But in spite of our enthusi- asm we were just green freshies and the initiation into the hustle and bustle of high school life was almost too much for us. However, we eagerly entered into the many activities with the hope that we might win an Oscar, We unreeled our first social affair with the annual Fresh- man Frolic. Even as freshmen we began to look forward to the happenings of our sports world as this year the upperclass- men were District Champs in basketball, and we also had hopes. Bob Slinker was elected to the position of class president, Bob Bird as vice-presi- dent, Elma Mae Mauney as secretary, and Bob McClelland as treasurer. These offi- cers directed us through our stand-in year. Sophomores 'I946-47 Now we were sophomores and what proud and important creatures we were because we had put aside our green col- ors. This year we would be important actors in our own right. Seven of our class appeared in the cast of the operetta Bells of Beaujolois, five of our girls were elected to the Sharclub Senate, and four of us helped to place THE ROUSER in the First National Honor Rating again. With the S50 that we had earned as freshmen tor a successful magazine cam- paign we put on our own class party, The 49'ers Rush. We had made a good showing in the Citizens of Tomorrow broadcast and we produced a successful all-sophomore floor show for our party. Little Jack Hagan was our chosen leader with Dave Giuntoli, Barbara Ella- cott, and Bea Benda as his helpful assist- ants. Left to Right: F. Hajek, J. Hag n T Juniors 1947-48 At last . . . upperclassmen with the realization that we must leave an even greater m-ark than in our previous years. During the summer R-B had seen many changes. Not only were our braver girls wearing the New Look but, our cam- pus had it with new trees, shrubbery, and sidewalks and the stadium was fast be- coming a reality. We sent our tennis team and J. Hagan, our 880 man, down state. How proud we were of our former cl-ass president when he returned with a second place showing. We helped initiate the first annual talent show and provided besides other numbers a classy chorus line of girls. Strictly Formal, our class play was a big success. Our class officers this year were Ken Flaherty, James Horalek, Betty Mealer, Arnold Wackrow, and Tony Heller. We decked out in all our glory when we honored the seniors at our prom held at the Acacia Country Club. At that time we began thinking about next year and when the seniors donned their caps and gowns, we realized that the end was near -just one more year. Seniors 1948-49 Here we are as sensible seniors with our freshmen timidity and our sopho- more cocksureness a phase in the past. There were many changes that had taken place at R-B. Our teachers inaugurated a workshop week, the New Look was no longer new, we were eating 35c lunch- es, and we were again proud of our basketball teams. On bow day we wore the traditional white and we proudly re- membered when we had looked up to the seniors. The Masque and Wig play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay expressed our gay and carefree feelings. Leading us through this year was a foursome of cap- able males, namely, Jack Hagan, Ken Flaherty, Frank Hajek, and Dick Kin- naird. Then our dream came true, we graduated. We were saddened to think that we would leave our friends but with new hope and encouragement from our directors for the life ahead, we squared our shoulders and went out to become great actors and actresses in whatever the future held for us. These past four years truly were The Best Years of Our Lives. Page 25 Seniors of 1949 Agonath Anderle Anderson Andorf Anthony Bailey Ballard Belsan, D. Barnick, L. Barnick, R. It can be termed a suc- cessful season so far as saying that our boys scored more points this year than in the last two years combined. Team morale and fighting spirit were never better. Although the team was one of the lightest in the conference, they always left a dent in the opposition. The first team usually consisted of Bob Jarm and Glen Frenzen at the ends, Wally Soderstrom and Binky Oetting at the tackles, with Jack Trinko and Dick Lange holding the guard positions, Bill Lud- low at center. Bud Horalek was our left half, Herb Berger at fullback, either Hob Rardin or Frank Sikorski at right half, and Skip Hill or Bud lsraels at quarterback. Arnie Wackrow and Ken Flaherty were hurt early in the season and up until then had been regulars. Their losses undoubtedly hurt the team. Horalek, Trinko, and Oetting were voted to the All-Conference teams and Trinko was placed on the All-Suburban. With l4 lettermen returning, Mr. Newton is looking forward to a good season next year. Although the record was not as good as previous seasons the number of games they did win was remarkable because of the inexperience of the team. The backfield, consisting of loas, Matook, Jirik, and Shortt, was exceptionally small but what they lacked in size, they made up for in speed. The line on the other hand was exceptionally large and iust as hard to move. lt was led by co-'captains John Damore and Don