Girls Take 2nd in State Under the head supervision of Coach Track- well the 7972 Rock Island Girls Tennis Team glided through another successful season, de¬ feating all their opposition. The Girl ' s team highlighted a most successful campaign by copping the second spot in the first State Tournament for Girls. In doing this, the Rocks qualified a total of six members for State competition. Two of the qualifiers, Pam Zwer and Carol Foss became the State ' s Double Champs and were named along with the rest of the squad by the Davenport Times-Democrat as " Prep of the Week " . The sophomore tennis squad is made up of; ROW 1: Kathy Varadi, Toni Bra - ner, Carol Gainous, and Joy Shannon ; ROW 2: Darcy Birkel, Mary Pierce, Nancy Motz, Sharon Bevill, and Karen Bealer. picture 2. Squads Promote Spirit Five sophomores, five juniors, five seniors; fif¬ teen girls, all chosen for one purpose — pro¬ moting spirit. Three squads, each acting as Rocky ' s spiritual guides, cartwheeling, backflip¬ ping, and somersaulting in enthusiasm for Rock Island ' s athletic teams. Five sophomores, elected to promote " Little Rock " spirit. Introduced to new cheers, new ideas and new enthusiasm. Finally teaching their balcony friends how to shout during " pep yell " . Five juniors, practicing hard to boost the wrestlers and swimmers to a victorious season. Five seniors, backed by the supreme class, never ceasing to find new ways of making spirit. Accelerating enthusiasm through skits, signs and cupcakes. Bringing home the Spirit Stick in hopes of igniting it throughout the school. Five seniors saying " do it, do it " . Picture 1.
