It is com- posed of Quartermasters, Radlomen, Slgnalmen, Yeomen, Hospital Corpsmen, and Postal Clerk. The Quartermasters aided ln safely navigating the MC- CARD through more than 60,000 mlles of water tncludlng the Atlantic and Paclflc Oceans, the Caribbean, Philip- pine, and South Chlna Seas, the Gulf of Tonkln and the Panama Canal. The Radlomen handled the greatly increased message traffic tn the manner that gained continual praise.MC- CARD's equipment was always up and often called upon to relay lnformatlon between other ships having radio difficulties. The Slgnalmen, responstble for all the visual communl- catlon and ldentlflcatlon, did an outstanding job. While ln the Gulf of Tonltln the majority of the shlp's maneuvers were executed by flashing light, demanding constant vigilance and alertness. The Yeomen kept MC CARD in clam waters ln the ad- ministrative aspects of the deployment by staying abreast of the many and frequent changes in control and pro- cedure. The Hospital Corpsmen handled all medicalsltuattons from minor cases of sea sickness to severe cuts and broken bones ln a professional and efficient manner. The Postal Clerk ls probably the most popular man on the ship by nature of his position. The several tons of mall he sorted and distributed helped keep high morale both abroadud at home. SMl P. To en- able the shlp to be at maximum readiness the Store- keepers kept a quarter of a million dollars worth of re- pair parts and consumables ready for immediate issue. The Commlssarymen satisfied the appetites of 300 men through the preparation of three daily meals, Bo1les rolls becoming an established baking institution. The laundry and barber shop kept the standards of military smartness at a peak and the sh1p's store enabled the crew SKC D. R, Chasteen to spend a portion of their hard earned combat pay on items ranging from everyday toiletries to sophisticated electronic equipment. A popular figure throughout the deployment was the dlsburslng clerk who was kept busy figuring the financial benefits ofa WELSTPAC deployment. And finally the Steward branch, who maintained the ward- room and officers country and kept the ice cream dishes filled. The effectiveness of these 30 men and their shlp- wide contribution to the tempo of operations tn a combat environment exemplified the Supply motto of Service to the fleet. s e I I ' nrhmll 1 1 1 CSC L. These men are some of the hardest workers aboard. They provide steam to the main engines and shlp's servlce enerators and also water for consumptlon, cleaning, ant? housekeeping ser- vices. Durlng this deployment the sn1pes , as they are some- times affectionately called, steamed the ship over 60,000 ..: miles and burned four million gallons of fuel without missing a commitment. This was done under one of the most vigorous tests the Engineering Department on a destroyer can undergo: acting as a plane guard for alr- craft carriers during prolonged periods of flight op- erations. No matter what the task, the engineers stlll must provide the black smoke and white water to run the ship. Their motto: Fight she might, but steam she will. MMQS neplpr MMC W, Lariscy MMC C.
