accomplish things is an out- standing characteristic of Miss Daisy Curry, the quiet, scholar- ly teacher in room 23. Viyian Swedhin GARDEN 0F THE DIO0N K x On December 7, 1945, The Junior Class presented a decidedly unique three-act comedy entitled Garden of the Moon, under the able direction of Miss Ruth Lytle. The action took place in the delightful moon-lit garden of Professor Gaylord fBob Buisl. Professor Gaylord, in an effort to save the fallen romance of Carol 1Joyce Brockl and Brent lByron Blotzr, relates the story of his unsuccessful affair with Betty Lou Palmer 1Doris Cadwalladeri. The second act, beautifully portrayed in the costumes of the Gibson Girl era, tells his story. Gaylord and Betty Lou, both very much in love, plan their wedding. That day is turned into a day of despair as Betty Lou's father tCharles Hammilll, intervenes just as the ceremony is about t-o begin, and takes the unhappy bride away to con- tinue with her vocal career. Soon after she marries an- other man. Professor Gaylord urges Carol and Brent to consider the situation carefully before making any rash decisions. Finally Leo Saunders 4John Clayl, the other man, steps gracefully out of the picture as Carol explains that she doesnt want to be unhappy as her mother has been. After the young people leave for the college prom, Betty Lou, actually Mr. Clair, Carol's mother comes to Gaylord and confesses that she him through the years. loves him and has always loved The play was enlivened throughout by frequent bits of humor from Kitty, the maid tJackie Hamiltonm, Pro- fessor Maxim lliex Poulignotl, and the boys quartette. At the end of each performance a silver offering is taken. This money is used to improve the stage, or to pay for other necessities in the dramatics department. Pictured here is a play in pro- duction and one in rehearsal. The first picture is a scene taken from Sanitorium one of the productions used this year. The action takes place in an insane asylum where Miss Dickson, Betty Johannes, has gone to study. When the doc- tor, Bill McBride, begins act- ing strangely and introduces as nurses Helen, Marjorie Ro- lander, a ratty-haired, flower crowned woman who carries a lantern and dresses in an old- fashioned white dress, and Miss Miller, Phyllis Watters, a military lady who wears a steel helmet and a row of med- als on her chest, Miss Dickson finally realizes the truth, that the inmates have taken over the hospital. She is at last rescued from near death at the hands of the insane doctor and nurses, by the true head nurse, Mary Richards. A rehearsal scene fro m Will-O-The-Wisp is the third picture shown here as Leatrice Guest prepares to strangle Willa Mae Long. The maid, jackie Hamilton, can do nothing but watch the attempt- ed murder. This year, the dramatic department created its own Christmas Pageant from The juggler of Our Lary, made famous in America, by john Nesbitt. Senior Class History In the fall of 1940 mounted on our tricycles we the class of 1946 peddled into Rocky Ford High School as terrified eringing bits of msignrtr cant humanity We seyenth graders starting on our journey down the road to high school educa tion were amazed at our upperclassmen s apparent sophistication and undoubtedly were the greenest small fries ever to pass through the portals of dear old R F H S As we oozed into the posr tion of eight graders we were just beginning to grow out of our gawky meekness and had learned the hard way that you take your life into your own hands when you travel down the halls ot our school After two years apprenticeship as junior high students we entered school as full fledged high school freshmen and transferred to bicycles We picked our own classes used lockers helped save the tomato crop and took part in senior high activities with all the zest of typical frosh Thar We started out thinking we owned the place and ended up by knowing we didnt In 1943 we swarmed to school as sophomores under the leadership of Glenn Yeater begging rides occasionally from the car ownmg upper classmen Mr Alden McKinley Mrs Lois Kelly and Mrs Donna Mae Imhoff were baffled as to what we would do next You see by now we felt sure we were intelligent worldly wise and adult To put it bluntly we were the B g Dogs We thoughtj That was the year we took a patriotic spree and challenged the rest of the school in war stamp sales During the forth war loan drlye vue came out first by purshasing a total of 35 556 55 worth of bonds and stamps Our class picnic that year one of those gay sand in your eyes affairs held at Holbrook Lake was a huge success In September 1944 we embarked upon one of the busiest years in our history with Eddie One hundred twenty six bobin at the wheel By then some ol us were driving our own cars Being extremely mercen ary we hterally dragged in the money We be gan by sponsoring the first dance of the school year and adding to our treasury 850 O0 Our junior play Tiger House an overwhelming suc cess packed in one of the largest crowds ever assembled in the high school auditorium The proceeds gathered from our unusually profitable junior class coke and candy stand added to that made on our various other money making ventures combined to make our unique Old Dutch Gar den prom one of the biggest social successes of the year Our junior class picnic held at Aprchapa Dam was a memorable affairs In spite of the fact that half the class felt the need for their yearly bath causing a shght discoloration of the river water and although the sponsors Mrs Olive Slaughter and Mr C F McKee felt like modern Balboas when they finally discovered the location of the dam after searching over half Otero county Last but by no means least came our senior year the triumph of our high school career Again money mad we were lead by Eddie Gobxn to financial and social fame We originated the cour tesy award given to the student voted most cour teous for the week Our class play Come Rain or Shine was again a huge success as well as our sneak day and Easter breakfast This year has been a maze of work and worry as well as crazy exciting mischievous exents which go to make a memorable history Miss Ruth Lytle and Mrs Elnora Schmitt have kindly guided us on our way to graduation And so as we the drgnifldied seniors finally come to the end of our journey we recall the many delightful incidents of these past years which have been the milestones in our high school tlreers It is these milesstones that will remain with and influence us as we go out onto the road of lrfe W Q Q 1 ' - ' ' 1 I ' I ' .
