First place in the state was within reach, but Ronel Muskeyvalley lost in an overtime with one state champion and John Angel lost by a referee penalty to another state champion. Coach John Benn and his assistants Hugh Johnson, Dick Allison, and Sam McCann brought the Rock Island Pebbles football squad to a 1970 season record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The sophomores started the season off right. A 20—14 win over Rockford West predicted a winning season. The next week the little Rocks were slowed down by Moline with an 8—8 tie. Still undefeated, the Pebbles went after Assumption. Smashing the Little Knights 33—12 kept Rocky spirits up for a 16—3 victory over Alleman. The underclassmen ' s machine ran smoothly for yet another game as Davenport West fell under Rock Island pressure for a 14—8 final tally. As all good things must end, so did the Pebbles ' undefeated season. In the next two consecutive games they were beaten by East Moline 12—6 and Davenport Central 25—8. The following week the Pebbles clashed with Clinton racking up 29 points to their opponents ' 8. The final game of the 1970 season was played against Quincy. The little Rocks finished with a flourish netting 40 points to shut out Quincy ' s sophomore squad. The underclassmen ' s co-captains for 1970 were John Holman and Robert Hill. This year the Rock Island Pebbles football team finished with winning season. John Benn ' s third year as head coach was a successful one rearing skilled and experienced material for the varsity Rocks. The 1970 6—2—1 record is a culmination of a year of hard work, knowledgeable coaching and all the determination of a Rock Island team.
