With a high school education completed, graduates receive a diploma. Through the senior year, however, several members of the class are honored and recognized for achievement. High test scores, records of leadership, election results, superior grades, extra study, and special interests are variousqualifications for different awards. As public education is ended, graduates look toward the future more than ever. Col- leges, occupations, technical training schools, and the armed services will be chosen fields. The purpose of education is to prepare the student for the world in which he lives. High school is a time of beginnings. Larry Conant and Jack Peters, who received appointments to the Air Force Academy and Merchant Marine Academy, respectively, show their letters to Diane Carlberg, Westinghouse Science Talent Search finalist, and Sam Stonefield, East's representative to the Illinois Student Senate.
