Science Council members listen intently to a thorough explanation given by the president David Garber. Concessions, picnic spark Science Council Jerry Carstens explains that the voltameter is a very useful instrument. The Science Council of Rock Island High School in¬ cluded all of the members of the Camera Club and of the Science and Electronics Club. They met monthly and the combination worked advan¬ tageously for both groups. At these periodic functions. Science Council members used equipment ranging from a giant star-gazing telescope, and powerful ham radio, to an electric generator. When members weren ' t studying the use of this equipment, they were usually learning how to pop popcorn for all Rocky ' s concession stands. The Coun¬ cil members had to be careful, however-no test tubes could be found in the popcorn! 161

Science and Electronics form Radio Club Elements of the Science and Electronics Club, John Kittler, Ted Stone, Dale Enburg, Craig Sandusky, Larry Thomas, Debbie Stone, Carita Stevens, and SEATED, Steve Buller, and Jerry Carstens, hold periodic meetings. A new club came to Rocky under the auspices of an old one this year. The new Radio Club fused minds with the old Science and Electronics Club. The goal of the members is to obtain their ham radio li¬ censes because this year both clubs had ham radio equip¬ ment available to use. They also had all of the rest of Rocky ' s new sophisticated scientific apparatus available, augmented by field trips, films, and lectures yearlong. 160 Craig Sandusky performs experiments with complex electronics equipment.

Leading the Dolphinettes through their water escapades are officers: Debbie Fenton, president; Jeanne Kalish, vice- president; Jean Carlson, secretary; Becky Lawhorn, treasurer. Annual performance exhibits One had to do more than float to have been good enough to warrant member¬ ship in the Dolphinettes. To be included in this group one needed, as the name implies, grace along with excellent swimming ability. The Dolph¬ inettes practiced their water ballet diligently to attain syn¬ chronization. The highlight of the year was their annual swim show held in the spring. The theme of this year ' s pres¬ entation was titled " Synchro- Swing. " The three-night per¬ formance required much re¬ hearsal and preparation, and the girls were rewarded for their effort at a cast party. The ballet leg challenges swimmers to many hours of concentrated effort. 162
