Loaded with hold-overs from last year ' s squad the Rock thin- clads have a very good chance of placing high in conference and state competition. One of the many outstanding lettermen returning from last year ' s team is Tom Thomas, shown at right with head track coach Hod Lun- deen. Thomas was the state champion in the 440 yard dash in 1960 and is given a good chance to repeat this year. Other fine prospects include dashmen Bill Banks, Jon Hayes, and Bob White; hurdlers Dick Cummings, Jerry Twitty, Marion Whitely, and Terry Baltzer; high jumpers Mike Bisby and Jeff Tyler; shot putters Mike Stewart and Dave Beeman, and pole vaulter John Schmact. 194 TRACK

Steve Urie, Phil Burke, Gene Utke, Christian Rohlfing, Tom John- The Rock Island tennis team finished fall competition with a remarkable record They swept Quad-City honors by defeating all teams twice, and by a score of 9-0 in every instance except one. In the Quad-City meet Rock Island players cap¬ tured the first place spot in every singles division, with Tom Johnson as number one, Gene Utke, two, John Fox, three, and Neal Peterson, four. The combination of Utke and Peterson also fin¬ ished first in doubles competition. The Spring schedule includes all Mississippi Valley Conference members, as well as non-con¬ ference meets with teams such as Evanston, last year ' s state champions.
