At the same time, however it's one of the most important aspects of our school. It is the motivation, the energy, and the face that really makes our school go. You feel it when they play our fight song, yet you can't reach out and touch it. lt's there on a student's face when someone speaks against our school. It lights up the might when the team wins, the band gets division I rating, or the play comes off just right. It is the final difference that sets us apart from all others. They did a lot of fund raisers such as, selling pizzas, working concessions, taking donations and selling malts at Wrestling Sectionals. This was all in preparation for their trip to Washington D.C. While in Washington, the group took a tour of the White House, attended seminars. talked to Representa- tives, and met a lot of interesting people. Many that attended say they are ready for the trip back next year. Mr. Lancaster said he was really happy with the ten students that went and looks forward to next year also. of . Organizations 23 STUDE T LEADERS The student council is selected by voting the students in their year bracket that will do a good job in sponsoring their classmates. The student council kept themselves very busy with their many activi- ties they organized through the I982-83 school year. During homecoming season they sold black and gold pins saying Homecoming . Another activity the council did was to sell jewel- ry, which was a great success and the students like the jewelry very well. To continue, they had an ac- tivity for the young children in elementary, which was a big wheel race that was held in the high school parking lot. Again the student council had an annual sweetheart day, which you have a choice of buying a flower, paper heart with a candy kiss, or a valentine lollipop for your sweet- heart. ln December they orga- nized a movie called Taps , which was held in the gym along with the annual blood drive in which students from Riverdale, of age, gave blood along with adults from the surrounding area. All in all the student council had a very busy and exciting I9S2-S3 school year. 24 Organizations i F if J A ,. 5 g i Y I 51' Q In sir k fi: Hai ' QN X ,S -s .. Soph. Coach M. Michel. Varsity Coach J. Lancaster. This season was filled with many different challenges. Greeting squad of 34 19th-I2thQ in November, I was aware of the tremendous u range of physical strength. experience and youth represented on this squ Some boys had improved their strength. others had only hoped that nal would do it for them. Not being able to change the physical developm quick enough, practices were from 3:00'6:00 during November stress techniques and conditioning. Our first meet was a disaster at Prophetstown, forfeiting two weights a three boys not making weight on their scale. This was a very early meet for and the squad looked bad. During December the squad wrestled mi better but still lost matches due to forfeiting I32 and l38 weight divisic The squad placed 2nd out of a field of I2 at Erie and 3rd at Stillman Val out of I6 teams. The boys had gained confidence to place that high 2 added to their belief that we were becoming a competitive squad. During January the squad wrestled very well in dual meets and plan third in the tough Genseo Invitational Tournament. There were several gc matches including wins over Amboy 30'23, Moline 25-25, close losses Rock Island and l.l.T.H.S. 26-26-Coschampions of the Western Big 6 Com ence. Riverdale placed fourth in the conference and set a school record defeating Rockridge 69-0 for most points scored in a dual meet. With only four seniors from the starting squad, the outlook for n season should be very good. Remember the lack of power really hurt against several opponents, so it is an absolute must that the young rr returning are determined to work hard in weight training, not depending only nature to bring about improvement. I wish to thank Coach Michel for another strong coaching year in wh he was willing to give of himself and time above what assistant Coacl throughout the state are willing to do. lt may be impossible to find somec equal in knowledge and devotion to the boys and the sport. l would like to thank the Riverdale Board of Education, Administrati and staff for their support to this past season. A special thank you extended to Dorothy Palmer and Zo Clendenin for their loyal support a help in preparing papers and programs for the squad. Varsity Coach, J. Pom-Pons 67 PLAY BALL For many years now, Riverdale High School has been the chief supplier of talent for the summer American Legion baseball team sponsored by all three American Legion Posts of Upper Rock Island County. This is the reason the Legion team adopted the Riverdale Ram Mascot as its own, along with serving as the school's main representative to the newly-formed 3-Rivers Sum- mer Baseball League, sponsored by the Legions and towns who have high school teams in the actual 3-Rivers athletic confer- ence. This past season the Rams played a very tough Quad Cities and Legion schedule in addition to the 3-Rivers schedule and finished with a respectable I7 win and 23 defeat overall record. But the highlight of the season came when the Rams defeated arch rival Erie by the score of 6 to 4 in the 3-Rivers league season finale to cinch the league's first baseball championship. The Rams in taking the top spot posted an impressive I2 win and 5 defeat league record. When Riverdale High School teacher Ted Murphy joined the Legion Rams coaching staff, talks were vigor- ously renewed about the possibility of forming an interscholastic Spring Baseball Team that would represent Riverdale in high school competition around the area. The team would play as an independent and compete against schools both from Iowa and Illinois who have baseball as part of their total athletic program. 68 Baseball I. left to right: Coach Murphy, Todd Thornbloom, Shawn Wildermuth, Craig Casillas. After other years of having quite a few assemblies we decided to center this page totally on that subject. Unfortunately the only sign of progress in this area has been a few pep rallies. What happened to all the others? Take a look back into the past and see: The Navy, Army. and Freedom Jam Bands, The Theatrical and Choral Groups, The seventy-seven year old basketball trick shot artist, Junior Achievement, etc.: could these be gone forever? Who is in charge of getting these back? Assemblies are supposed to get students away from the everyday, 5 day a week, hum-drum of books. But, there has been little done in this area. We hope that this page will instill some thought for the future assemblies at Riverdale. 76 Activities TALE T SHOW - I98 . t !m,wW ki Z , , 11 First place in the Christmas talent show was award- ed to Beth Foster and Sue Griffin. They sang and danced to No More Tears . Second place was a three-way tie between Pam Wallace and Mike Wik- lund who sang You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma , John Reynolds who sang Heart of Gold and All that Matters , and Amy Riley and Randy Vance who sang Lost Love . Cindy De- Shane took third place with The Way We Were . Karla Crockett and Jana DeWitte sang back-up vocals for her. Activities 77 -ew M Q' e , . Mr. Dirks was taken ill this year and his medical bill ran into quite a high figure. To combat these high bills the district sponsored many fund raising events. Among these were a dance and a jog-a-thon, which together netted 53350. All who participated enjoyed themselves. and enjoyed giving sup- port and help to Mr. Dirks. All this help was to no avail, however, for Mr. Dirks later passed away. i Enix - Acliviii es 83 SPRING FEVER WEEK l f ,. 1 Q vii. an if.: f I wonder which team won? K I, L ti, t .
