Algebra Geometry Geometry Trig., Adv. Algebra Chemistry JOAN DAVID WOOD WERTHMANN College Algebra- Soph. Adv. Algebra, Trig. Algebra I Highlighting the Math De¬ partment this year was new head Mr. L. Anderson who taught advanced algebra and calculus. Also new to the de¬ partment was Mr. Wood. The classes offered to the 1009 students who took math this year were algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonom¬ etry, and calculus. This year ' s math library ad¬ ded several new books includ¬ ing textbooks for the geometry classes and for the juniors who were enrolled in the advanced placement group. Mr. Ryner explicates the theories of functions and limits. 62

TED DICKERSON American History GARY EMBRETSON American History HOLLIS HEGG Government JERRY JANECKE Government Ranging from the Civil War to inflation, classes of the So¬ cial Studies Department dealt with a wide variety of subjects. The different courses offered were world history, American history, geography, econom¬ ics, and American government. In all of their classes audio and visual aids were used to enhance the students ' aware¬ ness. The 1968 Election sparked government classes. This year in all of the eco¬ nomic classes a new textbook was used. The purpose of this curricula was to get the student to devise his own conclusions by working with individual re¬ search. jOHN BLOMBERC MARCIA Spanish II, IV, V ANDERSON French I, II; German I MARIJANE BOWMAN German I, II, III KAREN HABERTHUR American History; Latin 1,11,111, IV CAROLINE SEARS Spanish I, II World shrinks as language department grows JOYCE SHOLL CLARA TSACARIS French II, III, IV Spanish II, III Teachers of the Language Department looked for dedi¬ cated students in which they could inculcate an apprecia¬ tion of another culture. With the aid of a new listen¬ ing center for fourteen stu¬ dents, tape recorders, and a language lab students learned to speak in a different tongue as well as interpret. Reading foreign literature, participating in group discussion, and writ¬ ing essays also helped students in this practice. Movies and slide projectors helped with the cultural aspect of the course. The curriculum included courses in German, Spanish, Latin, and French. Miss Anderson manipulates controls as her class recites. 63
