FROM DISTRICT AND SECTIONAL, ROCKY ADVANCES TO STATE CONTEST enact a dramatic scene from the contest The contest play entitled “Medea” is taking Rocky speech students to the state meet in Champaign in April. With second place district and first place sectional wins behind them, the veteran cast presents the play in the traditional style of a Greek tragedy employing a chorus to foretell events and narrate occurrences. The play itself concerns Medea (portrayed by Ruth Coffin), and Jason (played by Mike Gersick), her husband. Together they have experienced deep love, committed murder and other crimes for the fleece of the Golden Ram, and become divorced. The action occurs in a camp outside the city where Medea and her nurse (Jan O’Melia) learn of Jason’s plans to marry the king’s daughter. Medea sends a gift of a poisonous golden veil and diadem which causes the death of the princess and of King Creon (Steve Hause). When Medea kills her two sons, Jason returns to the camp. Upon seeing him, Medea commits suicide. The play closes with Jason’s vow to undo the past and live for the future. The cast members for the play “M e d i a " include, front row, Stephen and John Grate, Frances Eldred and Nancy Jo Powers. In the back row are T i m Bauer, Ruth Coffin, Kathy Stengel, Cris Lar¬ son, Stephen Hawes, and Janice O’Melia. Absent from the picture are Mike Gersick and Ron Johnston. SPEECH 133
