Cooper. who is keenly interested in students. faculty. and community welfare. His biggest job is to coordinate the educational program for more than two thousand seven hundred students in the elementary, junior high and senior high schools of Robbinsdale. Although the years may pass, the graduates of 47 will find that Mr. Cooper will con- tinue to he a loyal friend to each and every one of them. The out-of-doors holds a keen interest for our chief driver. Many detours are planned in his summeris travels to include some of the best fish- ing spots in Minnesota. x , Superintendent E. I. Cooper Celebrates birthday Nit. N1. N1. Mielke, assistant driver of The Robin and principal of the high school, speaks plainly and to the point in his daily contact with students. This characteristic plus his friendly interest in stu- dents. his understanding of their problems, and conhdence of the students of the school makes him a friend of all the students who have gradu- ated from Robbinsdale High. In addition to his many and varied duties connected with his posi- tion, he still finds time to serve as adviser for the National Honor Society. Mr. Mielkeis hobby and favorite pastime dates back to his own college days. When not at his desk, he can often be found playing his favorite game of cribbage. M. M. Miclkc gim advice TRAFFIC Aliss I. Lucky is the student who hasn,t at sometime had to get a tardy slip or special permit! Mrs. Franzen, the Robin's nurse, has charge of seeing that all of us are in good physical condition in order that we may carry on our work to the best of our ability. In addition to working with high school students she also has charge of grade school and junior high school students. This year special X-rays were given, hearing of all students checked, and the usual dental program was pro- vided for. HEALTH 0F F ICE B, 1 t Y O TIME 0UT VVITII THE TEAFIIERS Air. Ljur Robin was fortunate in having the senior students to furnish the much needed ig- niting spark for sports and all school activities. In recognition of outstanding scholarship, leadership. and service. some twenty-seven seniors were elected to the National Honor Society. These facts alone make it safe to predict that the members of the class of 1947 are headed for success in their chosen fields. During the past three years the seniors have been well represented in such groups as the Thespians. lVlasquers. Girls. Club and Hi-Y. Nlany have shown promise in the field of dra- matics. Most of our readers will remember Donna Mielke. Elaine Skyttc. Wayne Pitmon and Ray Ras- mussen in the junior class play. the Fighting Littles. Others are familiar with the orations given by Judy Dahl. Elaine Skytte. Patti Capriotti, Har- old Smith and Catherine Duevel at the Regional Speech Festival at St. Louis Park. The class will always cherish the memories of good times and the lasting friendships they have made with their ' aClICI'S and fellow students. It took the willing cooperation and helpfulness of the junior class to push down the accelerator and give the drive to our little car. They had a very successful year and they proved their capabilities by taking an active part in every type of organiza- tion in our school. Besides placing ten members of the class on the National Honor Society, they were well represent- ed in Thespians, Girls, Club, Hi-Y, Declamation, G.A.A., choir, band, and all the other clubs and The representatives played a big part in the winning of the Lake Con- ference football title, and were worthy members of the basketball and wrestling squads too. competitive sports. junior The big dramatic production of the year was the presentation of the class play, Snafu. Some of the main parts were taken by Bob Swenson and Tom Rucker as Ronald, Pat Morse and Jackie Schmock as Kate, Carolyn Nelson and Virginia Sandmoen as the mother and Harold Jorgenson as the father. Ray Kurosad, Bruce Hebbe, Gerry Hommes and Neil Ofsthun were chosen to lead the juniors through this trying year with Ray having charge of conducting class meetings, choosing a committee to select class rings and heading the ever important Junior-Senior Prom. Congratulations are in order for the accomplishments made during 1947 and we wish them much luck and success as the future seniors of Robbinsdale High. jolly juniors 25 All Jolly Junior Lads and Lasses ROOM 209 Row 1: A. At the beginning of the year they elected Wesley Johnson, Susan McKee, Norma Paul and Harlem Smetzer to guide them through their journey. Even though they may have been rather doubtful of some of the upperclassmen at first, they soon got into the swing of things and it wasnit long until they were well represented in Susan .Uchv Harlan Smoker basketball, track, hockey, football, wrestling, choir, band, declamation, G.A.A. and journalism. P PEP GENERATORS The Robin could not travel very far without a generator to furnish the necessary energy to cheer the Boys on to victory. The Pep Club and the cheerleaders made a grand start last fall with the presentation of the new school song, Robins Now We Hail To Thee. Good work. Katie Condom