THIRD ROW: Head Coach Gary Ackerson, Assistant Coach Jim Perterson, Craig Shoemaker, Bill Schuster, Tom Chappell, Bob Graves, Dave Thompson, Mike Burke, Dennis Downing, Doug Clausen, and Bob Hotle. FOURTH ROW: Jerry Murphy, Greg Steffen, Mgr.; Lynn Burris, Dave VanLandshoot, Scott Buckles, Bryce Anderson, Palmer Boynton, Dave Webb, Wayne Simmons, Donald Madelung, and Jim Bell FIFTH ROW: Stan Lohmier, Bob Johnson, Roy Gonzales, Benn Farrar, Larry Graves, Bill McDonnell, John Timm, Glen Gray, Jim Andrews, and Dave Conrad SIXTH ROW: Gary Davis, Mgr.; Sam Karon, Dennis Carlson, Scott Mclwain, Dan Harris, Larry Begyn, Dave Lucky, Chuck Gregory, Marion White, Brent Lane, Ralph Fisher, and Randy Kirk BACK ROW: Mike Jinks, Bob Bailey, Paul Adams, Mark Wallarab, Mike Lundahl, Terry Klema, Chris Kirk, Mark Peak, Bart Jones, Wayne Hughs, and Kirk Anderson. The 1966-67 Rock Island Swimming- Team stroked through another outstanding season and broke many records throughout their schedule. Head Coach Gary Ackerson and his “Dolphins” lost only to Moline and Peoria Richwoods while swimming 10 dual meets. The R.I. swimmers knocked off C.R. Washington in dual meet competition, hand¬ ing the Warriors their first defeat in four years. In championship meets, the Rocks won their own Thanksgiving Relays, and the Riverside-Brookfield Invitational. Rocky placed no lower than second in other cham¬ pionship meets, including the Quad-City meet, Miss. Valley Conference meet, New Trier relays, and the Illinois State District. Rock Island placed sixth in the state swimming finals rolling up 79 points. Se¬ nior Steve Gilliam placed third in the indi¬ vidual medley and second in the backstroke, breaking his own school records in each performance. Junior Bill Schuster placed third in the backstroke. Sophomore Marc Gilliam streaked to victory in the butterfly, three-tenths of a second off the state record. The free style relay of Tom Chappell, Mike Conrad, Dave Johnson, and Steve Frink placed eighth. The Gilliam brothers and Achuster are probable All-Americans in their respective events. Top performers for the Rocks were seniors Steve Gilliam, Steve Frink, Mike Conrad, Dave Johnson, Jerry Murphy, Mike Crow, and Dick Turnbull. Top juniors were Tom Chappell and Bob Hotle, with Marc Gilliam as the only soph o¬ more to win an event in the state finals. 222
