Glaser Providing an outstanding professional staff and selecting modern and durable equipment, the BOARD OF EDUCATION strove to meet R-B's ever-changing personnel and maintenance needs. Under the leadership of their new president, Mr. Harry Bamford, the Board members discussed current problems and made decisions concerning the school's present and future at their monthly meetings. Assisted by Miss Curtis and Dr. Brown, the Board did its usual capable job of supervising the selection and upkeep of the school's equipment. Again this year, a big project was the sponsorship of adult evening classes which offered a curriculum of both academic and prac- tical subiects ranging from ceramics to chemistry. Gale E. Gross Y Mrs. Rigmor Kracht James C. MacGowan Rvbeff W- MU Pl Y Frank Spachman Jr. Page 4 It is with gratitude for their many hours of dedicated service and for their many achieve- ments, the effects of which have left a lasting mark on the lives of many young people, that we dedicate this book to Mr. Hadek and Mr. MacGowan. Mr. Hodek began his long term of service on the School Board in 1943. His resource- fulness, ability as an organizer, willingness to listen to the ideas of others, and working knowl- edge of how to put the precepts of democracy into practice became immediately apparent, and within a year of his becoming a member of the Board, Mr. Hodek became its president. Since then, the enrollment has more than doubled and the number of the faculty has increased from thirty-eight to seventy-seven. The stadium was built soon after Mr. Hodek became President of the Board, and the new addition was completed a few years before his retirement. Mr. MacGowan served as a member of the School Board for sixteen years. During this time he took an active part in the civic affairs of Hollywood. Symbolizing his fine contri- butions in the field of human relations, Mr. MacGowan has received the Brotherhood Award and also the Yard Award through the National Conference of Christians and Jews. In his capacity as member of the School Board, Mr. MacGowan entered into all projects enthusiastically and as a former teacher, now retired, he was of tremendous assistance in making the plans for the new addition to R-B. The retirement of these men in the fall of 'I956 and the spring of 1957, respectively, was a tremendous loss to the school and community. programs and policies Page 5 ml.. A school is a thing of many dimensions. Most obvious, but least important, are the dimensions of the buildings and grounds. The width and length and height of a school provide the space in which the students learn and mature. Th'ere are, however, greater widths. The high school seeks to cultivate in the pupils a width of interest, a width of knowledge, a width of ex- perience. The richness of life is a product of this broadening of lite. The lengths too are not measured alone in yards, feet and inches. There are also the length of patience, the span of tolerance, the courage- ous length of endurance, the length of quiet perseverence. ln this dimension too, the River- side-Brookfield High School would help its stu- dents grow. Height or depth are also human, as well as geometric dimensions. Depth of understanding and depth of purpose, combined with height of aspiration, height of vision, and height of faith are levels without which life would be a two dimensional wasteland. The school would seek for each of you, its pupils, the fullest of growth in the many dimen- sions of your life. George W. Brown respect for dedicated 5 f Edna A. Michael . . . Dean of Girls: I B. Flaring flames, the Queen and her lovely court, a spirited team, the stream- ers, confetti, and cheers of Beat Hins- dale all combined to make HOMECOM- ING '56 one of the biggest and best R-B has ever seen. The flurry of activities began on Friday night with a pep rally and the crowning of Queen Lois Johnson and her court, Carol Maxant, Barbara Oechslin, Judy Nielsen, and Marge Jehlik by football Co-captains Denny Paloucek and Doc Sazama. embracing The traditional snake dance and bonfire officially completed the first evening of celebration, but many R-B-ites worked feverishly until the wee hours to complete their paper masterpieces for the parade. Saturday morning a winding pa- rade of floats displayed the talent and ingenuity of these hard-working artists. ln the afternoon, rousing cheers rang through the clear, crisp air as the Bulldogs went down fight- ing against a strong Hinsdale eleven. That evening, R-B's eager fans joined together to climax the swirl of activity at the Ra-Ra Ramble. Gilbert. This year for the first time, a BOYS' GLEE CLUB was formed. Its members met one school night each week and through concentration and hard work, prepared a medley of numbers, some of which they presented at the January Music Sponsors' meeting