USS RO RK FF 10535 USS ROARK IFF 10531 IS highly capable multi mission warship designed for surface subsurface and anti air warfare Classified as a frlgate, her primary mission is to provide escort and screening services to convoys and larger warshlps as they transit submarine infested waters With her sensors and Weaponry ROARK can detect and destroy submarines provide naval gunfire support for amphibious assault blockade enemy shipping engage enemy warshlps with gun and missiles conduct search and rescue operations and provide anti aircraft defense ROARK IS 441 feet long 47 feet wide and dlsplaces approximately 4100 tons Propulsion is provided by two 1200 psi Combustion Engineering boilers supplymg superheated steam to a Westing house turbme which delivers 35 000 horsepower to a single 15 ft. diameter propellor. She is equipped with a single rudder. ROARK'S top speed is in excess of 27 knots. Her generators produce 3,000 kilowatts of electrical power and her distilling plants produce 24,000 gallons of fresh water from the sea each day In her primary mission area of anti submarine warfare, ROARK can detect submarines using her long range sonar, and can attack them with ASROC Crocket thrown torpedoesl and tube launched torpedoes. ROARK has the capability to provide support for one LAMPS CLight Airborne Multi purpose Systeml helicopter which can drop son obouys to detect submarines, and torpedoes to destroy them. The helicopter is also used in search and rescue, transport and reconnaissance. ROARK'S 5 inchf54 caliber gun can effectively destroy surface and air targets and provide gun fire support for amphibious landings. The Basic Point Defense missile system carries 8 missiles which are utilized for self defense against air threats ROARK is also equipped with the Harpoon anti shipping missile which can attack and sink ships over the horizon ROARK IS named for the late Lieutenant William Marshall Roark Lieutenant Roark was a naval bomber pilot attached to Attack Squadron 153 aboard USS CORAL SEA ICV 431 He was shot down on 7 April 1965 while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam Keel laying for ROARK took place 2 February 1966 at Todd Shipyards in Seattle Washington Cosponsors Mrs Frank F Roark Cmotherj and Mrs James R Phillips fwidowj launched and christened ROARK on 24 April 1967 ROARK was placed in commission on 22 November 1969 The ship s company consists of 20 officers and 254 enlisted men. Since commissioning, ROARK has deployed several times to the western Pacific and saw action off the coast of Vietnam. She has carried the flag of the United States to many ports of call in virtually all parts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. ROARK has been overhauled twice since being built, once in 1974 and most recently in 1979 80. ROARK carries sufficient supplies onboard Cexcept fuell to keep her nearly 300 men and their machinery operating independently for at least 30 days. She boasts a modern dining facility which serves 3 meals a day, 365 days a year, a barber shop, ship's store, laundry a modest library and lounge.