Seps. Damore, who proved to be one of the finest line backers in Frosh-Soph history, was their bulwark at center. Seps and Firley were the guards and Hale and Woeltje flanked the line. Dave Meier also saw quite a bit of action at end. Jerry Ridley and Nick Cariello played con- siderably in the backfield. The team's finest game was played against a much bigger Mor- ton team. lt was a see-saw affair until George Matook took off on a 70-yard run and the only touchdown of the game. The team finished in fourth place and is looking forward to a good season in l949. BACK ROW: T. Stolfa, R. Manley, R. Ort, R. Buckley, J. Fazio, D. Meier. FOURTH ROW: B. Celfa, B. Erickson, A. Shares the Crown R-B fans this year saw one of the tinest teams ever to represent the school in basket- ball. Coached by Barney Dudley, the squad had a season's record ot l9 wins and 6 losses. As a team they were constantly rated in the upper 25 teams in the state. The squad participated in two tournaments during the regular playing season. The first tournament was held at De Kalb State Teach- ers' College in which the team captured second place, the regional tournament was held at Morton, here too the squad took second, losing to a strong Oak Park Club. By virtue of taking second places in the two tournaments the team was awarded trophies for each contest. The boys who made up the championship squad were Jack Crowe and Ken Flaherty at forward, Bob Jarm at center, captain Bud Ho- ralek and Skip Hill at the guards. Jack Crowe was selected on the All-Conference team, All- Suburban, on the third All-Chicagoland team, and honorable mention on the All-State squad. Ken Flaherty, selected the most valuable man on the squad by his teammates, was on the sec- ond All-Conference team along with Bud Ho- ralek and Bob Jarm. Skip Hill, who is captain- elect for next year's squad, received honorable mention on the All-Conference squad. The team was rounded out by such regulars as Jack Hagan, Dick Zolan, Dick Stevens, Glenn Fren- zen, and Walter Soderstrom, Page 56 RR RR RR SR R R R 'R 'R 'R 'R R R R 'R R R R R R ER F 'R VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES: -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B -B TR-B 'llR-B 'l R-B 42 New Trier 45 Morton 52 Argo 4l Thornton 40 Maine 58 York 4l La Grange 55 Genoa 4l West Aurora 38 Arlington Heights 39 De Kalb 54 Downers Grove 34 Hinsdale 30 Glenbard 33 Paris 57 Maine 39 York 72 La Grange 46 Downers Grove 45 Hinsdale 54 West Aurora 53 Glenibard 59 Argo 55lOvertimeiLa Grange 40 Oak Park De Kalb Tournament Non-Conference Games Regio.nal Tournament BACK ROW: W. Bull Pups take Second This year's squad was a surprise to everyone including their coach, Mr. Shuey. The boys settled down after a few losses to really play some fine basketball. They wound up the sea- son with lO wins and 8 losses which placed them in second place in the conference. Coach Shuey's first squad usually consisted of Woelt- je and Ridley at the forwards, Shortt and Giv- ens at center, and Damore and loas at the guards. The ability to win a lot of their games was due to their tine spirit and willingness to work together. The team next year will be without the serv- ices of Heun and Huebner, along with the regulars just mentioned. These boys will be playing varsity ball under Mr. Dudley. The boys who were regulars this year and will make up the major portion of the squad next year will be Bayag, Westholm, Beaudoin, Van Cura, Garrigan, Buecking, Sykora, and Buckley. Coach Shuey thinks that with these boys he will have just as good a team as he had this year. The course itself is two miles in length and winds along the River and through the Forest Preserve. The meets were run on Satur- days during the halfs of the frosh-soph foot- ball games. The top runner of the squad was George Brixie who ran l7t'h out of 63 entries in the conference and the district state champion- ship. The other runners who usually made up the first five were co-captains Joe Svoboda and Don Koijane, Bob Anderson, Joe Phillips, and Phil Van Erden. The team next season will have four return- ing lettermen, namely, George Brixie, Phil Van Erden, Joe Phillips, and John Elftman. With these boys and the help of Ken Picha, Ken Krejcik, Bob Klovstad, and Dick Vitek, the team is looking toward a good season. The invitational meet held on the River course is one of the biggest meets of the year. Last year ten schools were entered. The trophy was award-ed to Harrison Technical High School of Chicago and ribbons were awarded to the first twenty competitors. Coach Carlson hopes that he has a fine turn- out of boys so R-B will have a strong squad to represent them in cross country next fall. BACK ROW: Mr. C. Carlsen, D. Koiiane, P. Van Erd FRONT ROW: J. Page 62 ennis Last year racketeers finished a successful season with I2 wins and 4 losses. The excellent playing of Hoffman, Seibert, Freitag, Reed, and Stevens carried the team to the conference title, the district, and a place downstate. This year a new system is being initiated by the conference to determine the champion- ship. Both the