The 1955-56 Robert E. Lee baseball team under the direction of Coach Jim Chafin swept to 0 most successful season in their first year. The Leemen made their baseball debut against the Romer Golden Eagles in Romer. The Generals took their opening game 7-0 behind the combined seven-hit pitching of Wayne Graydon and Johnny Andrews and the booming bots of Bill Shepherd and Billy McNair. Shepherd collected the first General hit in history and McNoir scored the first run. After the Ramer game the Generals toured to Tallossee and added their second win at the expense of the Tigers 5-2. The Generals swept their third straight contest in Selma against the A. G. Parrish Tigers 9-0. Next game, the game everyone was waiting for, Lee vs. Lomier, James Porhom led the Generals to a thrilling 10-1 victory. The Generals notched the county championship as they defeated the Romer Nine for the second time. The Generol's first loss of the season come at the hands of the Auburn Freshmen . For the second time of the year Don Sellers beat the Selma Tigers 6-0. After trimming the Tigers, the Leemen had their hands full in downing Lanier the second time. The score was 4-3. The Generals lost to Tollossee 6-4 in their next contest and the next win came in the 3rd District ploy-off against Camden. We won 12-3. Lee defected Jemison with o 3-1 win, and then tackled Demopolis. We lost two out of three games to Demopolis - the scores being 0-15, 1-0, and 0-3. The first baseball team of Lee set 0 fine record with nine games won and four lost. Congratulations to this team for an excellent season! 87

Lee last year come the introduction of a new high school sport in the state, namely wrestling. Lee High was not found wanting for wrestlers. Lee entered the state tour- nament with a young and inexperienced team, but courage and the desire to win were on the Gene- rolts side. The Lee team finished second in the state. Individual winners were: Skeeter Gunn H38 Ib. state chompiont, Jimmy Taylor 027 lb. state chompiont, Froncher Phelps, Charles Tatum, Croig Miller, James Johnson, Smoky Evans, Juddy Smith, Judson Huett, and Royce Williams. 86
