By participating in the plays and other activities, enough points were earned to become members of Thespians. The Thespian troop at Robbinsdale is troop number 666, with Miss Bess Sinnott as adviser. The club was led by Wayne Adams, president; Jerry Engen, vice president; Pat Cook, secretary; Beverly Franz, clerk; and David Cadwell, treasurer. First row: W. Adams, P. Cook. B. Franz, Miss Sinnott. Those terrific moments before the curtain opened and the play began! During the whole production there never was a dull moment: from the time they started making gigantic sunflowers, carrots, and potatoes until they finished painting scenery and rehearsing. The play was a fabulous fable of a present day youth whose home and heritage are saved by the dramatic reappearance of his fighting forebears. It was well-liked by all the students, and received all the credit which it deserved. With the leading characters played by Jerry Huber and Joanne Weber, supported by such fine 42nd and Broadway actors as Robert Middleton, Norville Pervier, Roger Schreder, Sherrie Dybevick, Marlys Leean, Paula Bursch, and many other juniors, the play was a success. Carmen Lovelace and Nancy Whitman were student directors and Miss Sinnott was the director-in-chief. 37 First row: J. Peterson, A. Fedor, J. Johnson, S, Sepple, K. Henderson, Mrs. Holtz, J. SPANISH CLUB COMO esta listed?” is a popular question which is often asked in any language.Mrs. Holtz's two Spanish classes find this one easy to answer. Many an evening the members found themselves facing a plate of Spanish food and were quite bewildered as to how to eat it. But once the first mouthful was down, they began to realize what good food really tasted like. But when it came to Chile con Frijoles, a lot of milk was needed to take away that burning sensation. Breaking the traditional pinata at the Christmas meeting is a much-looked-forward-to event. When the bag of candy is finally broken, there is a mad scramble for it. As always, caroling in the halls provided much enjoyment for the Spanish Club as well as the rest of the student body. This year, the Spanish Club joined with the German Club in singing Silent Night, each in their own language. Whether they had an unlimited vocabulary or merely knew a few phrases, all the members of the Spanish club enjoyed the Spanish movies which they saw at the University. Could it be those dashing Latin-Amcrican heroes really caught their fancies? So all in all, this year's Spanish club spent a muy interesante” year under the direction of president Senorita Sandy Sepple: vice president: Senorita Joy Johnson; secretary. Senor Kent Henderson and treasurer, Senorita Anna Fedor. 38 First row: Mrs. Holtz; Pres., S. Sepple; Sec., K. Henderson. Second row: V. Pres.,J. Johnson; Treas., A. Fedor. First row: R. Johnson. R. DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN WI E geht es Ihnen?” Perhaps this phrase has greeted you as you entered the halls of R.H.S. Did you know how to answer? A member of Der Deutsche Verein would have. it is only two years old, this club has grown considerably and has become familiar to all. Nobody could miss noticing the special Christmas activities of Der Deutsche Verein. During the week preceding the holidays, this club wished everyone a Frohliche Weihnachten” by playing German Christmas carols over the public address system. In addition, a German country Christmas scene was displayed in the main floor showcase. If you had asked any Schuler or Schulerinof Der Deutsche Verein where they had been the morning of December 24, they would have looked at you in a doubtful manner. But they would have to admit they had a wonderful time at their early momingChristmas breakfast at the Curtis Hotel. After a delicious breakfast of bacon and eggs, everyone joined in a few choruses of O Tannenbaum and Stille Nacht. Music plays an important part in the«life of the German Club, Because of this, a quartet has been formed. But we shouldn't exclude the other forty members of the German Club, since they all lend their voices in singing the favorite songs of Germany. All these activities are led by president, Pat Cook, Vice President. Ronald Guthals, Secretary-Treasurer, Martha Olson, and the two Junior Consuls, James Cook and Richard Johnson. A record of all activities and events is preserved in a scrapbook kept by the historian, Nancy Gustafson. First row: M. Olson. P.Cook, N. Gustafson. Miss Snabbi. Second row; R. Guthals. R. Johnson. Some of the things they do are, special lighting effects, sound effects, and moving of stage props. Besides this they have charge of the michro-phones and curtains. Without their help our class plays and