dual meets and the conference tournament will determine the winner by points. This year the good crop of frosh-soph boys will have a chance to display their talents as frosh-soph tennis has become an official sport with a regular schedule. Mr. Thompson finds the team faced with a trying year as there are only two returning lettermen: Stevens and Luttenbacher. They will be bolstered by Giuntoli, Ludlow and Mills. BACK ROW: H. Rardin, D. Novy, J. O'Brien, VM. Mills, E. Schmuckal, J. Harvie, J. Teborek, Mr. Thompson. FRONT ROW: R. Sherman, D. Wooden, R, Jiral, D. Giuntoli, R. Stevens, C. Luttenbacher, W Ludlow. Page 63 VARSITY TRACK This year's squad will be led by two boys, Jack Hagan, half mile, and Jim Horalek, broad jump and low hurdles. Both of these boys went downstate last year because of their wins in the district. Hagan's best time for the half mile is l.57:9 which set a new mark at the confer- ence meet last year. He was also selected on the All-American High School track team, sponsored by Look Magazine. The boys that make up this year's squad are hurdle men Skip Hill and Bob Jarm, middle distance men Lloyd lsrael-s, Joe Ferrier, Ted Palmer, and Gene Sovereign, milers Jack Crowe and George Brixie, weightmen George Oetting, Cochrane Chase, and Milt Svejnar. Both the district and conference track meets are held on our home track. The district on Saturday, May l4, and the conference on Thursday, May 26. Coach Newton has a strong squad and should put several men downstate this year. FROSH-SOPH TRACK The good practice that the frosh-soph boys have been putting in under the assistance of their coach, Mr. Stanger, is bound to mean points. These boys are being offered a good start to their careers as varsity men. Page 64 lf the frosh-soph live up to their R-B tradi- tion they will certainly offer keen competition in the conference. This year's outstanding contenders are Cul- bertson, Meier, Knack, Matook, Norman, and Stattin. As they move outdoors the boys will start lining up for the Frosh-Soph Invitational and Conference Meets. GOLF This year R-B's golf team was built around three boys, Frank and Tom Stolfa, who are brothers, and Joe Svoboda. All three boys shoot in the low eighties. During the season ll matches were played in dual meets begin- ning with a match played on April 2lst with York High School of our own West Suburban Conference. The team went into the district on May l3th, on May 25th the team played in the suburban matches, both matches were played at Timber Trails Country Club. During the year the team played on such courses as Glen Oak, Ruth Lake, La Grange, and Park Ridge Country Clubs. Coach Jenkins if given enough support from underclassmen and former letter- men is looking toward a fine season next year. VARSITY TRACK BACK ROW: Mr. Stanger, G. Oetting G. Brixie, D. The team's pow- er was focused on Shillington at 95 pounds, Kracke and Schander at 105, March at 115, Weiss and Harvie at 125, Kinnaircl at 135, Triinko at 145, Chase at 155, Mers at 165, Pav- lat at 175, and Oetting at heavyweight. This is the second consecutive year that an R-B man has taken a place downstate. Chase placed fourth. This is also the first year that four R-B men have gone to state matches. All told the hours of practice in the new stadium, the coaching of Mr. Sanders, and the willingness of the boys brought about a most satisfying season. Baseball Five returning lettermen and a host of frosh-soph and Junior American Legion ball players formed a nucleus for the i949 baseball squad. Coach Ellingson built his team around the returning lettermen, captain Jerry Kuchta, George Tomecek, Wally Soderstrom, Herb Berger, and Ronnie Kuchta, bolstered by frosh- soph players Glenn Frenzen, Wally Baur, How- ie loas, Bruce Hale, Wayne Meinhart, John Damore, Eugene Givens, Jack Rouse, and Jack Brenn, Also back from last year's squad are Bob Anderson, Max Light, Bill Vrba, and Jim Irons. Ron Jirik, Gene Hill, Nick Cariello, Frank S-hortt, and Joe Ourada, who played Legion ball last summer, and other promising sophomores complete the squad. R-B opened the season with a veteran team that had played together all through most of the previous summer. It was considered to be the team to beat because of pitching strength and past records. This season, teams were allowed to play only thirteen games, twelve of these were regular conference games. The lone practice game was a slight improvement over the limit of twelve games imposed the year before, but it is hoped that the conference officials will re- lent and allow enough practice games to im- prove the calibre of conference play. In addi- tion to these games, R-B played in the Illinois State Baseball Tournament. A schedule of six giames for the freshman- sophomore baseball squad was one of the largest so far. Every team was scheduled to play every other conference team once this year in frosh-so-ph baseball. SEATED D Chandos J Hoffman THE R0 ER presents the The 1949 Rouser cast was headed by Stu- dent Editor, Don Koijane, and Faculty Sponsor, Miss Ina E. Leland. Various new methods of organization were