With the publishing of the 1954 Cotton Picker, we have actually recorded our own brand in the brand book of Nueces County. Naturally it is the letter R. R stands not only for Robstown, but also for Right3 and Right we'll always be. Because our brand has been heated with fervor and zeal, there is stamped on our he arts and minds the things that we have learned. We hope that the Records in this Cotton Picker will bring back memories and keep them fresh and vivid in the years to come. i Lamn- lalooii- E.clvl'or K' g I WV il N IJ I! Brands! There is a man in our school who has left his trademark forever on R. H. S. Do you know him? Who saves a difficult situation with a jest? Who puts his whole self into everything he does? Who has brought us state-wide recognition by building up the Robs- town Relays? Coach J. B. Outlaw, of course! Robstown has memories of him that go back to seven years ago, but everyone in high school knew him as coach of the track team. It was that year that the Robstown Relays, which have made people wake up and take notice of R. H. S., began. Grads of his courses -- shorthand and bookkeeping -- now profit from the thorough training he gave, but we undergrads enjoy his clever wit, his jokes, and his unique ways of making a point clear and penetrating. Many are the stories we remember that prove his brand of fun -- how he entered the Nut Bowl Contest as Miss Sophisticate 1951 , how he makes short- hand drills of school yells, how he settled the argu- ment of the track boys about the length of the dash stripes. We laugh even now about those boys kneeling on the highway with the measuring tape. This year Mr. Outlaw won the Padre Island Walkathon with his pinwheel start and finish and won -- most important of all his prizes -- a red 1948 Ford convertible. Since he has branded us with the branding iron of his intelligence, and personality, we respond with a , and we dedicate our 1954 Cotton Picker to Coach j.B. Outlaw. 2 a ' I 2252 ,E IW is . 1 K lk ,W -695, f ' sg Elf? BNIYSJ SLI EYIN EN EN Mr. Banks, in his pleasant of- fice , welcomes all with school problems, listens attentively, and helps them find the solution. It is hard to see how one man can keep up with all high school activities, and yet, Mr. Corder is there whenever a group of high school students perform. W. N. for-liar 1'lNlZl'l'a :I ur. nu The Board of Trustees have been exceptionally busy this year and have many re- sults to show for their work. Six classrooms are now being added to Hattie Martin Elementary and three classrooms to Robstown Elementary. However, the Trustees have not only made plans to improve grade schools, but they have also put the final okay on plans and specifications for a homernaking cottage, which will be located directly behind -the high school, and an administrative office building, which will be located on the corner of Fir st St re et and Avenue H, across from Hattie Martin. Quiet planning, unassuming work, and good management by these men have resulted in what seems to be an outburst of improvements in our schools. W. A. Ahlrich B. E. First of all, it takes a great deal of planning. This year, it began with our trip to Austin, where we learned the fundamentals of a good yearbook. In all our work - and there is a lot of hard work in putting an annual together - we keep in mind what Q want as well as the rules for judging a good yearbook, Here we find Mrs. Kantz, our sponsor, supervising Caroline Hanke, Copy Editorg Ella Barbara Regmund, Staff Memberg Homer Smith, Business Managers Penny Hill, Production Editor, Harry Hutchison, Photographer, Tena Wood, Editor, F, A. 'EIN Half the fun of starting school is watching the band work out on the practice field every afternoon, cheering madly when they strike up Prairie Jump, and listening in awe to Hail to Robstown at football games and pep rallies. The band literally makes the annual bonfire which is held before the homecoming football game. Come concert season, we go long-hair and enjoy classical music. The R. H. S. band mixes its fun with pleasure. This year they stayed at Camp Warnicke in New Braun- fels between shows at the, Battle of Flowers. From all reports, they had a wonderful time. From all reports, we have a wonderful band! Part of the color and pageantry of the band is due to the excellent twirling staff. headed by Haroldine Herwig, drurn major. Blocking for the backfield, tacklingthe opposition, racing for the goal line, in all these, the feeling of team spirit showed through. Even numerous injuries didn't dampen the fighting Picker Spirit. With all of their good pitching, the Pickers still lost more games than they won, as a result of too many errors at the first of the season. After losing the first two district games, they then beat Sinton and Beeville and ended the season in grand style, playing Falfurrias in the last game. If the Pickers had won, the district would have been thrown into a four- way tie. However, after fighting all the way, the Pickers lost 2-O, when the Falfurrias pitcher tossed a no-hit game. Ray Buckholt pitched a one-hit game himself. Thus ended another sports season. Vw I 1 M f .t Sflff' Q X f f +,f,t,h Spectators watch as Buddy sizzles one down the base line. They promptly proved themselves worthy of the brand of R. H. S. by building for homecoming a bonfire that attracted nearly everyone in town, including the fire engine, the band, the entire student body, and many nostalgic homecomers. That was only the beginning of the Fish activities. They wound up their first year in high school with a variety show entitled Freshmen Follies that was professional in plan and presentation. Even the mighty Seniors grudgingly admitted that the Freshmen have a bright future before them. Beautiful red roses, symbolizing the responsibilities of the Sen- iors meant more to the .Tuniors than in pre- vious years. Even though most of the cere- mony was very solemn, and to some, al- most sacred, there were times duringthe reading of the class will and prophecy when peals of gay laughter rocked the whole audi- torium. But, beneath this laughter and gaiety, there was always a feeling of sad- ness and the realization that high school days were just about over for the Seniors. The Class of'54 willed many articles and characteristics to the teachers and students remaining in R. H. S.g and many wonderful things were predicted for the members of the graduating class. The Cla s s History was read, the Class Gift presented, and the Dedication of the Annual announced. Then the Juniors and Seniors formed the solemn procession to carry out the old custom of each Senior presenting a Junior-with a rose.
