Tennessee continued the Bet- ter Schools Program by intro- ducing the Career Ladder. New college requirements made an ACT score of 16 mandatory for all college- bound students. Darrell Waltrip won the Win- ston Cup Grand National Championship. Chevrolet announced the Sat- urn Plant is coming to Ten- nessee. Dr. Rhea Seddon was the first local astronaut to go into space. The V.A. changed its name to Alvin C. York. Rutherford County intro- duced the Main Street Pro- U.T. won the S.E.C. cham- pionship and defeated the Mi- ami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl. Tennesseans protested the nuclear waste site in Old Hickory. Rutherford County was intro- duced to liquor by the drink. The plane crash of Fort Campbell military personnel affected many Tennesseans. The decision over location of new high schools in the north- west section of the county led to much local controversy. Bart Gordon was elected re- presentative giving Mur- freesboro its first local con- gressman in many years. Basketball Homecoming Court The sixth annual Basketball Homecoming was as exciting as always. The game and dance were February 7, 1986, and the theme was The Best of Timesf, Privileges were sold for a free fourth period, late passes, chewing gum or wearing shorts, sunglasses, or hats. The enthusiasm dis- played at the pep rally was outstanding. That night, the Warrior and Warriorette teams played tough games against Sparta. The queen, king, and court were presented with their escorts at the pep rally and at the game. Queen Lisa Campbell was escorted by King Willie Verge, Senior atten- dants and escorts were Jennifer Wade, Andrea McKnight, Keith Sanford, and Clay Michaels. Junior attendants and escorts included Keshea Rounsaville, Amy I.aLance, lvie Burns, and John Dietrich. Sophomore attendants and es- corts were Traci Kauffman, Helen Donnelly, Jason Todd, and Jon Fisher, and freshman attendants and escorts in- cluded Ammie Westfall, Ashley Wynne, Lance Allen, and Sam Warner. The flower girl was Parri Sikes, and the crown bearer was Scott Collins. The music for the dance was provided by WGNS's deejay John McCreery.