tried this year. To begin with the staff was divided into senior members and underclass- men, These two groups met alternating Thurs- days from September through March. Previ- ously the editor-in-chief was selected by the sponsor but this year the staff selected their own editor. The staff was then divided into seven divisions corresponding to the seven sections of the annual and a senior chairman and co-chairman were responsible for each section. The underclassmen were largely re- sponsible for the captioning and identification of pictures. A new ruling was also inaugurated whereby three unexcused absences automati- cally dropped a member from the staff. lt was necessary to drop one member only, The yearbook wasn't all work and no play for we started the year with a dinner party at Carders and the movie A Date with Judy to put us in the mood of our theme. The follow- ing month we sponsored Stage Door Can- teen to raise some money and to please the student body. We also sold ice cream bars several nights for the same reasons. Our an- nual Christmas party was as exciting as ever but the Christmas fairy failed to reveal one gift! Our big social event of the spring is still in the future for at present we are making plans for dinner and a play downtown. We are especially grateful to Virginia Pta- cek, our efficient typist, and to Frank Bezkost- ny, former R-B-ite, for catching our pictures at our most pleasing moments. To Miss Eliza- beth Ellsworth, who headed the art staff: to J. George Vance, our financial advisor, to John Roche of Root Studios, to Frank Lange of St. Hedwig's Printery, and to A. A. Barrett of Pon- tiac, we owe thanks for their co-operation and guidance in helping to produce this book. On this balmy spring day in March we are getting most anxious to unreel for you the stir- ring events of the school year, l948-l949. It is an organization which is made up of student representatives and is supervised by faculty members. The council handles matters which they think would better our school. This year the school council sponsored an- other talent show. This show was given at two schools in the Western Conference District in exchange for the ones two different schools brought to R-B. This year we had talent shows from Hinsdale and Maine, we sent our show Page 74 Council troupe to Glenbard and La Grange. There was also a night performance of this talent show. The proceeds for this performance went into a fund for continuing aid to the adopted schools in' France. As is the custom, the council sponsored three dances: the fall dance, the winter party, and the spring stag party. All R-B students feel our council deserves a round of applause for making this school year more enjoyable. The Riverside-Brookfield Chapter of the National Honor Society is an organization which gives recognition to those students who have excelled in scholarship. B e c o m i n g a member of this society is the highest honor a high school student can receive. The selection of the candidates is computed upon a point system based upon scholarship records, participation in extra-curricular activ- ities, and daily attitude at school. This society meets monthly with Miss Bare as sponsor. The main activities of the year in- clude the initiation ceremony and tea, decora- tion of the trees at Christmas time, and the annual commencement day dinner. This year, the Honor Society tried to in- crease its activities by sponsoring a pep assem- bly. They also held dances in the school cafe- teria after some of the home basketball games. On entering into this organization the ini- tiates take the following pledge which best exemplifies the purpose and ideals of the so- ciety: On my honor as a member of the Riverside-Brookfield Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, I will do my best to uphold the ideals of char- acter, scholarship, leadership, and service. I will be fair and square in my dealings with all. l will serve without thought of personal glory, ational Honor ociety BACK ROW: B. Wooden, R. Lange, G. Robinson, T. Harris, K. Kessel, H. Grench. Helen Bunta played the part of the dramatic Miss Skinner and Lois Gabrisch portrayed the part ot the tlightly Emily Kimbrough. The play is concerned about the two young girls' trip from America to France in l923. Jim Laas as Dick Winters and Dick Lange as Leo McEvog supply the romantic inter- est typical ot most ocean voyages. Some of the favorite scenes were Cornelia's discovery that she had the measles, Emily's confession of mur- der, and bunk-bed scene between the girls, and the episode connected with Cardinal Richelieu's bed bugs. The actual dresses ot l923 brought back many memories to the audi- ence. , Our Hearts Were X43 Girls with I.Q.'s under 7 years of age: Not allowed Page 86 E The Black Ba is always turning u ef wil we few. The play was centered around the pro- duction of Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra by a drama class in an Eastern university. Mr. Bach, the director of the play, imported a Broadway actress named Prudence Mason, to play the role of Cleo- patra. Anthony and