In his second year as head coach, Gary Embretson guided a well- knit ball club to the best rec¬ ord compiled by a Rocky squad in several years. The first game saw the Rocks come from behind to upset the perennial power¬ house, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, in the final quarter, 21—7. Sparked by the running of Ken Johnson and two touch¬ down passes from Drake De- Vore to Rick Miers the grid- ders began the season in a triumphant way. Davenport West was the Rocks ' next vie- key to Rocky tim, as the squad displayed a tremendous rushing attack of 367 yards. The team exploded in the first quarter for 27 points, including a touchdown ramble by defenseman Walt Stradley and three other t-d sprints consuming only five plays from scrimmage. The final score was 41—13. The following week Rock Island

Homecoming spirit at two schools slowed Rocky consid¬ erably as a tilt at Clinton saw the River Kings trim the Rocks, 12—0, and at another contest in East Moline, the Varsity barely squeezed by, 14—13. In the next game, the Rocks rumpled rival Moline. With a score of 33—20, the battle was primarily an offen¬ sive show with Harvey Chaney and Lew Miskowicz and Steve Arnold ' s fine performances. The Islanders were headed off the next week by Davenport Central, 25—7, and again by Washington of Cedar Rapids, 47—7, before a Rock Island Homecoming crowd. The grid- ders closed the season by trouncing Iowa City, 20—4. Highly successful, Rocky was led offensively by fullback Ken Johnson and defensively by end Walt Stradley. 193