assemblies would not be a success. We should all give them credit for the fine job they are doing; they deserve it. ANNOUNCERS HOW uninformed we'd be without our faithful announcers Tom Wills and Jim Hoiby who bring us the latest news of the happenings at R.H.S. every fifth hour. With writing scripts, painting scenery, learning lines, and making costumes, they were really on the ball . One of their biggest tasks was planning the Armistice Day program in November. In February also, they presented a play concerning the lives of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. For both of these programs they used an historical theme. Besides learning to write script, they have practically memorized the history of the U. S. and the Lincoln-Douglas debates (they didn't try). Some of the actors even learned the Minuet . (Wonders never cease!) All in all, this year's club worked really hard, but had fun doing it. Barbara Foss was president; Joann Meister, vice president; Maryls Leean, secretary; Agatha Gleason, treasurer, and Miss Snabbi was faculty adviser. Congratulations for a year of wonderful assemblies! ORGAN HOW proud RHS is of its organ! It was purchased with the money earned by magazine drives , and contributed by senior classes, and the P.T.A. Besides being used during assembly programs, it is used for practicing by our organ students. CHEERLEADERS THE ROBINS TALE FEATHERS SPORTRAIT SOPHISTICATED SENIORS HOW Wayne Adams and Sandy Scpple of the feature page and Barb Foss of the Editorial page ever got their pagesout on time is a big question. Amidst the juggling, writing of poetry, and giggling could be found Judy Olsen and Chuck Johnson working on the front and sport pages, respectively. The answer to that is, only five per cent of the Junior Class and ten per cent of the Senior Class -- so these kids are really tops . They must have such qualities as leadership, character, and pleasing personality, and also excel in scholarship and service. Membership in this organization is the highest honor given by Robbinsdale High School. Their first big project of the year was the magazine drive. At first, the results were quite discouraging, but with encouragement from the Student Senate it finally gained momentum, and towards the end it was really rolling along. Part of the money earned was used to buy blackout curtains for the auditorium. Besides this, the Senate sold candy at the basketball games, sponsored noon hour (?) dancing in the community room, and sold football pencils during homerooms. Perhaps the mimeographed reports of Senate meetings were the biggest improvement made. With Kenny Voight as president; Mary Purcell, vice president; and Mary Ellen Dooley, secretary; the Student Senate really took a forward stride in 1951-1952. 51 1st row; S. Pierson, J. Messmer, J. Johnson, G. Sandberg, J. Milford. 2nd row: Miss Skartvedt, D. Worwa, N. Hermanson, J. LeBar, J. Honsey. C. Lovelace, F. Blonigan. J. Milford. HOW about some good, wholesome fun? That's exactly what the girls in G.A.A. wanted. Skarty , and Miss Werschem, with the student managers took care of this with such sports as endball, volleyball, archery, basketball, badminton, baseball, and tennis. Teams ranging from the Dancing Devils to the Sinkerettes competed for high honors in their particular sport. But there was individual recognition also. Emblems, letters, and pins were a-warded to the girls fulfilling the necessary requirements. Miss Valborg Skartvedt, Girls' Physical Education Director, and her assistant, Miss Mildred Werschem, were the advisers of G.A. A., the athletic division of Girls' Club. 52 1st row: Mrs. Springer, M. Girls' Club, organized by Miss Skartvedt, is really an extension of G.A.A., striving to create a greater feeling of friendship, to develop character, leadership and personality, to render service, and to promote a high standard of ideals. This year's Girls' Club Program included: September The Invitation Tea October Informal Initiation November Harvest Moon Dance and Formal Initiation January Mothers' Tea February Valentine Dance March Installation of New Officers April Cotton Ball May Senior Tea Faculty advisers were Mrs. Springer, Miss Mickelson, Miss Skartvedt, Miss Ryan, and Mrs. Holtz. Student officers were Mary Purcell, president; Sandra Sepple, vice president; Shirley Pierson, Secretary; Mary Ellen Dooley, treasurer. Cabinet members include: art, Louise Greene; decorations, Carolyn Petersen and Karen Thorne; entertainment, Joann Meister and Janice Peterson; G.A.A., Joan Honsey and Dodo Warwa; historian, Barbara Foss; hostesses, Pat Cook, Joy Johnson, and Lois Moran; publicity Martha Olson; Red Cross, Karen Johnson. 