174fAthletics Father Ryan In the first away game of the season, River- dale played Father Ryan in Vanderbilt Stadium. Father Ryan's defense was no match for the Warriors in the 28-O Riverdale win. Riverdalels defense gave the Warriors a 14-O first half lead over the Irish. Linebacker Rias Bennett trav- eled 64 yards with an interception for the first touchdown. Late in the second quarter Jackie Price scooped up a Father Ryan fumble and went 55 yards for the second score. The of- fense produced two more touchdowns during the second half. Senior tailback, Terrance James, ran a total of 146 yards during the second half of the game. He also scored two touchdowns of 2 and 19 yards, and Eddie Ki- gour added the four conversions for the night. Riverdalefs teamwork left the Irish empty-hand- ed, and the victory moved the Warriors' record to 2-1. Tony Bass sweeps wide to elude the defenders. Rias Bennett leads the Warrior defense, making a crucial tackle. Son, did you forget your White Sparta On the warpath once again, Riverdale pulled away from Sparta with a 21-16 win. The War- riors held a clear advantage during the first halfg quarterback Alfonzo Alexander passed for one touchdown and ran 17 yards for another. In the third period, fullback Rias Bennett scored and Eddie Kilgour converted, making the score 21- O, Riverdale. Sparta, however, came back with a 6 point score and a 2 point conversion. Despite an- other 8 point gain by Sparta late in the half, the Warriors held the lead, securing another victo- ry. The win brought Riverdale's season record to 3 and 1. Cleveland Riverdale, hosting Cleveland, was upset in the season opener with the score 15-14. The Warrior's loss was the result of costly penalties. Riverdale was penalized 14 times on the night, for a total of 110 yards. One penalty was as- sessed on Terrance James' 80-yard touchdown run, which was recalled because of the clip of a Cleveland defender at the 7-yard line. Two encouraging plays included Rias Bennett's drive for 115 yards and James' 79 yards on 14 carries. With these efforts the Warriors came close to the winning score, but nevertheless, suffered a heartbreaking first game loss. Everyone concentrates on the next big play. YJ' i 7 V V Q. W w'1 -'-u-.,.......,,-DI' BG... Phillip Herrin makes an awesome catch. Riverdale's first official win of the season was the defeat of Lebanon. The game started off on a sour note as the first long pass of the night was intercepted by a Blue Devil, leading to the first score of the game. Alfonzo Alexander put the Warriors on the scoreboard by connecting a 36-yard pass to Phillip Herrin. John Zavisa ran 12 yards for Riverdale's second touchdown. The half ended soon after Alexander complet- ed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darnell Spanng Spann scored again in the third quarter, making the score 28-7, a lead that Lebanon could not overcome. Rias Bennett played an outstanding game, including an interception which he re- turned for 35 yards for the final score, and Freddie Osborne made a key defensive play covering a Lebanon fumble which halted their final effort. Lincoln County The Warriors traveled to Fayetteville to take on the Falcons in the second away game of the season. Lincoln County defeated the Warriors 21-19 in the nondistrict contest. Riverdalels first three aerials were intercepted, but two were recovered by John Zavisa, following Lin- coln County's fumbles. Terrance James fired a 48-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Herrin. Full- back Rias Bennett moved the Warriors into Falcon territory at the 32-yard line with a 27- yard line burst. After five plays, Bennett drove for the score. Riverdale pushed 68 yards in six plays, topped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Alexander to James. However, Lincoln county chewed up the remaining time to pre- serve the win. Cookeville This year's suspense-filled game against the ie Warriors' linemen make some running room for Terrance James. Cookeville Cavaliers proved a victory for the Warriors' Homecoming game. The first half be- gan ominously with rain shading the field and three fumbles by Riverdale. The Cavaliers scored, but following close behind were the Warriors. Alfonzo Alexander completed a pass to Terrance James for a 58-yard scoring con- nection. The first half ended in a 7-7 tie. In the second half, Rias Bennett ran the ball 32 yards for a touchdown. The final touchdown was made when Alexander threw a 60-yard pass to Phillip Herrin. Bennett played a very successful game, connecting 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. As the game drew to a close, Riverdale pulled ahead, 21-19. The win over Cookeville made homecoming festivities complete, left Riverdale's district record 3-0, with the season ratio of 4-2.
