Little Rocks end season with 6 — 2—7 record FIRST ROW: Lorenzo Nesbitt, Larry Fulton, Dan Zelino, Brent Allison, Mike Hartman, Orlando Edgerson, Delano Thorton, John Chaney, Eric Gahn, Mike Polito, Steve Lewis, Harry Veasy, Robert Taylor. SECOND ROW: Trainer Richard Hatlett, Mike Mitchell, Dan Applequist, Don Patterson, Robert Anderson, Jack Miskowicz, Terry Ott, Mark Franck, Robert Williams, Gary Berg, John McDufty, Steve Pauley, Leroy Guthrie, Perry Bradley, Greg Moroni, Jay Archibald. THIRD ROW: Mr. Oscar Larson, Mr. Tom Schmulbach, Mr. Hugh Johnson, Toby Bevill, Mike Thomas, Curtis Patterson, Alan Andich, Steve Wilker, Lorenzo Turner, John Sherwin, Chuck Heggen, Rick Tacey, Clift Waggoner, Mr. Sam McCann, Mr. Dick Allison, and Mr. John Benn. The Rock Island Pebbles football squad, under the direction of Head Coach John Benn and his assistants, Hugh Johnson, Dick Allison and Sam McCann, compiled a record of 6 wins, 2 losses and one tie for the 1969 season. The Little Rocks started their campaign off on a losing note. The sophomores were beaten by Rockford West 14—0 on September 13. The following four weeks, the Pebbles racked up decisive wins over Moline, Assumption, Alleman and Davenport West. The following week, however, the underclassmen were com¬ pletely outplayed by East Moline as the Little Panthers won by a 40—12 count. After beating Davenport Central 28—14, the Pebbles had a rematch with the Panthers. This time however, the East Moliners had to score in the waning minutes to salvage a 22—22 tie with the Rocks. The Little Rocks ended their season with a 26—8 victory at Clinton. Leading ground gainer for the Pebbles was Robert Williams with an average of 8.3 yards per carry. Netmen swing first in district competition Representing the boys ' tennis team are: FIRST ROW: Keith Abel, Mike Skafidas, Scott Reid, Steve Brown, David Brown, David Strauss, and Manager John Gunther. SECOND ROW: Doug Martin, Quinten Gamelin, Bob Huffman, Dick Hainline, Don Sahlstrom, Jeff Martin, Don Hentrichs. THIRD ROW: Coach Shelly Weiner, Dan Henry, Pat Ryan, Bill Meyers, Mark McKissick, Steve Briggs, Dean Dick, Bob Adams, Larry Barker, Jeff Dorman, and Coach Bob Motz. Head Coach Motz coached his team to capture Quad City Conference title for the twelfth consecutive year. In spring tennis the Rocks took first in District and fourth in State. Steve Briggs completed his spring season with a 62—2 record. Dear- mond Briggs, captain and three year letter winner, teamed up with Steve Briggs and victoriously won 59 matches and lost only two. Both Steve and Dearmond were state semifinalists. Fall season Bob Huffman and Dick Hainline earned second in city doubles. Steve Briggs captured first in singles in the fall tournament. Undefeated players were Steve Briggs, Dick Hainline, and Scott Reid. The Rocks finished the sea¬ son with 17 wins and 2 losses. 102