53 WELCOME CLUB OFFICERS 1st row . This was the chief concern of the Welcome Club. It was their job to promote a friendly atmosphere in school. They did this by giving a party at the beginning of the year to introduce new students to Robbinsdale. Besides this, in the spring the R.H.S. Welcomes gave an orientation program for the Freshmen Class telling them what to expect when they enter senior high next year. (They sure catch on fast!) COMMERCIAL CLUB 1st row: L. Roles, D. Miller, Mrs. Kjorlaug, Miss Peterson, L. Greene. 2nd row: J. Meister, A. Hoffman, A. Fedor. HOW about those hours spent by our Commercial Club typing absentee lists, report cards, class play programs, and P. T. A. notices? Every period of the day, at least one of them could be found hard at work in the duplicating room. When they weren't busy with the routine stuff, they could always run off 60 copies of Chemistry in Everyday Life for Hank . Remember our Commercial Club, kids, the next time you make an airplane out of that home-bound P. T. A. notice! 54 JUNIOR RED CROSS 1st row; P. Cook, K. Johnson, R. Johnson, J. Honsey, C. The Junior Red Cross represents the American Red Cross in schools throughout the country. The main project of the Robbinsdale Chapter was making a gift chest and filling the chest with educational and recreation equipment in preparation for shipment to schools in foreign countries. Another project was the securing of volunteer blood doners for the Armed Forces Blood Center. On the second Thursday of each month, four Junior Red Cross members attended the Henepin County chapter meetings at Red Cross headquarters in Minneapolis. The senior high, delegates were Diane Root, Pat Cook, Karen Johnson, and Lorraine Franz. This club was advised by Mrs. Springer and Mrs. Moore of the senior high, and Mrs. Durfee and Mr. Rose of the junior high. NURSE’S CLUB 1st row: P. Cook, N. Gustafson, P. HOW do you know who to send back to class, and who to supply with one of those scarce beds? It must have been quite a problem for our future nurses with so many chronic headaches on test days. All of this was part of the education of the girls who worked in our Nurse's Office this year. Besides this service ?) the Nurses’Club set out to orientate its members in the Nursing Profession by other, more glamorous methods, such as movies, hospital visits, and panel discussions. President of this group was Nancy Gustafson, president elect, Pat Ovshak, and Pat Cook, secretary. Mrs. Barnier, our new school nurse was their adviser. Hats off to our future gals in white . 55 SHOWCASES HOW’s that for a terrific idea? Every show case display has been a swell idea, thanks to Pat Cook, Louise Greene, and Lillian Roles. Various activities in the high school calendar were the subjects for the displays. Miss Bess Sin-nott, faculty adviser, and these three busy girls did a swell job of beautifying our halls. TRI-CHROMA Tri-Chroma, Robbinsdale's art club, has as its aim and purpose the furtherance of art appreciation. Since the Club's organization two years ago, its members have made and sold Christmas greeting cards, decorated for Homecoming dances, and have kept a scrap book of all activities pertaining to Robbinsdale High School. The officers this year were as follows: president, Lillian Roles; vice president, James Ramsburg; secretary and treasurer; Louise Greene, Adviser, Miss Phyllis Booton. 56 HALL GUIDES HOW we developed callouses (you know where) sitting at the hall guide desks in the halls. We passed the time of day by checking passes (?), or fetching the truant list down to M.M. Of course, of the passes we did check, some were legitimate and some were otherwise.n Naturally those that were otherwise were immediately brought to the attention of Mrs. Springer, (sure hope she reads this!) HOMECOMING CHAIRMEN Memories ol our wonderful 1951 Homecoming will include thoughts of hours of work besides those of Queen Marlys, the exciting game with St. Cloud, and the theme Gay Nineties , for our Homecoming chairmen. The students responsible for such a successful homecoming were Paula Bursch, over-all chairman, Mary Lou Sunblad, Pat Cook, Denny Nelson, Don Oslin, and Don Nelson. (Not really, but we have to say something touching). To the administration we leave nothing, as we feel we have nothing they would want. To our most beloved faculty we leave our witty endeavors to give them inspiration through the trying centuries and to the underdogs, our little juniors, we leave all our unpaid office calls. Our so called Don Juan (Wayne Adams, to the simple tools) wills his usually up-lifted eyebrow to all future Romeos. And to Mrs. Bezanson, Cal Anderson gives his ardent political