Wrestlers struggle for victory at state Rock Island matmen relied on a junior dominated squad for the 69-70 season. Rick Benz was named most valuable team member. Senior Rick Bevans and Rick Gibson were honored as co-captains. Ron Banks and Rick Benz held the lead for team points. Banks was first with 82 and Benz second with 76. Rick Bevans was third with 75. Rick led the team in takedowns with 16 and also boasted 13 escapes. This season there were 106 teams entered in the state wrestling tournament. 61 of the teams had one wrestler representing its school, 23 had two, and 22 had three or more men. Benz, Bevans, and Gibson represented Rock Island. Mike Bougham became the first freshman ever to receive a major letter. Rock Island completed its season with a 5—8 won-lost record in dual meets and 2—4 in the Quad City Metro Conference. The Rocks placed third in the Quadrangular, fifth in the Davenport Invitational, second in the Western Big Six and Illinois Sectional at Dixon and received three points at the state finals in Normal. The 1969-70 Rocky tankers ended a successful season with 11 wins and 4 losses. In championship meets, the Dolphins held high honors. Rocky captured first in the Metropolitan Conference, sec¬ ond in District, and fourth at State. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Scott Boxman, Keith Gilliam, Jon Duvejonc, and Bob Lohmeier won All American honors and broke the existing state record by .5 seconds, but came in third as both Hinsdale Central and Thornbridge beat the four in finals. Jeff Kolinchinsky, Keith Gilliam, Bob Lohmeier, and Scott Box- man made up the All American medley relay team. The All Amer¬ ican swimmers were among the top twenty swimmers, time wise, in the entire country. More than 2,000 high school teams in the country participated. This season alone, 15 individual performances were mentioned for All American. Junior Keith Gilliam led the way with eight different qualifications. In his last year of coaching, Gary Ackerson led the swim team to many victories. Mr. Ackerson has valued sportsmanship throughout his years at Rocky. He has never had a losing year. R.l.
