Rocks Capture First The 1973 track season was an excellent one with Rocky capturing 1st in the Guilford Invita¬ tional, the Big Six, Conference and District; 2nd in the Clinton Gateway, the Davenport Relays and the Quad-City Conference; 3rd in the Quad City Indoor and 6th in the Moline Invitational. They started badly in the dual meets, losing their first meet to Davenport Central but won every meet after that. Outstanding returning lettermen for the 1974 season are: Mark Steven¬ son, Ron Jett, Dan Clash, Jeff Hindman, Willie Jones, Bart Bonsall, Francis Jones, Terry Rosen¬ thal, Herman Hall. The Cross Country Team did not do quite as well as the track team in 1973, winning 3 and los¬ ing 5 in dual meets. They took 4th in both the Big Six Conference and District, 8th in the Quad City Conference, 7th in the Geneseo Invitational and 17th in the Ottawa Invitational. The top 3 cross-country runners were, in order, Francis Jones, Craig Demry, and Bob Guthrie. 1. Coach Duane Donsall. 2. Jeff Hindman races on to victory. 3. Wrestling Team Has Winning Season The Rock Island Wrestling team compiled an overall record of 12-5. Freshman headcoach Walt Gerber ' s “Rassling” Rock Army not only established a re¬ spectable dual meet record but captured fifth place in the six¬ teen team Palentine Tourna¬ ment and a third place finish among the eight teams at the Davenport Invitational. Coach Gerber lists his best varsity wres¬ tlers as Tim Golden (105), Louis Wells (112), Dirk Palmer (132), Andy Rich (138), and Wayne Each (145). For Coach Tom Goodwin, Out¬ standing Junior Varsity Wres¬ tlers were Buddy Hay, Don Wil¬ liams, Dave Wayne, Dave Hodge and Steve Layer. The Sophomores with Coach Sellers also enjoyed a good sea¬ son this year. In the Big Six Con¬ ference Jerry Freelove (119), Denis Copenhaver (138), Steve Goodwin (132), and Bob Taylor (HWT) each took 1st in his weight while Steve Green took a 2nd at 167 and Bob Kapraun took 3rd at 155. Robert Taylor and Bob Kapraun were both Panther Sophomore Tourney Champs. With a sophomore team like this we can expect a fine squad for years to come. 1.
