THE WASHINGTON TRIP Early but not very bright on a Sunday morning thirty seven Seniors Mr and Mrs D1 Renzo and Mr Barnard chmbed aboard 1 Boston bound bus Arriving at South Station about noon we had an hour for snacks and short excursions By Ne w Haven Rfulroad we arrived at Grand Cen tral Station in New York City at 5 30 0 clock We spent an hour there in the Sta tion and discovered that It zs possible to get lonesome there and then we checked in at the Hotel Taft for the night Who could forget that first night in New York Monday morning at eight thirty we crossed the Hudson by ferry to Jersey City from here we went to Baltimore via B 8x O into Baltimore and we lost no time in feeding our famished faces at the Straf ford Hotel After our meal we drove to Annapolis to tour the U S Naval Acad emy everyone found the Academy inter esting especially the girls' At last we reached our ultimate d9Stl nation Washington D C' It was six oclock when we entered the Lafayette Hotel and aside from feellngalittle tired we were happy and more excited than ever The evening was free and we all spent a wonderful night on the town Some of us got to hear Ella Fitzgerald and others discovered 1 cool little all Negro combo that s really going places Tuesday morning we began our tour of the City the Washington Monument the Smithsonian Institute Arlington National Cemetery the Tomb of the Unknown Sol dier the Custis Lee Mansion and Mount Vernon After dark we saw the Jeffei son and Lincoln Memorials and the Llbrary of Congress The hours remaining before midnight were ours for recreation or re cuperation Our tour contmued on Wednesday with visits to the Bureau of Printing and En gravlng the Pan American Union the Supreme Court and the Capitol Building In the afternoon we drove to the Francis can Monastery and the National Ep1sco pal Church Our evening again was free By B Sz O we left the Capital on Thurs day morning after lunch on the train we got into New York about one o clock We spent the free afternoon either resting in our rooms at the Taft shopping for neck ties and trench coats or seeing the sights along Broadway and Flfth Avenue Our our evening s entertainment was a tour of Radio City and a show at the Music Hall there On Friday morning we were left to our own devices so we took advantage of every single minute on the fabulous island of Manhattan A group of the boys even got to take a tugboat ride around the Hudson and East Rivers Our afternoon tour took us through uptown New York and the NB C Television studios and to dlnner at th+ Down Under Restaurant in Radio City We left the B1g C1ty at midnlght and arrived in the Hub at seven 0 clock Satur day morning It was twelve thirty when crumpled dizzy and too pooped to parti cipate we pulled 1nt0 Rockland and breathed the 1nv1gorat1ng salt air once again None of us will ever forget the Wash lngton Trip of 1956 in fact with the slightest provocation we would all be wil Img to head back this very minute' Sheila Brackett I . 5 .' , u , Q .