Cleopatra Prudence was sought after by a l-lolly- wood agent who wanted her to sign a mo- vie contract. But her boy friend Arthur, who was opposed to the theater, wanted Prudence to return to New York with him. Claire Carter, Prudence's best friend, was called upon to help. Matters became worse and conflicts arose between the Hollywood agent, Claire, and Arthur as to whether Prudence would go to Hollywood or marry Arthur. Two Page 90 The Orchestra Our orchestra under the direction ot Mr Newmark this year provided the students and faculty ot R B with a multitude ot excellent music lt presented tirst rate assemblies and concerts at both the Riverside and Brook tield grade schools The orchestra tried to interest students ot the grade schools in the different instruments so that the students will want to take part in the orchestra when they come to R B The orchestra and band presented the spring concert May 27 This program always highlights the year s work lt was presented for the public with many excellent soloists and a good supply ot both classical and popular music. Mr. Newmark has had much experience in playing and in teaching all instruments. lt has been necessary for him to write out many ot the pieces as the group lacked in the knowledge of instrumentation. Since the programs have been such a success in R-B, the band and orchestra have a fine reputation in the com- munity. The Band Throughout the year the band has given us pep and music under the direction of Mr. Newmark. To highlight some of our football games, the drum major and majorettes led the band in various numbers which created good sports- manship and school spirit. As in former years, the band members presented concerts at both Riverside and Brook- field grammar schools. The members studied orchestral and band music and as was illustrated at the combined band and orchestra spring concert, offered music to fit various tastes. Modern alterations in the music department might be given part of the credit for the fine work displayed. The band room was sound proofed and is now accessible by means ofa newly located door. Fluorescent lighting was in- stalled and greatly adds to the fine practice surroundings. The fine co-operation of each member ot the band helped to make this year's work one we shall always re- member, Back Row: M. Prokupek, G. Gielow, D Mitch, C. Walleen, B. Anderson, K. Barnick J. Page 91 Pride and Prejudice PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, adapted from Jane Austen's novel, by Jane Kendall was very successfully presented on May 13 and 14. The three-act comedy was under the direction of Miss Shipley. Jane, Elizabeth, and Lydia are three of Mrs. Bennet's marriageable daughters. Jane, the sweet-tempered one of the family, does not prove to be a problem. Flirtatious Lydia elopes with a penniless-but handsome-young officer. But Elizabeth is rather critical and when her clergyman cousin comes to court her, she brushes him off without a second glance. Mama is frantic! Then Jane falls deeply in love with the wealthy Mr. Bingley who is a real catch, and it looks as if an affair is possible between Elizabeth and Mr. Bing- ley's friend, Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy is a proud young man, and is shocked by Mama's vulgar attempts at matchmaking. He not only whisks himself off to London, but takes Mr. Bingley with him-before he is ensnared. Jane is heartbroken, and pines away until she becomes ill. Elizabeth is enraged that such an injusti-ce should be done dear, sweet Jane. And then Mr. Darcy comes back to propose to Elizabeth against his better judgment. After several battles over Elizabeth's pride and Darcy's prejudice, they, Jane and Mr. Bing- ley, are re-united. Mrs. Bennet is delighted in having three daughters married as now she can concentrate on her other two daughters. The goal of this year's Clarion was to report the news as it hap- pencd, to have a variety of people's names appearing in each issue, and to have more pictures and cartoons presented for our enjoyment. The Clarion Page 94 What a wonderful weekend! The bon- fire, parade, football game, and dance totaled a fitting climax to the football season of l948. Festivities were launched at the bon- fire at which pep talks, music, snake dancing, and finally the announcement of the identity of the queen and her attendants were crowded into this one eventful evening. Saturday morning, the parade, longer than ever before, wound its way through the nearby villages. The Hi-Y float was awarded first prize, Pro Merito second Homecoming Q Self-explanatory S. Borst, and P. Nelson prize, GAA. third prize, and Spanish Club honorable mention. Even though the R-B heavyweight foot- ball team was defeated that afternoon in their tussle with Hinsdale, spirits were not dampened! Clever formations by the band, and the presentation of the queen completed the afternoon agenda. The weekend celebration was climaxed by the dance that night. Highlights of the evening were the talent laden floor show and the crowning of the queen and her attendants. Congratulations to C. Cook, J.
