In this Space Age we hear much about rockets, satellites, missiles, and outer space. To introduce the sections of the i960 REBEL, we have chosen these devices which have only, as yet, opened a small realm ot the understanding of space. What today is astounding to us will be common- place tomorrow. The REBEL Staff has worked dili- gently to prepare an annual which we hope will, later in lite, bring back memories ot 1960. Y K K Mr. Moore 's Message TO THE CLASS OF 1960: My message to the Class of 1960 is perhaps the most difficult one l have ever written, primarily because the complexity of this most swiftly-changing world is more acute than any other generation has faced on such a large scale. This is a time when almost every facet of our lives and beliefs has been challenged, destroyed or questioned. Nations now allied with us were, only a brief time ago, our mortal enemies-people whom we were taught to believe were barbarians of sub-human instincts. Conversely, our erstwhile allies, Russia and China, now challenge us on all sides, especially in the intellectual, moral, and scientific realms of life. It seems to me that the leadership of our country, local, state and national, suffers from a quiescent kind of inferiority complex. lt seems resigned to accepting second place in the game of life. I fear very much that American cockiness, spirit, and self-assurance are being imperceptibly eroded. What is the answer for you? lt seems to me to be very simply this: a rededication to experiment, adventure, intellectual and moral aggressiveness, a dedication to service to our nation and to mankind. The fast buck artist, the get my share boys have no place in any scheme to preserve our nation and its very precious free- dom. We must be determined evangelists of the proposition that second best is not good enough for us and is beneath our contempt. As the future young parents you MUST, therefore, demand of your political and educational leaders that the change start in the schools. Here is the place for the only possible American Renaissance. Your schools are not good enough and possibly never will be good enough to herald the greatness of our American dream-but we can try. The empires of the future are in the frontiers of the mind. Poem CLASS POEM 1960 We are the Class ot 1960, Soon each to go his separate way. We've gone through many struggles together Since that first chaotic Freshman day. Our Sophomore year, we all relaxed- We knew the routine better. We joined many clubs, studied more, Followed the rules-well, almost!-to the letter. Then we were Juniors- Oh, what a year! We all had been dreading That year with tear. But soon our tears were all relieved, Our teachers were kinder than our minds had con- ceived. And now We've reached That all-important day, The day when each of us Goes his separate way. The end ofthe beginning? The beginning of the end? To know which will be, None of us pretend. But if memories ever take us back To where we want to be, We'll find our hearts and souls Again at dear old R. E. Lee. Mary Colquitt Color: Yellow and White Flowers: Yellow Rose Song 3 SENIOR CLASS SONG 1960 Soon We'll be leaving you, dear ole R. E. Lee. lt's so hard to say goodbyes, These bring tears into our eyes. So from the deepest spot within each of our own hearts We sincerely want to thank thee! Through the tour years that We've been here, We have known no greater ioys of wonderful friends and teachers Who have helped us along the way. These are memories that will linger with us all our days. Although we may climb the steepest mountain or sail the Smoothest sea, we will n'er forget you, Dearest Robert E. Lee. Goodbye, dear ole R. E. Lee. And now goodbye dear faculty, May the good Lord bless and keep you ln every single way, and may each of us so live That we may all meet again some sweet day. THELMA DANIEL Assistant Dietitian MR. JACK MORGAN Maintenance Superintendent MRS. JACK MORGAN Dietitian Courses of Study The Science Department at Robert E. Lee offers general science and biology, which are re- quired for graduation, chemistry, and physics. The aim of the Science Department is to give stu- dents a working knowledge of our environment and to give them a background for college science courses. The Mathematics Department has a dual purpose program. One program, composed of algebra courses, plane geometry, and trigonometry courses, is a college preparatory program. The second program is designed for those students who are not planning to attend college, and this program is composed of general mathematics and business mathematics. It is a well-known fact that a student's use of the English language tells a teacher or pro- spective employer much about that student. The Language Department strives to teach students the proper use of spoken and written English as well as an appreciation and an understanding of outstanding literature. Four years of English, three years of Latin, two years of Spanish, journal- ism, and speech are the courses offered. Courses in history, a problems of democracy course, social living, and geography courses -all these are taught in the Social Science Department. The purpose of this department is to give students an insight into government, past and present, and to teach students how to co- operate with others by being active citizens. The purpose ofthe Military Department is to prepare boys for prospective service in the armed forces by the teaching of various military skills and to instill in these boys a regard for proper authority. This department also sponsors a Rifle Team, a Radio Club, and a Drill Team. The courses in the Commercial Department are planned to give the student preparation for his vocation in the world of business and to give students a general understanding of business. Courses in shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, and business law, are taught. ln order to be a well-rounded student, a person should have physical education included in the curriculum. The physical education classes teach students health education combined with teaching the skill of various sports and recreations. Vocational Education includes a course in shop and the D.C.T. program which gives students actual training and experience in a chosen trade by means of part-time work. Also included in this is a four-year home economics course. The Future Homemakers of America's a club designed to help girls in their future careers as homemakers. A student not only receives personal satisfaction from musical courses, but also gives pleas- ure to others by various recitals and programs. Each year boys participate in the many sports programs which are offered to them. Many of these boys are inexperienced in this ex- citing game called football, but still they try to do their best each time they play against opposing teams. - This 1959-60 team has done a Wonderful job. Managers: Larry Rowell, Gerrial Greene, Larry Hitson. of Although many were inex- perienced, the boys went on to do the best they could for their school. Every person here at Lee who went to any one of the football games knows that these boys have really put out an effort to bring school spirit into the game of football. We are most proud of the boys who participated in the foot- ball games during this 1959-60 sea- son. We are equally proud of the coaching staff that has made foot- ball a success at Lee this year. This year's football team has really worked for us, so why not cheer them on into next year's foot- ball season! Beverly Holstun served as chairman of the exchange committee composed of Stanley Storey and Nan Middlebrooks. Students chosen for the exchange were screened by a faculty committee. Requirements were grades, personality, character, and leadership ability. The Port Washington students spent the week of March 26-April 2 in Thomaston, and several weeks later our students visited Wisconsin. A group of students was chosen to keep the exchange students from Port Washington, and a different group will be the Lee exchange students. The exchange students from Lee were not chosen at the time of the publication of the REBEL.