in their first public appearance. This group provided musical entertainment for various school activities. For the first time, the orchestra oined the A Cappella choir to present the C ristmas concert. They also pre- sented their own concert in the spring. Soloists and ensembles from the orchestra competed in the district and state music contests and represented the. school at the All-State Orchestra in Springfield. Several orchestra members received scholar- ships from the Music Sponsors to music camp at the University of Illinois. The strains of morning practices could be heard as diligent band members devel- oped the needed rhythm of spirited ar- rangements. The band also participated in the West Suburban Conference Music Festival held this year at R-B. This inspiring perform- ance highlighted the band's activities. The thirty-six members worked diligently, trying to produce an outstanding yearbook to equal the All-American book of the preceding year. The staff met daily during fourth-fifth hour and also after school on Thursdays to plan and work on the book. However, the boxscore doesn't tell the complete Bulldog story. It can't convey the tenseness felt by R-B-ites as their team almost downed the highly rated Glenbard five. lts figures fail to express the incredulity felt on the court and in the stands when R-B lost to the Demons from Maine in the last second of play. It misses the wave of desperation prevailing when the gun sounded leaving the score favoring Downers Grove by one point. Perhaps this season can best be referred to as a year of learning, not only for the squad, but for the students who learned a loyalty to a team, not for their wins or losses, but for the fight and drive which they displayed in every game. Although the JUNIOR VARSITY BASKET- BALL TEAM displayed the same record as the varsity as far as not winning a game, they showed determination and drive, commend- able in any team, regardless of scores. The experience they gained in their various tilts proved to be a means of developing more than basketball skill. Practicing with patience, drilling for accuracy, and planning for the future, the R-B FROSH-SOPH BASKET- BALL TEAM finished the '56-'57 basketball season with a seven wins-thirteen losses record. The team never seemed to fulfill the potential which they displayed at the onset of the season, however, the experience which they gained and the periodic brilliance which they showed seemed to indicate the possibility of a highly suc- cessful varsity squad in the near future. The FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM showed a great deal of promise and finished the season with a 5-9 record. Their proven abilities showed that they will be a strengthening influence on the next yeor's frosh-soph squad. striving consistantly for Freshman Basketball - FIRST ROW: Manager Paul O'Sullivan, Milan Bursach, Jon Fistonich, Glen Hess, Brian Zalenka, Ron Lukas, Allen Kasper, Evan Fie, Roger Stedronsky, Frank Urban, Ronald Kodidek, Robert Stuchal, Sidney Goodwin, Don Cox, Dennis Cermak, Gary Krogh, Mayo Walcott, Tom Konicek, Charles Poskocil, Dick Quitsch, Rich Prochaska, Jack Bjorn, George Rosicky, Gerald Incrocci, Tom Vales, Ronald Waitek, Harry Marshall, Glen Metelmann, Manager Bill Vines. Honorary Captain for Mr. Sander's Varsity squad was Marv Getty and for Mr. Napier's Frosh-Soph squad was Neil Butler. The season's score for the Varsity was 4-13 and for the Frosh- Soph was 3-13. Marv Getty and Herb Lawrence honored R-B by winning third place in the sectional wrestling tournament at Reavis High School. Two members of R-B's team, Marv Getty and Gary Doolen were named to the West Suburban All-Conference team. Herb Lawrence and Marv Getty demonstrate a difficult hold. Smashing a serve across the court, prac- ticing long hours in the sun, and using close teamwork in a doubles match were components of another season for R-B's TENNIS TEAM. The '57 squad, dominated by underclassmen, worked diligently to build a strong team for future years. Coached by Mr. Boley, the team displayed durability and skill. The cracking sound ofthe bat, the thrilling sensation of a home run, and the suspense when the bases are loaded with two outs all made the '56 season a fascinating one for R-B's BASEBALL teams. The varsity team had a tie record of seven wins and seven losses, while the trosh-soph squad scored four wins against eight losses. The 1956 season found the varsity golfers, under the coaching of Mr. Harnstrom, in eighth place in the confer- ence while the frosh-soph team finished in seventh place. Working as a combined team, the varsity and frosh-soph golfers defeated Reavis in a non-conference match, and the faculty golfers recouped the previous year's loss by defeat- ing R-B's golf team in the annual Faculty versus Students contest.
