Showing journalistic talents, these honorary journalism students make up the Quill and Scroll. They are, FRONT ROW, Laurie Anderson, Patti Jo Soderberg, Jackie Freshwaters, Cindy Jones, Carol Goldstein, and Marilyn Fields. SECOND ROW, Mickey O ' Melia, Monica Pealstrom, Danny Harris, Helane Golden, and Dave Johnston. Young journalists merit literary honors Monica Pealstrom, Laurie Anderson, and Jackie Freshwaters playfully tackle the beginning of what seems to be—a snow man? Sounds of energetic voices, hurried footsteps, and clat¬ tering typewriters meant that you were within distance of a devoted member of the Quill and Scroll. Members of this honorary journalism society were chosen on the basis of the fulfillment of the national and school requirements. Students had to be in the up¬ per one third of their senior class, and they had to have the approval of their advisor and the Society ' s Executive Sec¬ retary. Honorees had to be on the staff of the WATCH- TOWER and the paper.

Key Club opens doors to service at RIHS Key Club members are, KNEELING, Dave Johnston, Lew Miskowicz, Dan Murphy, Al Nelson, John Robison, and Arthur Breck. STANDING, Bruce Hamming, Larry Cline, Duane Taylor, Mickey O ' Melia, Craig Bolt, Ted Larson, Melvin Crimes, Larry Barker, Doug Elliott, Tim Curry, Ted Stone, Don Hentrich, Terry Mitchell, Cary Creenleaf, Joe Ullman, and David Cibberman. BACK ROW, Scott Schade, Walt Stradley, Rick Miers, Drew Newton, Mark Brooks, Ken Enstrom, Howard Waxenberg, Kevin O ' Hern, Frank Thomas, John Borden, Tony Canny, Larry Begyn, David Hanson, DeArmond Briggs, Jerry Carstens, Jon Duyvejonck, Steve Buller, Bob Martensen, Mike Gordon, Jack Salstrom, Brad Appier. Civic-minded Key Club officers, Walter Stradley, Steve Buller, John Borden, and Mike Cordon, prepare to serve the community. Key Club, sponsored by the Rock Island Kiwanis Club, was the largest service club for boys at Rocky. They have a maximum of fifty members. These service-minded stu¬ dents led the soap drive for inmates at Dixon State Hos¬ pital. Geared to foster school enthusiasm, Key Club com¬ pleted the case for the spirit bulletin board this year. At home football games, club members sold programs and booster buttons. This club set the standards for which boys at Rocky strove in behalf of the school. 178
