LEADING INTERFERENCE. Ken Williams (68) opens a gap for Floyd Rose (44) in the Moline game. Rocks Start, Finish Strong for 3-6 Record For the second year in a row, the Rock Island Varsity football team compiled a record of three wins and six losses. How¬ ever, one must read more than just the won- lost column to analyze a team. In the opener with the Alleman Pioneers, the Islanders displayed fierce tackling , precise timing in blocking, a crunching offensive ground game, and a devastating aerial attack. The result was a 30-13 victory for the Rocks. In the second tilt, against Jefferson C.R., the J-Hawks re¬ covered a number of R.I. fumbles and scored twice on interceptions in scarring the Rocks with their first setback, 48-13. For Rocky ' s third game, the Moline Maroons entered Rocky Stadium only to be set back by a crew of determined Rock Island Rocks, by the score of 14-13. Moline tallied twice with only one PAT in the first half, while the Rocks stormed back in the final half for 14 points, enough for the verdict. After the conquest of the Maroons, the next two games on the road meant two hard losses —one to the Clinton River Kings, 14-7, and one to the East Moline Panthers, 7-6, in a mud-bath. Bright hopes of a Homecoming victory were snuffed out as the Davenport West Falcons crushed the Rocks 20-6. On the road for two more games, the Rocks faced defeat at the hands of Washington 29-19 in a close game to the finish, and also to Davenport Central by a score of 48-13. Ending a long season on a sweet note, the Islanders dumped Dubuque 20-13, after jumping to a big lead at the start and battling off a comeback by the Rams.
