Superintendent of Public Schools, Charles O. Austin, examines one of the many important papers which pass through his hands during the day. Virgil Helms plays a big role in manag ing the public schools. Superintendent and school board act as team Working behind the scene in Rock Island School District No. 41 were the five members of the Rock Island Board of Education. The duties of the School Board covered all of the different aspects of education. Responsibilities ranged from arranging curriculum and set¬ ting policies to buying land sites for future school build¬ ings and hiring personnel. School Board members also worked with teachers ' salaries and provision of funds for various school programs. Working with the School Board in administering the school operations were the Superintendent of Schools and his two assistants. Principal and assistant head Rocky faculty Managing a school as large as Rock Island High is a mam¬ moth task. It required the ad¬ ministrative teamwork of two men, the Principal, Mr. F. W. Aspedon, and the Assistant Principal, Mr. Edward Evans who concentrated on the criti¬ cal and unpopular job of disci¬ plinary management. This in¬ cluded compiling a student ' s behavior record and assigning all detentions. Mr. Aspedon, however, had a more varied task. He had charge of every¬ thing at Rocky from approving excuses, to compiling indi¬ vidual student schedules, to making morning WATCH- TOWER announcements.
