Pebble Gridders Have Perfect Season Achieve First Sophomore 9-0 Record This year ' s 1971 sophomore football team ended its season with a perfect 9 wins - 0 losses record. The only other time that this outstanding feat has been accomplished was in 1942. Even then the Little Rocks played only 8 games. The sophomore ' s perfect record is attributed to the great efforts and quali¬ ties of head coach John Benn, his assist¬ ants, and the determination and will¬ power that the Pebbles carried through¬ out their season. The Little Rocks opened their season by clenching Alleman 27-0, and win¬ ning the city title. They then went on to beat Moline and Assumption, giving only Moline a chance to score. The Pebbles traveled to Galesburg and easi¬ ly defeated them with a score of 28-0. They then smothered Davenport West and East Moline, carrying 7 touch¬ downs each game. They left Central scoreless and romped Rockford West, 20-6. The sophomores victoriously closed their season 28-6 over Quincy. ROW I: Dan Clash, John Medlock, Perry Scott, Richard Ellis. Rocks Take District Title The returning Rock Island wrestling veterans Mike Bough- an, Jerry Vesey, Greg Moroni, Robert Hill and John McDuffy were the backbone to Chet Schuktz’s fine varsity ‘Tassling” squad. Vesey and Hill both snatched firsts in the Quadrangular tournament, while Rock Island placed third. Coach Gerber ' s sophomore team traveled to Galesburg and grabbed first place in the Sophomore Western Big Six tournament. The Rocks placed first out of twelve teams that participated in the District tournament which was held at East Moline, and proudly earned their first big step to state. Although the Rocks began a new season building back much of the strength lost to last year’s senior wrestlers, determination and willpower helped this year’s squad achieve their victories.
