Reflections of a Westpac Sailing by stars to places afar, Exotic ports, we will see, Days and nights we shall spend out here, Out on the open seas. Away from our loved ones, we wish we could see, Away from our homes, where we long to be. Since that first day when we got underway, Our loved ones we left behind. Thinking of them during these long days at sea, Holds us and keeps us from losing our minds. For most of us this will be our last cruise, But for some the start of something new. Shellbacks old and new, will once again avenge, And .those slimey pollywogs will suffer . . . We will be different men on the day- we arrive . . . back home. To meet our girlfriends, children and wives you know . . . ' That in their eyes you realize There's nothing like home sweet home. - QM3 Mochimaru ., . , g e - ::':gg,.f.p-via., - P. ' - Z' . Her generators produce 3,000 kilowatts of electrical power and her distilling plants produce 24,000 gallons of fresh water from the sea each day In her primary mission area of anti submarine warfare, ROARK can detect submarines using her long range sonar, and can attack them with ASROC Crocket thrown torpedoesl and tube launched torpedoes. ROARK has the capability to provide support for one LAMPS CLight Airborne Multi purpose Systeml helicopter which can drop son obouys to detect submarines, and torpedoes to destroy them. The helicopter is also used in search and rescue, transport and reconnaissance. ROARK'S 5 inchf54 caliber gun can effectively destroy surface and air targets and provide gun fire support for amphibious landings. The Basic Point Defense missile system carries 8 missiles which are utilized for self defense against air threats ROARK is also equipped with the Harpoon anti shipping missile which can attack and sink ships over the horizon ROARK IS named for the late Lieutenant William Marshall Roark Lieutenant Roark was a naval bomber pilot attached to Attack Squadron 153 aboard USS CORAL SEA ICV 431 He was shot down on 7 April 1965 while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam Keel laying for ROARK took place 2 February 1966 at Todd Shipyards in Seattle Washington Cosponsors Mrs Frank F Roark Cmotherj and Mrs James R Phillips fwidowj launched and christened ROARK on 24 April 1967 ROARK was placed in commission on 22 November 1969 The ship s company consists of 20 officers and 254 enlisted men. Since commissioning, ROARK has deployed several times to the western Pacific and saw action off the coast of Vietnam. She has carried the flag of the United States to many ports of call in virtually all parts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. ROARK has been overhauled twice since being built, once in 1974 and most recently in 1979 80. ROARK carries sufficient supplies onboard Cexcept fuell to keep her nearly 300 men and their machinery operating independently for at least 30 days. She boasts a modern dining facility which serves 3 meals a day, 365 days a year, a barber shop, ship's store, laundry a modest library and lounge. A closed circuit television system is installed which is used for training, and for some entertainment functions during extended deployments. 5 - V -M7 V, ,, 1115. . About Roark's Namesake: LT William Marshall Roark, USN William Marshall Roark was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on October 23, 1938, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Frederick Roark. He attended Cen- tral High School, Omaha, Nebraska, prior to entering the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956. Graduated and commissioned Ensign on June 8, 1960, he subsequently advanced in rank to that of Lieutenant, to date from June 1, 1964. Following graduation from the Naval Academy in 1960, he remained there for duty in the Engineering Department until September that year, then had flight training at the Naval Air Basic Training Command, Pensacola, Florida. From October 1961 until March 1962 he had further training at the Naval Air Advanced Training Command, Corpus Christi, Texas. Designated Naval Aviator on April 9, 1962, he joined Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE and in December that year transferred to Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED FIFTY- THREE, operating off the USS CORAL SEA. He was killed in action on April 7, 1965 off the shore of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam following a bombing mission from the USS CORAL SEA. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation for the latter follows in part: Distinguished Flying Cross: For heroism . . . on April 7, 1965 as a jet attack pilot in Attack Squadron ONE FIVE THREE, aboard the USS CORAL SEA KCVA-432, during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Viet Nam. Completing several successful attacks against military targets along a coastal highway in North Viet Nam when his flight was taken under concentrated fire by numerous antiaircraft and automatic gun positions, Lieutenant ROARK commenced an attack against the gun emplacements despite the withering antiaircraft fire directed at him. When his aircraft was struck by hostile fire, he flew his disabled craft toward the water and successfully ejected, following which he was fired upon continuously during his parachute descent, and after reaching the water. The intense barrage of antiaircraft, automatic weapons and mortar fire directed onto the water by the enemy prevented helicopter rescue of Lieutenant ROARK, who had been mortally wounded ... In addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart Medal, Lieutenant ROARK had the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal fViet Nam area of operationsl. 6 No two WestPac cruises are the same. For some, it is a first time eventg for others it is another in a long list of cruises. ROARK'S 1983 WestPac was indeed different. We spent 85 percent of our time at sea. We traveled over 50,000 nautical miles. During all this time, morale stayed up. The ship got better and the crew got tougher. ROARK sailors are known for their can do spirit. Where others complain, ROARK sailors say so what, let's get the job done. And they did just that, from the Aleutians to the Persian Gulf and to Central Amer- icag to those who made this cruise, Well Done! H. L. Webb xx Our mail is where? 1 , r' I Commanding Officer CDR H. Here we spent 5 days of sightseeing, tours and just rest and relaxation. Among the many sights to seeg the one in particular was the ever active volcano, Mt, Sakura-jima. It billowed its smoke the few days we were there. The townspeople were more than happy faces. Many offered to take us on personal tours of the city itself. It was a great port for everyone. 5 11 S I A hillside view of Kagoshima. Hamming it up down town. This has nothing on RQARIQS yn Soup' Sakura-lima letting out some steam. Its populace lives in a curious cross between its Hispanic past and the Ways of the Western World. A person need not wander much further than Magsaysay Drive to enjoy an inexpensive, but exciting night of entertainment. The people welcome the Seventh Fleet, and a person feels at home in no time at all. Subic Bay is the major refurbishing port for the ships of the Seventh Fleet while on Westpac. Ample facilities for repair, supplies, and recreation for the ship and its crew, make this port a must for all deployments. i I 1 I I,lvf?.?,l What's with the jam'?', 62 No thanks, l'm trying to cut down.