and Joann Lillehei! Led by their president, Delores Vernon and their adviser Mrs. Hill. the Pep Club accomplished various things during the year. Short pep meetings were held before the major football and basketball encounters to arouse the enthusiasm of the student body. . The novel theme Doyn On The FarmH was cleverly carried out at the annual dance sponsored by this group. The proceeds from this event were used to purchase new white sweaters for the cheer- leaders. Due to the constant and loyal leadership of our cheering staff, our spirits were kept high and we were successful in cheering the boys on to many victories. Seniors Corrine Robinson and Betty Vick will be leaving the staff this year; but the Juniors and Sophomores, under the capable leadership of veterans Gerry Hommes and Ray Milford, will be back to take over again next fall. Their constant support and ever-willingness to co-operate proved to be a helpful factor in making our journey SUCCCSSfUl. Ol'R Cl lEERING STAFF: Tom Fuller. Gerry Hommcs, Alarlcne Eidcn. Under the very able coaching of Irv Ner- dahl and Red Sochacki, the boys learned hard blocking and tackling. These powerful Robins played an excellent brand of football to down the Hopkins gridders 13 to O in their first game of the season. Still an underrated team, they met the Ex- celsior eleven on a muddy field and picked up the name Nerdahl MuddersH as they defeated the Jays at their homecoming. Dick Wachtler, the roaring R.H.S. fullback, began hzs scoring spree by piling up 24 points against U High which led to his surpassing the all-time conference scoring rec- ord. Between the mighty Robin halfbacks Reichert and Therrien, and quarterback Schreyer, the Park- ers' passes were stopped and the Robins were vic- torious once more, this time 13-6. The climax to this undefeated season came when four Robbins- dale stalwarts, Schreyer, Wachtler. Carlson and Heath, were honored with positions on the mythi- cal All-Conference eleven. In years to come, as you page through this annual, we sincerely hope that this resume will assist in bringing back cherished and lasting memories of Rohhinsdaleis 1947 Ink: Conference Championship Team. THE PISTON S Under the reins of Red Sochacki, the Robin squad, forming the pistons of our auto, was driving hard all season. Losing the opener to an underdog, U. High quintette. the locals came back the next week by trouncing Park 48-33. The follow- ing week, an overconfident team traveled to Mound only to return a disappointed group of boys. Although they won only 4 of the next 9 games, they were 5ghting hard every minute. In bidding for a berth in the District Tournament, they lost to St. Louis Park. whom the gold-clad boys had previously beaten twice in conference play. Robbinsdale did not place anyone on the All-Conference Team. but it is hoped that in future years they will be honored with some laurels. Its membership includes students now attending school and also the graduates who have earned letters and made sports history in the past. One of the Club,s main purposes is to bring togeth- er high school friends at the annual spring ban- quet. The club also strives to put on a main event program during the school year. So far it has been a basketball game between the alumni and the The meeting will come to order. high school team. Plans are being made to put on more events in the future such as dances and pro- grams. Proceeds of the nineteen forty-six events are be- ing used to buy R Club pins for the graduating members. DE - F EN DEBS Under the sponsorship of Coach Mark Wood- ward and led by Captain Jack Dibble, the Robin de-Fenders won the N.W.A.A.U. wrestling meet with a total of 32 points. This gave Robbinsdale a ten point lead. The boys placed second in the Regional Wres- tling at Nlound, thereby qualifying to send 4 wres- tlers to the State Tournament. These 4 boys all made a good showing. Chuck Ofsthun placed sec- ond in the 104 pound division, Wally Roles placed first in the 121 pound division, Darwin Takkinen placed third in the 134 pound division, and Dick Wachtler placed fourth in the 166 pound division. Robbinsdale emerged in Fifth place with 15 points. During the season the Robins won eight matches and lost five. The wrestlers began by defeating U. High; they duplicated this defeat later in the sea- son. In matches with Anoka, the Robins gained two wins. and matches with Excelsior and patrick Henry gave them three wins. , C 1 v W A special event during the season was the double header with Litchheld and Excelsior on the Robinis mat. The Robin first string wrestled Litchfield and lost, but the second string wrestled Excelsior and gained a victory. The de-Fenders were ably coached by Mark Woodward, who took over the position which he left when he went into the Navy. During the sea- son, he proved that he had not lost any of his tech- nique. The boys graduating this year are Jack Dibble, Don Heath, Dick Schmidt, Harold Smith, Don Stensrud, and Dick Wachtler. This will leave the heavier divisions open next year to new men. Those not graduating include Hggh Phillips, 95 pounds; Chuck Ofsthun, 103 pounds; Eddie Katz, 112 pounds; Neil Ofsthun and Wally Roles, 120 pounds; Roger Vick, 137 pounds; Darwin Tak- kinen and Don Cooper, 133 pounds and jack Cause. 