Rocks Fare Well Against Tough Competition The 1970 spring track season proved to be a real challenge. The varsity team, coached by Duane Bonsall, compiled 4 win$ and 3 losses by the end of the season. Basically the strength lie in the sprints and field events. Robert Taylor led the dashmen, while the pole vault spear-headed the win¬ ning talents in the field events backed up closely with the shot put. Jerry Carpenter was chosen team captain. Special awards were also given to Robert Taylor, the most points; Larry Williamson, the most im¬ proved; and Frank Frances, the most valua¬ ble senior. Rock island 120 Dav. R.l. Turns in Successful 5 —5 Record The Rock Island baseball squad finished 8—11 for the season with a 5—5 Metro-Conference record. Finishing third in the Metro-conference, the team boasted Rick Bevans as its captain and most valuable player. Jack Pagett gave the team a boost as the top area catcher and Bruce Walker proving invaluable as a hitter. The Rock Island team tied with East Moline for the third place honors. Carl Aronson and Jim Seeley lead the team as coaches. Mike Patrick looks forward to spring practice. Returning lettermen, John Johnson and Barry Barnes, anticipate a winning season.
