DEBATE MEMBERS ARE, FRONT ROW: Laura Van Der Kamp, Dave Van Landshoot, Feff Gersick. SECOND ROW: Bill Swan, Bob Goldman, Jim Brennecke, Steve Sanders THIRD ROW: Steven Orr, Mark Schwiebert, Dave Downing. Rocky’s Debate Team Takes State- Wide Honors Twenty-eight Rocky debaters p lunged headlong into the fields of presentation, debate, radio communication, and ex¬ temporaneous speaking . Seventh period every day found room 146 ringing with resounding eloquence and original oratory. The debate team set its sig hts on the Augus- tana Debate Tournament, the Sterling Invitational, and the Sectional at East Peoria, and prepared itself in numerous practice debates which probed into widely varied aspects of the foreign aid program. Mr. William Armstrong gave advice in tech¬ nique and presentation. MANY HOURS OF Research are required to present a DEBATE COACH WM Armstrong patiently listens to convincing debate needed to attain high Debate Club rebuttals during debate practice, goals this year

KEY CLUB CABINET are: Ernie Jones, John Harder, Jim Slack, John Pepke, Jim Savage, Ted Spurgetis, and Doug Gillette. The Key Club, a junior branch of the Ki- wanis Club, is in its third year as a service organization at Rock Island High School. Members achieve the organization’s goal — service to the community —in several ways. Projects this year included a soap drive for the Dixon State Hospital and sponsorship of queen candidates for the a nnual Kiwanis Karnival. Club members select new members from faculty nomination. Key Club Introduces Basketball Programs KEY CLUB MEMBERS are, FRONT ROW: Jim Slack, Jim Savage, Greg Cliff, Steve Haines, Ted Spurgetis, Ernie Jones, Jim Rankin. YOUTH FORUM OFFICERS are: Malcomb Dalkoff, John Pepke, Tim Fuller, and Bill Swan. STUDENT FORUM emerged this year to replace Youth Forum giving students an opportunity to express their views. The im¬ portant difference is that Student Forum is affiliated with Youth Involvement in Govern¬ ment, a national organization representing student opinion. It is broken into local, coun¬ ty, state and national divisions. The latter three have conventions where participants draft platforms based on the consensus of student opinion. Each year the national con¬ vention presents its platform to the White House, climaxing the year of local debate and discussion. Students and Teachers Exchange STUDENTS POINT OUT opinions of the student body to members of the faculty. They also voice opinions on national affairs. 197