154 pounds. 41 Row 1: .4. Wayne Pitmon, a superlative hurler, led the team into action. Doing the catching chores was Ade Pitmon, a good hit- ter with two years of experience. Mike Gamble di- vided his time between first base and the pitcher's plate. Receiving the throw at Second was Bud Davis who knew how to handle the situation. Rounding that infield was Baldy Baldwin playing his third season at the hot comer. Behind the boys were Perry Pearson, Speedster of the team with a good throwing arm, Don Heath, 3 slugging out- fielder in anybodyis league, and Jack Schroeder, a good fielder who also did his share of pitching. Pressing these boys were Bill Magnuson, John Fisher and Pete Hayek. For the second time, the Lake Conference played a complete round-robin with the top teams qualifying for District tournament play along with the top teams of the Valley Conference. E. Renz took over as coach of the powerful Robins this year replacing M. Klatt. Mike stretches for a high one. 43 Every Wednesday, the roller part of the Ball Bearings, or in more familiar dialogue, the Girl Bowlers, met at the Bowling Alley for their weekly session. Much rivalry was shown among the eight teams participating in the tournament. The Bowl Legs did manage to maintain the lead throughout the season. At times the margin was slight, how- ever. The Pin Balls, Six Wonders, Slick Six, Big Six, A.O.F.M., Q.T.'s and the Robinettes of- fered keen competition and could not be easily overlooked. Carolyn Nelson proved to be a well chosen sec- retary-treasurer. It was quite a job to keep all of the money matters straight. It was agreed before the opening of the season that each girl was to pay fifty cents a week for their two games. Ten cents of this amount was put into a kitty which was divided among the teams according to their rank in the league. Vicky Ileads for a Strike The Girls Take Over 4-1 The Ball Bearings of the Robin rolled on all year almost unknown to many of us. Our athletic minded girls, however, have been out there de- fending their teams in endball, basketball, bad- minton, archery and baseball tournaments. These tournaments are played after the completion of the last class for the day. Miss V. Skartvedt advises the girls in all the ac- tivities during the year. A few of our C1.A.A. mem- bers are the proud possessors of sweaters. Points are earned for each game participated in. On Award Day, all girls having earned three hundred points are entitled to an emblem, those with six hundred, a letter and for each additional three hundred, a bar may be added to the letter. All points are accumulative. G.A.A. members look forward to Play Day which is held each spring. All G.A.A. members in the Lake District are invited to participate. These Seniors who made up the old girls club cabinet together with their advisers held weekly meetings to plan all of the pot-luck suppers, dances and take care of all other activities which are sponsored by their Club. Miss Kalma Mickelson, Miss Gladys Kettleson and Miss Valborg Skartvedt were the advisers for the group. One of the main social events of the school year is the much talked of Cotton Ball. This affair has become a tradition. After many cabinet meetings and careful planning on the part of all committees the girls had everything in readiness for the long looked forward to night of April 12. This was the night that the girls reigned supreme as only the Club members and their escorts could attend the ball. Each year the lVlarch pot-luck is looked forward to with eager anticipation. Prior to that date the new cabinet for the coming year has been selected and the girls oHicially take over. All senior cabinet members are presented with corsages in apprecia- tion of their services. Two other outstanding events of the year were the delightful Mother's Tea in December and the Senior Breakfast in May which was given in honor of the girls who were about to bid their Alma Mater farewell. This was the ahnouncement which was heard late in October and which brought some forty students to the first meeting. The theme remained the biggest problem. A committee was chosen and after several detours Chuggin' Thru was presented and accepted by the staff. Donna Mielke and Lois Cavanagh were Co-Editors Lois Caranagh and Donna Aliclke uh gei h selected as co-editors to steer the staff on the way as the actual work began. Long hours were spent in making the original dummy, mounting pictures, typing, taking pictures and the countless other jobs entailed in order to meet deadlines. At long last the ink is dry on the last page and the 1947 edition of the Robin is presented for your approval. Jlakcup Editors D. JIadden. I. JIcLean. I. Uttc'rberg m Paper 5mg a! work 1'1? mg? About fifteen mem- bers from both the Robin Tale staff apd the jour- nalism class attended. Jeanne and Dick also at- tended the Minnesota Press Convention held at Albert Lea, Minnesota.
