The V.A. changed its name to Alvin C. York. Rutherford County intro- duced the Main Street Pro- U.T. won the S.E.C. cham- pionship and defeated the Mi- ami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl. Tennesseans protested the nuclear waste site in Old Hickory. Rutherford County was intro- duced to liquor by the drink. The plane crash of Fort Campbell military personnel affected many Tennesseans. The decision over location of new high schools in the north- west section of the county led to much local controversy. Riverdale welcomed two ex- change students this year - Herminia Torres from Mexi- co City, Mexico, and Henrik Huelsmeier from Bremen, West Germany.