spirit. May she never go banished to the Siberian salt mines for it. Swede Carlson leaves all his tea parties (hmmm, was it tea?) to Duane Boucher -- don't over indulge now. Bev Bistodeau is most willing to give her bowl shaped haircuts to all those junior boys who are badly in need of them. Joy Johnson just leaves her 13 years (How Long?) Bernie Edstrom wills all his happy Bachelorhood days to Maldon Laitenen. (You've never had it so good). Ronnie Schutz wills his number 14's to Harry Champlain so he will have a better understanding. (Ho! ho! pun) Speaking of dogs, Dodo Worwa leaves her poodle haircut to any poodle who will accept it. George Panayatoff leaves Donna Smetzer to - - opps --he can't leave her to no one, no how! Ken Voight wills his falsies (teeth, that is) to Joanne Gaulke. Those daily naps in English, Dennis Hed reluctantly leave to Jud Anderson -- pleasant dreams! Plumer wills his shooting ability to Don Berndt. PatRodeghier leaves her quick action to the football team -- may they profit by it! Denny Nelson bequeaths his height to Marilyn Berg so she may walk through doors instead of crawling under. Terry Johnson wills that get-up-and-go spirit (courtesy of Lydia Pinkhams) to Bill Boggs. Sylvia Martinsen wills those halfwitted questions to her brother -- Heaven help the teachers! Janet Bies wills her shyness to Richard Johnson (Don't blush now!) Don Nelson and Audrey Leckner have gotten together and willed their laugh to any hyena running around without one. To Pinky Persson goes that black hair of Janet Cooper's -- we think it would be just the thing for him. Mickey Mielke leaves that fine, sterling name to allunsigned passes floating around. Sharon MacKensie will not leave her pep to anyone in particular but will leave a couple of quarts (pep now) to be consumed when needed in the future. Bill Hansen leaves that sultry, languid look (commonly called sex appeal) to Barbara Humphreys. Barb Smith lovingly wills her place as editor of this great literary work to Irene Hotchkiss. Joanne Skytte wills her gift of gab to Jim Cook -- may he put it to good use. And last, but not least, Jim Baukner leaves --he hopes! So the Senioi-s say Au Revior and Auf Wiedersehn. 60 J CLASS PROPHECY According to the stars here is what Robbie sees: The year is 1965; the place is Robin's Dale. As we wander through the deserted streets we hear a great raving and ranting-( In my humble opinion. ) Well! if it isn't David Cadwell running for city dog catcher. On farther, we hear tou shay, a fencing salon (not saloon) by Barb Foss, Joan Messmer and Pat Roan (cul-ups, you know). Strains of La Donna E. Mobile reach our hearing aid --it must be Joyce Brown, opera Prima Donna. Another one of our classmates has made good in the field of entertainment. Eleanor Kennison is now taking over Dag-mar's place on TV (with startling results). Leon Stevenson and Jerry Rasmussen, we hear, are managing the municiple liquor store -- just as I expected. Over, under yon shade is Lil Roles slopping paint on a canvas. Jo Bannister, we hear is doing fine on the Olympic skiing team (of course she's minus a few legs here and there). Miss Katy Wille has become a famous beauty operator and Miss Marlys Weishaar as a nurse, takes over where Katy leaves off. Robert Gerlach sits by the Brooks trying to catch some Fitch with some Engen worms, (ooh! witty) Con Brown has turned Greene from eating Hamann eggs every morning for breakfast, (unnh, another pun). Jan Peterson, it seems, heads the lingerie company named Slink'in, Inc. Jerry Shore has copped Ben Hogan's title in golf. Lorraine Stensrud has followed in her brother's footsteps and is the best woman wrestler in the business. Speaking of wrestlers Velasco, Kubec, Meister, Ernst, Dusing have star billing at the St. Paul Arena. Bergstrom, Klemm, Oie, Osheim, Davis, Pashke, and Eull have all profitted by the subject of biology, as their clothesline will testify. Say, who's that horse -- opps, we mean who's that on the horse? Guess it's Janie Phillips and behind her we have Nancy Gustafson riding into town from her farm. What have we here? The old red school looks sort of familiar, even though weather worn. Reminds us of the good old daze when we were the seniors at Robin's Dale High. 61 SPORTING GLIMPSES 62 1. Wheels? 2. And I says to her--- 3. Two pests and a Miss 4. Yea—team !! 