Second Row: Coach Sheldon Weiner, Mike Skafidas, Tom Manson, John Chappell, Tom Myers, Doug Martin, Guy Stevenson, Steve Greve, Dave Strauss, and Head Coach Robert Motz. Rocky Natters Shut Out All ' 70 Opposition The R. I. tennis squad continued trudging away at its undefeated season last spring and this fall. Last spring the team enjoyed a 16—0 record in dual meets and were also Quad City Conference Champs, West¬ ern Big 6 champs, R. I. Invitational cham¬ pions. Steve Briggs and Dick Mainline combined to be state doubles semi-final¬ ists. Major letter winners last spring included Steve Briggs, Dick Mainline, Bob Muffman, Steve Brown, Scott Reid, Larry Barker, Don Mentrich, Pat Ryan and Mark McKissick. This fall the netters added 6 more to dual meets and won the Quad City Conference. This team now has set 2 high school re¬ cords, winning all Quad City dual meets by shut outs and winning all six singles and all three doubles divisions in the Quad City tournament. Rocky finished its 1970 re- cord-setting season under Mead Coach Bob Motz and Coach Shelly Weiner. Next year looks promising for the Rocks with upcoming talent returning. Making up the varsity squad are Bill Myers, Keith Abel, Steve Brown, Steve Briggs, Coach Bob Motz, Dick Hainline, Scott Reid, and Quentin Gamelin.

Golfers Clinch Two Titles With the formation of the new Quad-City Metro Conference, Rock Island immedi¬ ately showed its power by winning the Spring season of 1970 and the Fall season of 1970. In the Spring season, there were four new records set for Rock Island golfers. They were: a 40 on the back nine at Highland Springs by Marty Davis against Galesburg, a 36 on the front nine at Mill Creek by Ted Stone against Central, an outstanding two- under par 34 by Doug Elliott at Duck Creek against Central, and a 74 at the Big Six Tournament at Quincy ' s Westview by Doug Elliott. Doug Elliott also led the team in average with 40.81. In the Fall season, three new scores were written Into the annals. Marty Davis and Reed Carlson scored 38 ' s on the difficult front nine at Short Hills, Tom Blakely made a one-under par 35 at Credit Island, and 38 ' s on the back nine at Mill Creek by Ted Stone and Reed Carlson. Dave Wood, the Golf coach, had trained by the end of the 1970 season a team of champions. The Rocky Golf squad took both conference titles, but placed 4th at District.

Female Racketeers Rack Up W —0 Season Miss Emma Trackwell coached the girls ' tennis team to a perfect 10—0 season this fall. With a 5A —6 individual record, the girls coasted to the Quad-City Metro-Conference title. Jean Coberly earned the number one rank in the girls ' singles division. The first seven squad members in order are jean Coberly, Susie Briggs, Deb Wisely, Marti Zukerman, Margie Dew, Pam Zwer, and Debbie Chappell, jean Coberly and Deb Wisely made up the number one doubles team; Susie Briggs and Margie Dew number two; and the third team consisted of Marti Zukerman and Debbie Chappell. Out of the ten team members, eight are underclassmen, making the future look as bright as the past. The championship tennis team is FfRSTROW: Debbie Chappell, Jean Coberly, Deb Wisely, Pam Zwer, and Marti Zukerman. SECOND ROW: Susie Briggs, Kathy Lincoln, Margie Dew, Debbie Darr, Carla Slivken, and Mary Huffman. 106 Miss Emma Trackwell coaches her second successful season.
