Board of Education MEMBERS OF THE Board of Education who are elected to solve the problems of Rock Island’s school system are SITTING: William Bell. Mrs. Carol Kimmel. STANDING: Fred Patton. Maxwell G. Larson. Ted Arnold. WILLIAM BELL, PRESIDENT, leads a discussion on the .rious problems of the school system. 36 The Rock Island Board of Education performs many services which benefit the students of Rock Island High School. The Board, headed by William Bell, hires new personnel, decides on policies concerning the school system, org anizes the curriculum and provides funds for the various progres¬ sive educational functions. The Board took under careful consideration the purchasing of equipment for the hig h school’s new wing. Vapor lig hts were boug ht for the exterior of the modern addition. Mrs. Kimmel and Mr. Patton are on the salary committee, which is composed of ad¬ ministrative teachers and representatives from the school board. Mrs. Kimmel and Mr. Bell are also on the Governor’s Task Force, a committee for investigation of calls for revision in the educational programs in Illinois.

Charles O. Austin, Jr., former principal of Rock Island Senior High School, is the new superintendent of the Rock Island Public School System. After one year in the role of Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Austin became ac¬ quainted with his new duties. Mr. Austin is responsible for acquiring an adequate amount of teachers and an efficient maintenance staff.