5. When the Robins came from a 20-0 deficit in the third period to drop St. Cloud Tech, then holder of the fourth place rating in the state, 26-20, in the upset of the year, Robbinsdale went wild. To top things off it was Homecoming day and many were the smiles and happy hearts at the big dance after the game. Kenny Voight was the standout, as usual, as he rolled up three touchdowns, but he had every ounce of support possible from each of his teammates. Columbia Heights, another of the best teams in the area and the Robins only non-league foe besides Tech, proved too big and fast for the Nerdahl-coached team and walked away from the opening game a winner, 19-0. Wayzata then beat Robbinsdale, 32-0 but statistics were much closer and the game was extremely hard fought. The Trojans' Quast broke away five times and that was the ball game. When Mound came to the Robin field it was a repeat of the Wayzata game with the score reading 25-6 at the gun. Don Pudwill scored Robbinsdale's first TD of the season. Against Hopkins the ir—_ following week nothing went right as the mighty Warriors scored at will to cop the victory, 38-13. fp Pudwill and Jim Hedelius counted for Robbinsdale. Then came the once- in-a-lifetime St. Cloud Tech game. After start- ing out as usual by let- ting Tech get far ahead, the Robins came back to take what is probably the sweetest victory in Robbinsdale grid history. Against Excelsior the Robins crept back into their losing habit by falling 19-12. Dick Lund and Gary Pygman were the scorers for the purple and gold, as they slid into the conference cellar. Captain Voight led his team against a strong but underrated E-dinaClub in the latter's Homecoming game which saw the Hornets celebrate to the tune of 21-7. Voight tallied'the lone touchdown for Robbinsdale. St. Louis Park was the victim as Robbinsdale avoided the cellar spot by downing the Orioles, 24-7 in the last game of the year. Lund, Pygman, and Ron Dusing did the scoring for the winners. Roger Schultz made the all-conference first team and Voight made the second. Prospects for next season are good with ten let-termen returning. GAME GRIDDERS 64 Jacobs grabs a Lund heave- Voight goes out of bounds at Edina. At the close of the season Jim Plumedahl, Paul Watten, and Gary Pygman all received All-conference honors and Plumedhal was voted the most valuable. The Robins, playing excellent ball, opened the season with three wins against Rochester, Columbia Heights , and Wayzata, all by large margins before losing the first of three games with Hopkins' powerhouse, 44-29. Following that defeat Edina, Park, Crosby-Ironton, Little Falls, Two Harbors, Mound, and Excelsior fell to the high scoring Robbinsdale five. Four of these games were won by at least six points. Suffering from a mid season let down the Robins were upset by Wayzata and then soundly defeated by Hopkins again. Incidentally, all of the Robin defeats were at the hands of Lake teams, three to Hopkins. Then the Robins rebounded to win a thriller from St. Cloud Tech and took the measure of Edina before Park pulled an upset by dumping Robbinsdale, 34-30, on the Park Court. Mound and Excelsior were defeated in close, hard-fought games at the end of the season, with second place riding on the outcome of the game played on the Bluejay court. in the tournaments the Robins easily dumped Mound Bloomington before nosing out a fighting Wayzata team in the semi-finals. The final game was a battle of defenses and the most thrilling of the year as the Robins almost did the impossible. They finally lost to Hopkins, 43-37, with Plumedahl and Watten getting All-district honors. Pygie Denny 66 CAGE CANDIDS Plumer drives in to score against Hopkins. Co-captains Bob Kubec and Ron Dusing along with seniors Craig Velasco and John Meister formed the bulwark of the team that defeated Anoka, U High and Litchfield twice each in home-and-home competition. MQund, Wayzata, and Owatonna were the only teams to chalk up wins at the expense of the Robins. Little Denny Ernst came up with the outstanding record as he pinned six of seven opponents during one stretch of the season. Other underclassmen who stood out on the mats were big Larry Hennig, Jim Bistodeau, Frank Meister, and Harrison Ziegelman. Although there was a comparatively small number of experienced seniors on the squad, causing Grygelko to work a good deal with untried wrestlers from eighth to eleventh grades, wins were frequent and the outlook for future years is decidedly bright. In one match Robbinsdale used two eighth graders, five sophs, one junior, and three seniors, and defeated U High, 24-15. That victory was an example of what wrestling and athletics stand for; everyone, from eighth graders to seniors, working together to achieve a team triumph. 69 GYMNASTICS 1ST ROW: S. Reichel, L. Coach John Adams had his racketeers getting in shape immediately after the end of the basketball season before pitting them in duel matches against Park, Mound, Edina, U High, and Bloomington.
