Harriers near perfect As most valuable runner for the Rocks, sophomore Tony VanDeWalle led all Rocky runners in most meets Hard work and determination paid off for Eric Nunn as he crosses the finish line in first place. The Rock Island Cross Country Team completed a very successful season with a sparkling 8-1 dual meet record. Led by sophomore ace Tony VanDeWalle, the Rocks placed high in every meet including a team championship ih the Clinton Classic. The future looks awfully good to Head Coach John Coolidge as the Frosh-Soph Team was perfect with a 10-0 record and a fifth consecutive conference title. Girl swimmers make splashes The 1980-81 girls swimming and diving team made fdntastic improvement this year The team was lead by senior Co-cdptains Deanna Robinson and Julie Hynd. Sr. Jean Gilliam was voted most valuable swim¬ mer. Missy McKee broke the 500 yd. freestyle record and swam the lead-off leg on the Medley Relay team which included Laurie Wakeland, Jean Gilliam and Julie Hynd which also set a new school record. The team finished the season with 6 wins and 7 losses in dual meets, placed second in the Western Big 6 and 6th at the District meet where Missy McKee was crowned the 100 backstroke champion and set a new district record of 103.68. The former record was held by Rocky ' s State Cham¬ pion Annette Ackerson. At the State meet, freshman Missy McKee just missed making the top 12 by placing 13th. Next year ' s outlook is very bright.
