USS ROARK FF-1053 1987 was a year of change for the USS ROARK. She changed Commanding Officers, homeports, and entered the Naval Reserve Force. New personnel reported aboard as officer and enlisted TARS replaced their USN counterparts. And the ranks began to diminish. Crew size went from 290 to 220. Operational effectiveness, though strained, did not diminish throughout the transition. The ship steamed into San Francisco on january 10 to be formally welcomed by Mayor Diane Feinstein. We returned to San Diego a few days later, and in February we passed the Operational Propulsion Plant Examination. Shortly thereafter the Engineering Officer, Lt. Gary Piepkorn, was relieved by Lt. Bob Seybold. Spring began a flurry of operations, port visits, and special evolutions that would not end until late September. It was a tired crew that gratefully entered a Phased Maintenance Availability which would keep them at home until late January 1988. Some of the year's more notable events were Varsity Player, NGFSCSJ, BOPC-OPS, ASWOPS, a visit to Newport, Oregon. Next came Change of Command, Mazatlan, and the move to San Francisco. We finished with a visit to Canada, ASWOPS Cwith heloj, dependent's cruise, and a squadron transfer. 1987 seemed like a busy year. Facing 1988 though, it's obvious that busy is a relative term. ROARK was pushed, tested, and handed some new experiences in 1987. And she measured up, winning almost every departmental award and the Battle Efficiency E. This book cannot totally reconstruct the year. Its purpose is simply to show some of the people who make up ROARK, the places we went, the things we did. There are not pictures of everyone who was part of ROARK in '87. But they are in it, just as their presence, their touch, will always be part of ROARK. iii tit L
