The Rocks were led by seniors Kenn Shoemaker and Mark Greenleaf, while most of the remaining strength was held in the sophomores. The team began its season by placing fourth out of eight teams in the Rock Island Relays. They then went on to top Clinton, Macomb Western and Assumption with easy victories. The sophomores captured the Quad- City Sophomore title, rolling up 105 points to second place Central ' s 53. Kenn Shoe¬ maker traveled to state in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, while the 400 yard free relay team of Shoemaker, Craig Kirkpatrick, Dave Andrews and Vince Ackerson also went to state. Ackerson became the first freshman to compete in the state swim meet in Rocky ' s history. Coach Friedreichsen ' s second year as coach proved rewarding, as his team grew to be a most powerful one. Rocks Fall to a Defeated Season The varsity basketball squad under the guidance of Coach Bob Riley compiled a 5-16 season record. The Rock ' s cagers faced one of the toughest schedules in the state. Most games were played against top ranked teams. The Rocks were un¬ derdogs coming into almost every game, but it never seemed to bother them. The opening game of the season was a loss to Assumption. The Knights out- scored Rock Island by twenty points in t he first period, putting the game out of reach, the remainder of the game was played evenly. The next game was an easy 84-65 victory over Rockford Auburn. The following week. Rocky played a good game against East Moline, but the Panthers slipped by with a five point advantage. The highlight of the season came when the Rocks upset Quincy 73-70. After that sweet taste of victory, the Rocks chal¬ lenged Davenport West. Rocky led much of the game until the last seven seconds, when Steve Saladino scored, putting West one point ahead. The following four games were losses to some very strong ball clubs. The Rocks then hosted Davenport Central and Assumption and were victorious over both. The 1971-72 year was head coach Bob Riley ' s last; he resigned following at the end of regular season play after 16 years as varsity coach for the Rocks.
